Coventgarden

Good luck to any shopaholics who come across Covent Garden on a sunny day. Found on the fringes of London's famous West End, the area contains a bustling collection of markets, independent shops, cafés and a central square usually populated with street performers and artists. It's incredibly easy to get lost on a busy day, but maybe that's not such a bad thing - enjoy the homemade craft stores, pick up an artisan coffee and sit out in the plaza to enjoy the sun.

With the start of term being imminent, Lauren had been given a week-long break by her mothers to get all her things in order and still have some time to relax before she began hew NEWT education. Truth be told, she's incredibly nervous about having to go back. She doesn't know what to expect from her professors, and to make matters worse, she won't have Aoibh in all her classes, so getting around and socializing has become about three times as difficult. She's so worried that that, even though she should be enjoying her day out with her family, she's glued to a corner of the plaza, trying to network and interact with other students over Witchagram, mostly to no real success.

{{{Astoria skimmed her hand along a fine looking book, her thoughts buzzing loudly in her head. Hogwarts wasn't far away and she still had to get her things for school, yet here she was, being counterproductive as always. She sighed, picking up the booking and flipping through the pages, though she barely took in what was in it, something about wild plants she thought, though she wasn't sure as her mind wandered.}}}

Although it can easily argued that his home has never particularly been a sanctuary of comfort and normal family values, things feel so much stranger now. You would think that the removal of two- whatever Sarai and Jai are, he's still not quite sure, and a father who made the walls shake with his shouting would improve the atmosphere, but Elijah's never hated being at home as much as he does now. The nightly arguments and general misery might have ceased but now the place feels so empty; his mother barely talks, his schoolfriends are all away on summer trips and he doubts Sarai would want to see him, if he even knew where she was. Hence why he's here, weaving through the marketplace with his earphones blaring and his hands in his pockets. Call it retail therapy. It's such a huge place that he can easily spend all day here, and that's exactly what he intends to do. He grabs a takeaway coffee from one of the little pop-up vans and finds a old antique store, hovering over towards the aisles of dusty vinyl and yellowed books.

After spending so much time on the road, it was comforting settling down in London again even if it was under worse circumstances than before. Her mother still refused to have her at home when they finally arrived in Whitby after what was a thrilling (yet eventually terrifying) trip with Mia. When they arrived to Mia's place again, she had swiftly arranged to go room with her grandparents near the coast, so she wouldn't burden the Hopkins family and so she wouldn't be killed quite frankly. Today is her last afternoon here, so she decided to come down to the shops to practice one of her worse habits. Not only does she get a thrill out of peaking between aisles at stores, but she has a knack for collecting old things as a part of her aesthetic. Stumbling upon an antique shop, her eyes widened and heart melted a bit, briefly alleviating whatever terror she seemed to be haunted with in the previous days. Entering the shop, she soon busies herself with a stash of old photographs, flipping through them and admiring the fashion of the times.

He's more preoccupied with the vinyl shelves than anything, leafing through the aged covers and practically feeling the dust coming off on his fingers; now the house is far more quiet than it ever used to be, an uncomfortable quiet that Elijah used to pray for but now thinks he will likely never get used to, he's going to blast music as loud as he can to fill it up. His mother won't care. She barely cares about herself nowadays. The vinyl are all predictable - Chopin, Haydn, a withering Beethoven record that almost comes apart in his hands - and he places it aside as he turns the corner, earphones drowning out the hum of other people in the shop which is probably why he barely registers the blonde girl by the photographs until he, quite literally, walks into her. Thank fuck his coffee has a lid on it. A string of Hebrew curses escape under his breath as he steps backwards, careful not to either spill his drink or shout obscenities (he doesn't exactly feel mellow at the best of times, never mind now) but then- oh. "Divya. What are the chances?" The Dracula girl with the fake-witch mother - and Mia's friend. What are the chances, indeed.

Divya contemplates using the photographs for various uses, but can't quite get past the hurdle of cutting them apart. Almost as if the thought was physically knocked from her brain, she forgets all about it the moment someone slams into her side. She stumbles a bit before grabbing onto the shelf she's in front of in order to stabilize herself. "Excuse y-" she starts although rather politely despite the hushed yet aggressive Hebrew she manages to overhear. When she whips around to face the perpetrator, her face softens and she immediately laughs, setting the photographs down where they were before and crossing her arms. "Elijah. It's a pleasure seeing you again." Oh, how she would have never thought that to be... Maybe they can afford two meetings and then become mysterious acquaintances to one another. "How has your summer been?" She smiles gently.

