The country of Ireland barely had time to unite themselves under one flag when in 1169 the Normans invaded. King Ruaidhrí fought back for almost 30 years, but by the time the year 1198 rolled around, the one Gaelic King Ireland would ever know passed away. There was one dirty secret that the King has though - he had wizard brother. This Brian ua Conchobair was the magical king, and he was likewise conquered by the muggle King. (The fact the Irish had a magical royal before the English is still a pint of extreme national pride). What the muggle didn't know is the Brian had a son, Tairrdelbach, who inherited Brian's gifts.
The magical people of Ireland obviously had no power any more, but they kept track of Tairrdelbach's descendants. They changed his last name to make his family less conspicuous, and the house of ó Maoilriain was born.
They family was kept alive for almost 800 years, when in 1922 the muggle version of Ireland gained it's freedom. However, the magical people of Ireland did not. However, King James knew that if he did not make any concessions, he would be in deep trouble. That's when the Irish came forward with the man they believed to the rightful king of Ireland, Ríoghnán ó Maoilriain (the first). King James made a concession, giving Ríoghnán his daughter, Iola to marry. With the marriage came a promotion to Archduke - higher rank than any other royal, minus the King himself. He would be allowed to act almost independently, but he would still technically be under English rule. The Irish agreed - very begrudgingly. If they truly wanted to fight for their freedom, it likely would have ended with a lot of death, and they'd likely lose. It just wasn't worth the risk, and thus the Archduchy of Ireland was born.
The ó Maoilriains did not marry any more British people into their family tree from that point forward. The Irish Nobles all married other proud Irish families, being very careful to avoid the effects of inbreeding that plagued previous monarchies. This was because that initial begrudging acceptance of remaining under British rule only grew stronger as the years went by. The family grew to develop a strong distaste for their British counterparts, the Windsors. Most of them secretly support the idea of Irish independence... some not so secretly. The other European countries looked on with indifference, at least for the most part. They did have one ally - the French.
The French and the English haven't gotten along for a very long time, and so of course, the mantra of 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' came to fruition. The ó Maoilriains and Valois formed a close relationship, in some regards the Irish are closer to their French allies than their own sovereign counterpart, the Windsors. That close relationship holds true to this day, as Ríoghnán II and Marinette are fairly close friends.
Considering that Ríoghnán II has now been mentioned, it's probably time to delve into more of the modern family's history. Archduke Fionnlagh inherited the title at a very young age - 18 to be exact. He was an only child because shortly after his birth, his father, Seán, fell ill with cancer. He fought it off several times during Fio's upbringing, but every time it came back. Eventually, Seán couldn't fight it anymore and passed away, passing along the title of Archduke to his only son. His other family members eventually passed away, most of them childless, until Fio wound up inheriting all of the major titles that the Archduchy of Ireland had.
Luckily for the people of Ireland, Fio was an extremely healthy young man, but as you can imagine there was enormous pressure for him to get married. Eventually, the people got their wish, when Fio started to fall for the daughter of a wealthy Irish family, Bébinn Ó Flannagáin. However, despite the pressure for Fio to get married and continue the family line, he courted the young lady slowly and well away from the public eye. Fio was always a very private man, and preferred to keep his personal life away from the eyes of the media. Eventually, though the Irish got their wish, and Fio and Bébinn announced their engagement. Unlike their courtship, which took years, their engagement was short lived. The couple was wed within the year, and babies followed shortly.
Their first son was named Ríoghnán, after the first Archduke. The Irish held their first Archduke in high esteem, and thus from birth, Rio was under enormous pressure among louder and louder cries for Irish Independence. The Irish have never liked being under British rule very much, and it seemed that the Irish people wanted their Archduke to become an independent king, and for their ministry to break way from the British, like the muggles had done almost 100 years ago. These cries for independence have reached an almost unbearable level these days.
Fio and Bébinn had a second child as well, a girl named Mairéad. As Fio was an only child, he had all the ducal titles plus the Archducal title, so Mai was due to inherit the title of Duchess of Leinster. Rio obviously was the heir to the heir to Archduchy. His first magical sign came when he was six years old, he lit the robes of some posh British diplomat on fire. He had been visiting court and subtly insulting his father and saying some garbage about how Ireland belonged to UK and he should be more cordial to his superiors. The diplomat of course tried to find who lit his robes ablaze but no one had their wands drawn so he couldn't accuse anyone of anything as there was no tangible proof. Fio and Bébinn of course were rather pleased with their son but couldn't actually encourage that kind of thing so they just let it lie.
Rio attended Hogwarts just like every other magical Irish student, but when he was younger he wasn't nearly as good about keeping his mouth shut about how he wanted to separate Ireland from England when he was younger. He definitely caused more than a few fights with the British royals at school, the monarchy of course wrote to the Archduke, but his replies were always pretty simple. "Maybe if you didn't subjugate my people under your foreign power, than maybe my my son wouldn't have such a strong distaste for your offspring." The Irish have never really tried to hide their hatred for the fact they're under British rule. Eventually Rio got better at expressing that feeling in a more diplomatic fashion, but the message was clear. The Irish might not openly start a revolution but they certainly would never happily answer to the British.
Rio worked his ass off at Hogwarts despite the fact he probably didn't need to - admittedly it was largely driven by the fact he didn't want to have any British royal be better than him at anything. Rio is a very proud young man - but his desire to be better than the British wasn't really driven by personal desire. Rio was proud of Ireland and felt he was representing his people while at school, and he wouldn't let a Brit be better than him.
Rio met his wife, __________ at her debutante ball. She was the daughter of one the lesser Irish counts. Rio talked to her briefly, like he had been expected to, but they quickly discovered they had a lot in common, and they wanted to get to know one another better. Rio asked her on a date that very night, and they started dating shortly thereafter. Rio had dated a number of girls before her, but he never felt the way he felt about _______. Their relationship quickly grew serious, and as they were in seventh year, they moved in together at the Archducal Palace after they graduated Hogwarts. Rio proposed to her on their second anniversary, and they were wed that summer, only a year after graduating Hogwarts.
Their first child, Saorise was born about a year later when the couple was 20. The young couple then seemed to pop out babies at an incredible rate that no one could quite believe, as they had another child a year later, this time a boy named ________. That was followed by twin girls a year after that, named Caitrín and Aoibh.
Fio grew ill when Rio was about 27, and he fought it off for long as he could. But he didn't last very long based off how quickly the illness spread throughout his body and died less than a year after contracting the sickness. Thus Rio was crowned as the Archduke Ríoghnán II, a position he has now held for ten years. He continues to advocate for Irish independence, though a lot more diplomatically than he had when he was younger. He's done everything he can to pass on that idea onto his kids, though with all the pressure to separate from England, that wasn't that hard. With Archduke Ríoghnán at the helm of Ireland, it won't be long before tensions boil over and something goes major goes wrong between the two countries.
