Located inside a famous clocktower in the heart of Croydon, this library is the perfect spot for any bookworm wishing to find a new world to discover. There's plenty to do in its four floors, from grabbing a spot of lunch in the café to exploring the newspaper archives for articles dating back decades. Although primarily a Muggle location, it's not uncommon to find the odd wizard here wandering amongst the bookshelves, especially those interested in learning about how Muggle life works.

The tranquility that comes with taking up one of the few unoccupied nooks in a library like this one is unrivalled. Normally, Ophelia doesn't like reading play scripts, but she's two pages into Holly Down in Heaven and she has to admit, the main plot of the play is really intriguing. Ophelia has a cup of Iced Passion Tango from a nearby Starbucks, and is happily sipping away while she fiddles with the edge of the page. The flight from Washington early that morning was draining - more than portkeys tend to be for her, which says a lot - so she's happy to be left to her own devices for the evening.

The library really is his happy place. Even with all the mess and anxiety from the past few days, the nausea he gets every time one his co-workers text him and his heart leaps into his mouth, dotheyknowdotheyknowdotheykn- he can at least attempt to tune it all out and immerse himself in the endless collections of books lining the shelves. It isn't particularly busy today, which makes sense seeing as London is finally seeing decent temperatures and a blue sky, so the majority of the armchairs and window seats are unoccupied. And while eighteenth-century literature isn't his particular favourite, Roxana has been screaming at him from the end shelf, so that's what he's here to do: read that book, grab a coffee and try to pretend like his friend didn't just find out his biggest secret the other day. Whatever. He's good at compartmentalising. You have to be, growing up with a family like his.

Ophelia has no reason to pay any attention to Elijah. She wouldn't have noticed him, really, if she didn't have the habit of looking up every few minutes from what ever she might be holding in that moment. She should have no problems in a space as quiet as this library, but after spending the better part of the last year in noisy areas with a rude and problematic student body, she has it in her head she'll miss out on someone talking to her. So here she is. And when she does zero in on Elijah, it's hard for her to look anywhere else. It isn't because he's attractive or anything — not that he isn't, because he is, at least conventionally — but rather because no guy she has ever met has willingly come to a library, let alone picked out anything that isn't a sports magazine. It's a curious sight, and Ophelia keeps glancing at him from time to time, wondering in part if this could be for a school assignment. Brits are weird like that, right? With wonky months for the start and end of terms?

Elijah knows when someone is staring at him. Call it a survival tactic. Plus his paranoia senses are dialled up to eleven at the minute, half-expecting one of his colleagues to appear and drag him into an alley or something the minute he lets his guard down; he likes to tell himself that he has common sense, and that Mia wouldn't be stupid enough to grass him up like that, but it's still a big deal. So when he notices the girl with the bright-coloured drink repeatedly throwing him glances, his blood turns to ice for a quick second. Sure, she looks harmless, but that doesn't mean anything. "Is there something on my face?" he asks, quirking an unimpressed eyebrow to drill his point home. It's times like these he wishes he knew a defensive spell or three. Even without a wand or any real training, they would buy him a couple of minutes.

See? She has a valid reason to look at people. Then again, this could be pinned exclusively on her; he's only reacting to her nosiness, after all. Ophelia's lips part a little, eyebrows shooting to her hairline as she starts shaking her head, mouthing a firm no. She still isn't good at BSL, but considering the alternatives, she's willing to try. "The book!" she expresses, immediately afterwards gesturing at the piece of literature he's holding to make sure he understands somehow. Her gestures are perhap a little frantic, not wanting to leave a sour opinion of herself on this guy's mind. "Just looking at the book." God, why's she even trying? He probably doesn't know what the hell she's doing. Good going, Jareau, she thinks.

Her panic at being caught would have alarmed him in literally any other situation, particularly the half-arsed attempt to redirect the attention to the book in his hands, but then she speaks and the pieces click together in his mind rather quickly. Fucking hell, Elijah, get a grip. They aren't going to target him in a library of all places, where you can hear a pin drop and any sort of scuffle or shout would be audible from another floor. And sure, his organisation recruits young, but they don't recruit that young. "Oh," he says, his jaw untightening. "Yeah, it's- that." The cover shines as he turns to show her for a moment, the illustration of Roxana bright and glossy. "It's not very good, to be honest."