It's most certainly a loaded question, considering he could probably talk for the next hour about how his summer has been, but a) he doesn't particularly want to, and b) Divya doesn't need to hear it. He's already told one stranger his life story and he's already beginning to regret that, so from now on he can at least act like his life is in check. "Uneventful," he says with a light shrug, still smiling in amusement at the likelihood of them encountering one another again; despite their exchanging numbers that day in the park, Elijah hadn't considered texting her yet, and he doubts Mia is even aware of their knowing each other. This will be a fun surprise to spring on her. "What brings you back down to London so early? I thought you said you weren't returning for a few months."

She glances down at his chest for a moment, "Isn't that disappointing. I suppose nothing has come of your little secret?" Her eyes flicker back towards his, smile broadening slightly as she reaches to tuck her blonde hair behind her ears. Her expression is a bit smug and teasing for a moment, but it doesn't last long as the conversation switches. Divya isn't interested in knowing. Usually she can be a gossip, wanting to know everyone's drama except she prefers a bit of mystery in these circumstances. Besides, she could be wrong- but doesn't everyone have a secret? "My mother wasn't in a situation to have me once we arrived in Whitby- or so I assume." She wouldn't answer her texts until they arrived in town, then she chased them out of the driveway trying to hex them. Elijah doesn't need to know how difficult her mother truly is though. "We returned. Obviously," she adds with a light laugh. "I leave for Brighton soon, however- to stay with my grandparents until late August comes."

He's a little taken aback at the secret being mentioned, even if it is purely in jest, and manages to conceal the grimace that immediately springs to his lips by turning it into a grin just in time. More has come of his secret than he'd ever care to think about right now. "Late August?" he echoes, folding his arms across his chest in mild curiosity; from what Elijah remembers of their last conversation, she attends a boarding school or something up North, hence the accent and his total cluelessness regarding the geography of the area. London boy, through and through. "What about school?" The point about her mother being unable to accept her back in also hits a tad close to home, so he neglects to follow up on it; besides, unless its at one o'clock in the morning with total strangers, he doesn't tend to go prying into personal matters too much.

"School starts in September. I spend the last part of the summer holiday in Brighton with my grandparents," she tells him. It's a lie considering her grandparents don't particularly love having her around. Divya believes it's because she's too similar to her mother for their taste, which concerns her and leaves her stewing most of the time she's there as she waits for them to say such a comment. It always happens. Usually on the second night. Still she feels a troubled feeling in her torso as she lies, suddenly self conscious as she considers what happened with Mia just before. And they're friends, aren't they? "Their house is full of silly antiques such as these. It's absolutely delightful- as if it's a little shop of its own. I do promise I go there for them though. I know they want the company." Her grandparents are on the older side, so they don't have very many friends left. So even though they don't seem to take to her very well, they would prefer to have someone else around to score their arguments and to clean up after them.

Of course, school starts in September, duh. It isn't often he chooses to board at school rather than go home over the summer holidays but it has happened more than once - it is far quieter in those dorms than it ever was in the house, hence he found himself almost putting roots down in the library and watching time turn into one long blur. He couldn't hack it, of course - there were frequent visits back to the house, under the guise of collecting books or spare clothing but actually with the intention of checking on his younger siblings. The bruises always seemed the darkest when he wasn't there. "Ah, I see," Elijah nods, turning back to face the shelf of bric-a-brac behind them, covered in quaint little ornaments and a complimentary layer of dust; his own home is somewhat similar, thanks to the family money. They can afford old records and first-edition classics and collectibles, and living in a city with so many museums makes weekends easy to fill. Maybe staying in London has its perks after all. "You sound a little like you're protesting too much, but if their house looks like this, I can understand. I'd happily live in a museum or somewhere like this." It's a teasing remark, the corner of his mouth turned upwards at the remark about promising to go there for her grandparents' company; a concept he could never relate to. The further away from his family, the better. Especially now.

