The Black Lake is a large body of water located to the south of the castle. It is about half a mile in diameter and the Hogwarts plumbing network drains into it. Every school year at Hogwarts, first years sail across the lake to the castle in boats as per Hogwarts tradition. When they got to the school, they are then Sorted into their houses. The lake is very often cold, but there are no rules against swimming in it. Students often dangle their legs over the water during hot weather.
It is home to a Giant Squid, grindylows, and a colony of Merpeople. The lake was also used as the site of the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament. The Slytherin Common Room is beneath the lake, accessed through an entrance in the school dungeons. The Chamber of Secrets is also thought to be beneath the lake. Students can enjoy watching the Giant Squid, but if you want to touch it, be very careful, its skin is very delicate and fragile.

Ferlen would see the group by the lake, and come over. "Hi guys, I'm Ferlen...I'm a second year in Hufflepuff." He would pull his shoes and socks off with a smile, and roll up his pant legs. then he would dip his feet in the lake, and sigh happily.

Rosabella sat down on a rock and started drawing a blueprint of a prank she was planning on a piece of parchment, silently listening to the conversation between Klaire and Ashley
Rosabella stared at Ashley in awe. I didn't think she would acctully hit him! She saw that Gruffs nose started to bleed a little, so Rosabella took a cloth hankerchief to give to him, and stopped. She didn't want to go against a fellow Slytherin, but she didn't want to just do nothing... *Hands Gruff the cloth* "Ashley, we might get points taken away if someone tells a teacher!"
Rosabella watched as Ashley walks away. Do all Slytherins act like that? She remembered she was a Slytherin as well. Am I going to haveto act like that as well?She looked at Gruffard. "Are you ok? Do you need to go to the Hospital wing?"
