She would shrug. "She just wants to keep me out of the back yard. She went back there with me maybe a month ago, and was really nervous the whole time. ...I keep jumping into the line thing to see if I can weaken it...but no luck yet."
She would nod. "...but she was a really good actress." She would set the painting down just inside the door in the living room, then come back out and sit on the step looking at Charity.

She looked at Melinda curiously. "What do you mean by that?"
She would think hard for a couple moments trying to find what she meant. "I think she was pretending to be scary. I don't think she really would have hurt us."

"I don't think she would've hurt us, either," she said. "Not physically, at least."
She would frown, looking at Charity questioningly. "Maybe...but if nobody will be her friend, then how's she ever supposed to learn how to be a friend?"

"It's not for those reasons, sweetie," she said. "Sometimes people make very bad choices with what to do in life. And when people make bad choices, there are consequences."
She would nod. "I do...but even if she doesn't want help, how can she ever have the chance to say sorry or make up for her bad choices if nobody will offer help? Maybe she just needs someone like I know I always have you."

"From what Ash has told me, Melinda... she doesn't want help. She wants to be free of her family, sort of like Faith. But she's making all the wrong choices about how to go about it."
He would smile at her. "Happy Birthday! I talked to Mary to make sure you had the day off...and I thought I would come by and see what your plans were for the day."

She grinned. "I know Melinda wanted to hang out for a little while at least," she said. She decided not to mention that her parents likely wouldn't be home for dinner... "So I'm basically free all day."