Ophelia nods. He looks a little uneasy, and she's briefly worried it's because she isn't as good at communicating as someone who's verbal. The thought dissolves very quickly, though; this guy looks like a nerd. Sure, sometimes they're the hardest type of guys to tolerate, but she doubts someone like her could make him any less comfortable in himself. He's welcome to whirl back around any time he wants. Roxana. She's never read it before, but that doesn't surprise her; she's been neglecting muggle literature these past few years, which is ridiculously stupid, she knows. Wizards are lousy at anything that derives from muggle arts. His comment does make her brow furrow, curious about his opinion. She scrunches up her nose twice and lifts a hand, hoping believing he's smart enough to take the hint. Assuming he's okay with making idle conversation. (She heard the English aren't very good at that, but she's learned to take her step-mom's opinions with a grain of salt.)

The beckoning causes his worry to flare up again, just for a brief moment - are they trying to manoeuvre him into a more open space? To be an easier target? - but that dissolves as quickly as it appears. His colleagues are all dumb as shit, and it's not like they actually do that much hunting. He and Mia are the ones who bring the most wizards in - which, in light of recent events, makes a hell of a lot more sense than it did before. Fuck. He always wondered why Mia was so good at it. He really should have made that connection before. And besides, if he's sat next to some random non-wizard, he's much safer than just sitting alone. Even if he has to endure small talk for a few hours. "Sure," he nods, slipping out of the nook and wandering over to the girl, holding out the book so she can read the blurb. "Have you read it? It's nothing special. I've got to study it at A-Level and I'm trying to get a head start, but it's like walking through mud."

Ophelia is confused and a little alarmed when the guy stands up, because she really just wanted him to explain what he was thinking, but the himbo energy he's emanating is admittedly too sweet for her to feel encouraged to tell him to back off. The mix-up does make Ophelia grin, biting the inside of her cheek just in time to stop herself from laughing. She sets down her own script, tucking her phone in between the pages before taking the offered book. She skims over it inquisitively, bobbing her head in a nod. This is something I'd read, she muses. His question draws her out of her thoughts, and she shakes her head. Ophelia isn't a big fan of relying on tech to communicate, but Elijah sounds a little miserable when talking about the book and she just has to pitch in. She grabs her phone quickly, typing in her birthday to unlock it before opening the notes app. "I've never read it before, but it sounds like something I'd be super into. We don't know each other, but if you want and there's another copy available, I could try to wad through it and help with your assignment!" Satisfied with what she's written, she presents it to him with a dimpled smile.

Himbo energy isn't exactly something he's ever attempted or desired to give off, considering the fact he rarely ever smiles, but whatever, he'll take it; anything that keeps him in the vicinity of her and therefore safer than on his own is an advantage. The phone screen lights up and he leans forward slightly in his chair, brow furrowing a little to read the message. If it was pretty much anybody else, he would have refused point-blank and not very courteously, but the sheer niceness of the message reminds him so much of Sarai that it's almost disorientating. That's something she would do - offer to help with an assignment of a book she's never read, for a guy whose name she doesn't know. No wonder she gets walked all over. "I'm sure I'll manage," is what he goes with, offering her a small smile to at least show his gratitude. "Besides, I wouldn't want to put anyone else through that -" He gestures towards the novel in her lap, eyebrows raised. "- if they didn't have to. Which school do you go to?" Considering their location, it has to be Coombe Wood or Harris Academy. That's another one of the benefits of coming to this library: he doesn't run into any of his own schoolmates.

Ophelia nods. She wouldn't have minded helping him, but she's also not surprised, considering she's just a stranger. They probably would never see each other again, anyways. She did her best by putting the offer out there. When he smiles, Ophelia's face splits into a smile as well, mirroring his expression. At the question, she pauses. She can't say Hogwarts or Ilvermorny, but she has one saving grace — she isn't from around here. So with her phone back in her hand, she locks it to show him her lockscreen: a picture of her at Lincoln Memorial. She feels so patriotic showing him that image, which isn't her intention at all. Maybe she should change it to a picture of her during one of her weekend trips to New York City. She has enough of those. "American," she signs, even with the language barrier. She uses the fingerprint to unlock her phone, reluctantly typing out another note. "My dad lives here. I'm visiting for the summer." Ophelia pauses, her finger hovering over the "intro" button for a moment. After a moment of hesitation, she continues writing. "Are you from London, or just visiting the city?"

