Just like in the muggle world, the magical world was susceptible to gang wars and an underground system of smuggling. Every country had a bid in who had the most notorious of this nature but America was among those who had the most claim to the title. It's west coast was especially bad and Caleb Kiu was caught up in the worst of it.
He belonged to the Kiu family, a legacy feared in Hong Kong for it's brutality and power and more specifically a branch that had expanded into America two generations ago. The lack of immediate connection, however, didn't stop them from being just as brutal and a reputation gathered around them. Caleb himself was born to Eaton Kiu, one of the highest members of the family and it was dictated that one day he too would follow in his father's footsteps.
He never saw his dad and was constantly in danger; his mother and sisters constantly relocating from San Francisco and Los Angeles to escape the clutches of the rivalling gangs. It was a hard life, one he was desperate to escape from. and only as he got older did he realise the full extent of the horrors.
It wasn't often his father stayed with them and, as luck would have it, on one of the few times he did was when Caleb saw what his family had been seeing for generations. Being only eight at the time it's needless to say that the experience was terrifying. A rival gang had stormed their house, leaving no part of it unscathed until they found his father. What followed is something Caleb has tried to remove from his memory ever since but let's just say he lost his father that night.
When moving to their new location that had been scouted for them, NYC, he had his first magical experience. His mother had opted to take a car, native to her muggle-ness, which Caleb burst the tyres from. It was bittersweet because although he found out he had magic which was a thing he feared of not getting, he had made their trip harder.
He blocks the rest of his life out, remembers going to Ilvermorny and being sorted into Wampus only. A big part of his life was Quidditch and he had become captain in his final year before going on and training for the national team after being recommended. He loves his life and can't imagine doing anything else.