When he turns, she smiles and admires his side profile for only a mere second before following his lead. Her hands reach for a vintage plush doll complete with raggedy braided hair and a tattered dress. She's gentle and slow in her approach, turning it over to try to find the date on it before she falls towards something else. "What do you mean- protesting too much?" Divya laughs in her bewilderment, pushing hair behind her ear as she glances back at him. "I love my grandparents. Well, they are a bit tricky at times being tories and all, but they are of another generation." As someone immersed more in the wizarding world, she cannot fathom having peers who are so blatantly conservative. Given that conservative issues there include being biased against vampires and that seems ridiculous to a Muggle-born, doesn't it? The fact of the matter is that she doesn't consider for one minute that anyone would possibly believe such things. Not in the forties. "Anyway, you would happily live in a museum, would you? Do you think there are museum...operators who live there? Sort of similar to small shop owners." It's a stupid question and is more so playing out a fantasy. She, too, would love to live in a place like this. Her mother's home is quite eclectic, but it's with ugly things that tend to just be there for their auras (although Divya would argue the auras are quite dim should they have any at all). She would want a gorgeous sort of eclectic home full of things that make sense to her and have purpose- are rooted in some sort of reality while meanwhile suspending her out of it and taking her to some faraway point in time. She squanders that thought, crushing her emotional little heart in the process. No need to get so excited and scare him even if it's in her head because she won't be able to manage her silence for much longer like that. "I would love this too- though. You have stellar taste."

He watches as she examines the doll, smiling a little to hide the internal embarrassment at the realisation that oh yeah, not everyone is physically repulsed at the thought of spending time with their family when it isn’t absolutely necessary - only the people he hangs around with share that experience, which probably explains a lot about his friendships. The array of antiques and bric-a-brac before them really is an absolute gold mine, once you sift through the dust and the broken ornaments. His eyes fall on a chunky glass ashtray with petals frozen inside, which he can imagine Mia would appreciate; and then a jewellery set, still wrapped in silk in its box, which makes him think of the earring that Arden gave him. That’s at home, at the moment. There’s no way he’s walking around with that on his person - whatever spell is embedded in it, regardless of how ‘lucky’ or protective it might be, has the potential to wreak havoc with what dwindling control he has left. “I think the only people who stay overnight in museums are the security guards,” Elijah comments, inspecting a candle holder. “Though I suppose if you operated your own little private one, it’d be possible. It would have to be extremely niche, for it to be so small.” It has always secretly been his dream - to work in a museum, to specialise in something so well that he can handle genuine pieces of history. Maybe it’s achievable, if banking doesn’t work out. “What would yours specialise in, if you were to own one?”

"I think a small, private museum would be rather cute though. I believe small towns have them, which isn't terribly niche." Admittedly, her mind starts to cut in and out of the conversation as she inspects different knick knacks around the shop, moving along and hoping he follows her. Div doesn't pay much mind to it. Should he stand there or go another route, it wouldn't be the first time she kept talking to someone who wasn't there. It isn't that she's self-absorbed. Her Hogwarts friends just love ditching her. "I don't know what mine would be about. It depends on how niche. I could- oh, I could have one about the Moon. It would be full of art inspired by the Moon and have articles about the effects it has on the Earth and its phases. I could have a photoshoot spot where people appear to be on the Moon and perhaps spend a couple thousand on some faux Moon rock." Her voice gets a bit lighter and she claps her hands together, turning back to him with a bright smile. She pictures it perfectly in her head, but isn't sure it comes across properly. "I could have a statue of Selene. It would be beautiful, but admittedly a bit tacky if it's all one thing. What would yours be?"

He does follow her as she moves through the shop, somewhat subconsciously as his attention shifts between Divya and the antiques - an old gramophone calls to him from one of the nearby shelves, and he's admiring it when she pipes up about her moon museum. He doesn't really understand the significance of the moon, of all things - it's involved in that fake magic her mum's involved with, right? Maybe that explains her excitement - but she's clearly passionate about it, and that's what makes him smile. "I feel like you could pull that off pretty well. The magic crowds would adore that place." Real wizards, he's pretty sure, wouldn't be as keen - though it's not like he can say much, considering how few of them he knows. Sarai would probably enjoy herself there. "I'm not sure, to be honest. Stratford-upon-Avon has its own little Shakespeare museum, and Kew Gardens exists for the botanists. Hamburg has Composers' Quarter - which I've never visited, unfortunately. I'll have to think on it." It does occur to him, in that moment, just how many magical aspects exist that he would happily create a museum of: the plants he's only seen in Sarai's stolen textbook, the music he's briefly heard during brief trips to Diagon. From what he's experienced of wizarding London, there exists very little celebration of its history. Maybe it's a good thing; after all, he knows absolutely nothing about what's happened in the past of the wizarding world. They're still humans, right? At least- well, he thinks they are. He feels pretty human himself. And fuck knows what wars must be like when magic gets involved.