Hearing that she's from America, of all places, brings a pang of both relief and sadness: relief because it means she's definitely not a student at his siblings' school (though he really has to get out of the habit of assuming everybody he meets is magic - his job and family have really skewed his expectations) and sadness because, well, he's likely the only kid in his uber-rich private sixth form who hasn't been abroad. His family has always been more than wealthy enough to afford such trips, but as soon as Az and the curtain incident happened, it was deemed too dangerous to let him out of the country, let alone to venture to a different continent. "London, born and bred," he responds with a smile, peering a little at the screen and recognising the Lincoln Memorial. "You live in Washington, then? Or is that picture just from a trip?"

"Born in Pennsylvania, but raised in Washington," she types, "My moms work for the federal government, super high up, so we left the sort-of farm life for the heart of the political world." It's not really like she can brag about travelling, either; the only places she's been are just over two-thirds of the continental states, Puerto Rico, Canada, and now the UK. She's hoping to visit Italy at some point this summer, but with the move, she isn't holding her breath. "You wouldn't happen to be willing to name a few places you think I should visit?" She waits for a second so he can read the message, before continuing. "Seeing London from a tourist's eyes isn't half as fun as from a local's, right? Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, that's stuff I learn about in books." Ophelia pauses. She considers spitting out some kind of fact, establish that she isn't all talk, but decides not to. She's in a library during her summer vacation. Says a lot about her. "There's gotta be more to a city like London."

Oh, she's a politician's kid? Suddenly he's less worried about her being a witch and more worried about the fact that she's here, seemingly on her own, in London. God knows it's a dangerous city at the best of times. Mostly because of him and his colleagues. "The tourist spots are worth visiting, to be honest, but they're obscenely expensive," he says, leaning back in the armchair and pulling out his own phone to quickly whizz through the camera roll. Being the only 'normal' child of the family means that his parents care much less about where he goes and what he does with his day, and his classmates - especially Mia - are always up for a trip out into the city. "Plus you'll most likely get fleeced the minute they realise you're not from around here. The cable cars are fun, though, and Brick Lane Market if you like collecting little trinkets and souvenirs and things." His screen brings up a photo of the gardens, where he once took Sarai a few years ago, and he turns the device to show her. "The Kew Gardens are huge, with a house and tropical plants, but you'll need a whole day to really explore it properly. How long did you say you're here for, again?"

Fleeced? She's guessing he means getting jumped. Ophelia might be part-fae, but considering how little she likes using magic on a good day, relying on it for defense isn't an appealing idea. She's 95% sure it'd backfire. So maybe, just maybe, sticking to the tourist hotspots wouldn't be a bad idea. "Money isn't really a problem," she discloses, shrugging a shoulder when she presents her phone again. "All the way until late August," she adds to the already written text, in response to his question. Kew Gardens. Wait... "There's a neighborhood in Queens with that name." Ophelia remembers reading up on Betty Friedan a few years ago; the mother of the second feminist wave in America, and one of the people Ophelia aspires to be more like. "Someone I admire used to live there," she notes. Brick Lane Market does pique her interest, and she files the knowledge away for the next time she's in the mood to explore the city with her dad. She loves collecting little trinkets. You never know what hidden treasures you'll find.

"You've come to the right place, then," he says with a smirk, regarding the money comment; he's just as well-off, but the concept of principle usually prevents him from buying pretty much anything in London. When the price of coffee creeps up to six or seven quid, it's almost immoral to pay for it. "Someone you admire... let me guess. Either Bob Dylan, Roy Wilkins or Betty Friedan." It's a random skill to have, knowing where famous or notable people live, but Elijah likes collecting knowledge and information the same way one collects buttons or stamps. "I'm going to guess the latter. You don't strike me as a '60s folk fan."

Ophelia scoffs, looking offended by his assumption. Her typing is fast and furious, and when she glances at him at some point between words, she shakes her head. "I'll have you know 'Hurricane' is the perfect song to play when you're driving through the countryside at 90 miles an hour," she refutes. She went as far as to bold and underline perfect to emphasize her point. "And by the way — Roy Wilkins? Pennsylvanian legend. Leading reason why I'm so proud to come from there, even if he was from Philly. Not a bad city, but I'm biased to Pittsburgh." Ophelia waits for him to digest what she's telling him, before continuing. "But yeah, Betty. She emboldened women all over the world. And come on, you have to admit — don't iron while the strike is hot is a pretty cool slogan."

