The House of Gaunt was once a powerful magical family and was considered part of the "Sacred Twenty Eight" due to their remaining pureblood status. Their wealth and pedigree was eventually squandered by greedy fingers and an insatiable appitete for luxury, which caused the noble House of Gaunt to slip through the cracks and lose its respect and reputation. The last few generations of Gaunts tried to make a living by selling their soul to the Serpents and fell victim to a darker path in life. Aella Gaunt was born for the purpose of expanding the Serpents and her brother, Ignatius was just as likely to be ensared by a Serpent female and join the ranks. Her childhood was relatively normal as Faustine and Augustus tried their best to keep Serpent matters away from their children until they were fifteen years old. Aella showed her magical abilities when she was eight years old, accidentally singing her father's leather jacket. Artemisia Kingsley captured her brother's eye in their later years at Hogwarts, which only seemed to strengthen Aella's relationship with the to-be serpent leader. Sadly, Aella was the first Gaunt to feel entirely out of her skin when she joined Serpents at fifteen - and the dangerous missions only sunk her deeper into trouble. Thankfully, Hale Vaughn always seemed to be there to catch her when she fell. Aella grew to love the annoying Vaughn boy.
On one particularly horrific day, Aella recieved news that Ignatius was murdered during a mission gone bad mere hours after Artemisia revealed to her that she was pregnant with her brother's baby. In order to salvage Artemisia's mental health and reduce stress on the baby, they ran away together to the Italian alpes where she could try to find peace. As the pregnancy progressed, Artemisia revealed that she wasn't ready to be a mother to a fatherless child and was considering putting the baby up for adoption in Italy. Aella couldn't bring herself to watch the last part of her brother go and offered to pretend the child was hers once it was born. That way Artemisia didn't have to carry the burden of never knowing her daughter. Artemisia agreed and when Isabella Gaunt was born with a shock of red hair akin to her own, Aella fell instantly in love.
They returned to London and the Serpents as soon as Artemisia was ready and had lost any signs of having just given birth. To Hale's shock, he was suddenly a father to a little redheaded girl. Aella told the Serpents that the reason for their disappearance was actually because Aella found out she was going to have a baby right after her brother died and was trying to do what was best for her child's health. The Serpents asked no questions and life continued on. Everything was picture perfect until Isabella was five. Aella became the target for a series of attacks and attempted assassinations but never once got caught. In a last act of desperation, her enemy sent a note declaring that if she didn't abandon the Serpents and leave London, her five year old child and Artemisia would be killed. Out of fear for their safety, Aella Gaunt oblidged and faked her death.
Aella moved to America where she chose to turn her life around and became an auror for the ministry under a different identity. Five years into her job, she finally revealed the truth behind her life to a superior who in return agreed to crack open the case. If solved, there was a chance she could resume her old identity and return home. After nearly four years, they recieved their first bit of intel that traced her unknown enemy back to London. After receiving the stamp of approval to transfer to the British ministry, Aella took the first flight to London with full intention to investigate the threats on her spare time. On the plane, she caught wind of the open head auror spot and with ten years under her belt, she felt she was apt to take on the challenge and was granted an interview. She was eventually granted to promotion of deputy auror instead. For Aella, this could open the door to finding who wanted to kill Isabella and Artemisia and essentially flipped her life upside down.
