Atena really cares about how she presents herself. She isn't necessarily shallow, but she does place a lot of weight on how she looks. For one, her hair is easily her biggest source of confidence, so she spends a lot more time on trying out new hairdos than she does on, say, picking her outfit out. She values simplicity in the way she dresses, so it isn't out of the norm for her to wear sundresses and skirts. She usually dresses in lighter shades, as they compliment her tanner skin the best, but still enjoys her flowery prints.

“Promise me we’ll never lose each other.” “I - I can’t.” “Promise me!” “...okay, I promise.”
You know that gut-wrenching feeling you get when you’re so close to getting something you want and someone rips it away from you? That’s how Yousef felt when he was a young boy. Weeks shy of his sixteenth birthday and irrevocably in love with childhood friend Sadiqe. There was so much he wanted to do, things he wanted to say, but it was all lost with the wind. His family found an opportunity to flee Iran and move to the United Kingdom, which, in spite of its political climate, welcomed them as immigrants and later naturalized citizens. He thought he’d lost his one opportunity for happiness, and for the first few years, he wasn’t really the same person. While he was ambitious and seized every opportunity his parents had sacrificed everything for, he lacked the spark he felt, the interest and passion, that came with Sadiqe’s presence in his life.
Unbeknownst to Yousef, Sadiqe had ended up moving to the United Kingdom as well shortly about two years later. There was a long-standing agreement between her father and an associate of his for their children to marry that would have entered into effect once she was eighteen. She was technically still seventeen when she arrived, so to stop her parents' fraud, she tried begging the police for help. Her family got by unscathed after an unsavory interrogation that resulted in no tangible proof of any crimes being committed. She played her only card and wound up essentially losing it all. Sadiqe had always been respectful of her superiors, but being married off wasn’t really something she wanted or could justify. She also knew that once she was in her parents’ custody again, she was in for it, so with a broken heart, she left child service custody and made a break for it.
With the little money she had nicked from her father's wallet, she found herself on a train halfway across the country. It was all she could afford, but it was good enough. Disembarking the bus, she ran into someone she thought she’d never see: Yousef. Honestly, at this point, you’ve gotta be thinking - what kind of cliché is this? It’s gotta be fake, right? Well, no, it was very much so real. He couldn’t really believe it at first and neither could she, which led to a fight in the middle of the station. It was the usual questions: who are you, why do you have my best friend’s face, can you stop, etc. It took a turn for the better when she got to explaining, but he was still a little skeptical. It wasn’t until a missing person notice was played on a TV in the station that it really clicked for him that she was real, the reunion was happening and she was in trouble.
They hit rock bottom for a little bit. Sadiqe had to go on the run until she was eighteen and could come clean about everything. She’d be legally independent… except she wasn’t really a citizen, so she was at risk of being sent back if she didn’t approach things from the right angle. She was also putting Yousef and his family at risk. Citizens or not, it wouldn’t help them if their legal records were marred because of one girl’s insolence. Yousef insisted it was alright, but she felt constantly judged by the people she was leaving with. It hurt, but she had to say goodbye to Yousef until she could get back on her feet. He didn’t really understand at first, and even insisted he go with her, but in the end, she got him to let go. They didn’t see each other again until six years later. When they met again, Sadiqe was in a much better place. Her family had been sent back home. Seeing her, healthy and considerably happier, he knew it had been for the best, but now that they’d found their way back to each other, he didn’t plan to let her go. She didn’t mind.
Three years later, they were a married couple, and a year after, they welcomed their firstborn Behrad. Atena followed three years later, and Soheila, Farid and Amir followed her. The family was big, but they were happy, and frankly, that’s what mattered most. Everything else - the having to work several jobs each, the struggles, the fights - was irrelevant when you considered their rough past as a couple. Nonetheless, they persevered, doing the best they could for their five children.
Growing up, Atena had it a lot easier than her parents did. She grew up with a family that cared for her and siblings that, although they got on her nerves very frequently, proved to be excellent company and even better scapegoats. She was an easy baby and even easier toddler, though her later childhood saw her turn into a living nightmare. Could you really blame her? Racism is still alive and well in the United Kingdom, and not even her cuteness was enough to mute everyone who teased her and belittled her for her heritage. It’s alright, though, she always got her revenge. Framing kids for stealing her stuff, blaming them for breaking stuff she broke around the school, splashing her water over their pants or skirts and getting them labelled as wetters - no matter what she had to do, she always made sure they regretted messing with her.
In part, this defensive attitude is why her magic manifested the first time, when she was about ten years old. It had been a rough day and her classmates’ ignorance had been getting on her nerves all day. What really sent her over the edge, though, was Behrad thinking it’d be a good idea to pour syrup all over her pillow and bed. Imagine her anger and shock when she throws herself onto her bed, just to realize she’s all sticky from pancake syrup. She lost all her marbles and wound up screaming at him as she marched her way up to his bedroom. Her magic caused his door to blow off its hinges and all the syrup that was glued to her back and hair to make its merry way to Behrad. It wrapped around his mouth and went inside his shirt, getting all of his skin. It was hilarious, and it broke her out of her angry tirade. Not only did she get payback, but she was a witch like her brother. Confirmation of her being a witch came in the form of a Hogwarts acceptance letter when she turned 11.
At Hogwarts, it was a lot easier for Atena to feel at home. She was sorted into Gryffindor, where she thrived for seven years, four of which were as prefect due to a lack of applicants. She excelled academically and created a reputation for herself - especially after becoming an animagus at age 14. Everyone thought she was destined for the Ministry given her interest in it, but she shocked everyone by deciding to pursue a muggle degree. She took a gap year to figure out where she wanted to go and how she wanted to pursue her degree, as well as gain some muggle experience. She didn’t really want to stand out. In the end, she decided to study in the University of California, Los Angeles, to pursue a degree in teaching, but wound up transferring to NYU for Digital Art and Design. It was a huge 180, but teaching was what her parents expected from her. It was what they wanted her to do, for some stability, but it just didn’t really stand out to her as what she wanted to do. She preferred the arts, everything that was free and wonderful and whimsical and unpredictable. To appease her parents with a backup plan in case she couldn’t pull through with digital art, she did pursue a double major in International Relations. Worst come to happen, she’d just work in the government. It’s what everyone had originally expected, and she didn’t mind it as much as teaching, so… why not give it a go?
Well, it took a few years, but she ended up graduating with honors for both degrees. She had a promising career ahead of her in digital art, though, and she was looking at US-based companies to become a graphic designer, but before she could start on that, news broke that her mother was now sick. She was expected to return to the UK and help her family, which really, even though it was a bummer, she didn’t mind. She ended up having to get a job in the one industry she didn’t want a job. Teaching. It was at the recommendation of one of her old professors that she got hired, but now she needed to figure out how the hell she was going to move forward.
The things you do for family, right?

Atena is a sweetheart. Really, she is! She wants the best for everyone and tries her best to be the it-girl for everyone. It does lead to her spreading herself pretty thin, just from the amount of things she wants to do, but bless her heart. She's doing the best she can, and honestly, if you don't think that's good enough, then that's your problem more than it is hers.
