Madam Camille Antoinette Substitute History of Magic Professor
-It's not what you look at that matters; it's what you see

History of Magic - My Office

It was a warm summery Sunday afternoon and Jack hadn't come downstairs yet. Camille knew it was better not to worry and that he'd probably be fine but she wasn't satisfied with this thought. So she trudged her way upstairs, and knocked on his door sharply. "Jack? It's half twelve, are you asleep"?

The knock startles him, and he looks up his bed, where he's sat cross-legged with his notebook on his lap, flicking wildly through the pages. "Yeah, I'm awake, mum," he calls out, loud enough for her to hear.

She sighs, relieved at the sound of his voice, for no real reason, she can't help but worry that something would happen to him in the night. "Can I come in?" She calls, pressing her ear against the door, waiting for a response.

"If you want," he responds, sounding nonchalant only so he doesn't worry her, and he prays she doesn't come in because if she does, she'll see the look of sheer confusion plastered across his face.

She takes a second to debate it, but then comes in anyway. "I was beginning to worry-" She stops when she sees the look on his face. "Is everything okay, Jack?"

"Yeah, I'm-" he begins, before turning a page and his brow furrows. "I'm, uh, I'm fine."

She smirks slightly, "Jack, if I could get a galleon for each time a kid said they're fine but really aren't, we'd be living in our own castle." She explains softly, sitting herself down opposite Jack, and placing a hand on his hair, brushing it back slightly. "What's going on?"

He lets out a sigh, deflating slightly, before gesturing towards the book in his lap. The pages are filled with black ink, taking the forms of conversations he's scribbled down and rough sketches of faces and notes from class. "I don't remember any of these," he says, voice clearly sounding defeated. "Normally I remember faces pretty well, but a girl came up to me the other day and said I'd met her before, and I had no idea who she was. I just had to grin and act like I knew her."

This worries her, but she tries not to show it, so Jack doesn't feel worried."Maybe it's a rough spot right now, little sir. How long have you been feeling it?"

Honestly? Months. But he doesn't want to say that, he doesn't want to worry her. She has enough on her plate planning lessons and getting ready for the new term. So, he just shrugs a little. "Pretty recently."

She nods, her head spinning with this, "Do you think we should talk to a healer about it?" She asks carefully, knowing it's a touchy subject. "Maybe they could have something that'd help?"

"I've been going to healers since I was nine," he says, exasperated; he hasn't forgotten a few of the visits to St Mungo's, which always ended with unsure glances between healers and sighs of defeat. "If they couldn't do anything then, they won't be able to do anything now."

She gets where he's coming from, but at the same time she won't just sit there and watch Jack deteriorate. "I just don't know what we should do..."

"Don't worry about it, Mum," he says, wrapping his arms round her because this is exactly what he wanted to avoid - her worrying. "I'll be fine."

She hugs him back, running one of her hands carefully against his hair. "You'll be okay. You're my little forget-me-not." She says warmly, "We'll get through this. Together."

He nods, looking back down at the book. He's met with a sketch of a blonde girl whose face he doesn't recognise whatsoever, yet judging by the different handwriting, she's written on the page, so they've definitely met before. "What happens if I forget you?" he whispers, unable to stop the worried words coming out. "Or Jill?"

The thought's crossed her mind, of course. But she never seriously thought it'd happen. "Ever since you got to the orphanage, there's been one person you've never forgotten. Ever." She starts, her words warm and matronly. "Jill means too much for you to forget her. Bonds like these are forged with a magic more powerful than anything we can comprehend." She explains. "Love."

Although he usually listens when she starts talking all philosophical, in this occasion, he rears back, brows furrowed at her words. "I'm not in love with Jill," he scoffs, in that way a thirteen year old boy does when his parents tries to talk to him about girls.

She allows herself a smirk. "You don't have to be in love romantically, Jack!" She says, leaning back, and falling back-first onto the bed, staring at the ceiling. "Love can be innocent. It takes you by surprise and you take it for granted." She says, almost wistfully. "But not all love is to do with fancying your friends." She adds with a giggle.

He smirks as her eyes glaze over and she enters the romance zone she always loves talking about. "You sound like Nicholas Sparks' long-lost sister," he chuckles, looking down at her (why he remembers that name, he doesn't know. Maybe because he's read more of those books than he cares to admit). "What the hell are you doing teaching at Hogwarts?"

She laughs, "What are you doing, reading Nicholas Sparks at thirteen?" She asks with a mock-accusatory laugh. "And you never know. Nicholas Sparks could be my pen-name." She says matter-of-factly.

He shrugs innocently in response to her first question. "Someone had loads of them at the orphanage, so they were all I had. I only really remember The Notebook, and that's probably because of this," he gestures towards the book in his lap. "And that doesn't sound that surprising, honestly."

She chuckles. "Hey. What do you say we watch the notebook tonight? Or - better yet, let's watch Titanic again." She suggests, wanting to take his mind off things.

The sound of that brightens him up, and he nods. "Titanic sounds good. Maybe they'll both fit on the door this time," he chuckles.

"Jack you know good and well they could not have fit on the same piece of wood." She says, knowing he must be joking. "We have had this conversation too many times." She says with a coy smile

"We have?" he frowns, not remembering any of those alleged conversations.