Whilst 1960s feminism isn't a topic he's particularly well-educated on - he's yet to cover it in politics class - he can understand the charm of living on the same street as its creator. The furiousness of Ophelia's typing makes Elijah bite back a smirk, as does the formatting choice, and he nods politely along with her spiel. In truth, the various states and cities are pretty alien to him; sure, he can point them out on a map, but he's never even left the country before. "It is a good slogan. If you want to visit more feminist places, there's the East End Women's Museum, and the Feminist Library in Peckham. We were dragged there on a school trip, once. If you're here until August then you've more than enough time to explore."

Ophelia plans to visit each place he's listing, no doubt about that; she's heard of some of them, but London is not her area of expertise. She never thought she'd have the chance to venture through the capital, nevermind live in it. "Guess I've got a good list of places to hit up," she shows, smiling gratefully. "Thanks for that. I'm really excited to explore the city whenever I'm not so jet lagged." Tomorrow's going to be a bitch especially.

He usually wouldn't care about the wellbeing of a random stranger he's only just encountered, especially when he possesses no suspicions of magic ability or witchcraft, but the thought of a fifteen-year-old wandering around the city with no knowledge of its whereabouts bothers him a little. His own siblings are street-smart, they're probably safer running around London like stray dogs than they are in the house; Ophelia, however, doesn't particularly give off that vibe. Headstrong and independent, sure, but that's usually what causes trouble in London. "Are you going to be on your own?" he asks, a little furrow in his brow.

Ophelia arches an eyebrow, visibly confused by the question. "I think so? Unless you Brits are immune to the power of pepper spray and tasers." When she turns the screen to him, she cracks a playful grin. "I'd say come along, but for all I know, you could be a murderer," she adds. Her eyebrows knit together in faux suspicion of Elijah, lips pressing together as she squints at him. "You don't seem like a murderer, though. I don't think murderers would lurk in a library like this one, reading... what was it, Roxana?" She can't write that without thinking of Roxanne. It's not even a good song. God, this is what she gets for going down a Best of Tiktok: 2020 compilation at 3am.

Ouch. A ripple of nausea goes through him at her observations, as sarcastic as they are, concealing it behind the smirk that lights up his face. Better to just ignore that, instead catching onto her first comment like a fish on a hook. "Well, for one, both pepper spray and tasers are illegal in this country, so if you were to encounter the need to use them, you would face punishment as well as your assailant," he points out, gesturing towards the bag at her feet with a small jerk of his head. "Besides, the thieves and pickpockets are proficient. You have to be, in a city like this. So I'd recommend finding a tour guide or at least somebody you trust." And no, before you ask, he's not offering himself as a personal guide. He has much better things to do with his day than guide a politican's daughter around London. Besides, he has to be at home. Someone needs to keep an eye on the twins.

"I'll be fine," she assures him. Legalities tend to matter a little less when she knows she can hide behind her step-mum's job and her dad's money. Maybe it isn't morally correct, but it's better than relying on a wand when she a) doesn't want to, and b) really can't. What else could she do, walk around with a knife? She's more likely to stab herself on accident. "I probably won't get to go around the city by myself, anyways. I don't think my dad would like that very much. So really, I'll be okay."

Not to sound like a patronising teenager who thinks he knows the world but in Elijah's defence, he does know how dangerous the city can be, for both normal people and wizards alike. Still, he relents with a sceptical glance, diverting his attention back to the novel as he leans forward to retrieve it. It's nearly four-hundred pages, and the assignment is due in three days... yeah, that's doable. "What novels would a murderer read, in your opinion? Surely not something that would give them away. I doubt you would find a murderer sat here, reading In Cold Blood or How to Hide a Body."

Ophelia is ready to get back to the playscript, but his question is so irresistible that she looks back up at him with a quizzical quirk of her eyebrows. She stares at him for a second before hastily tapping: "Except yes, they probably would. Any reasonable person would think they wouldn't, so who would glance twice at anyone with the balls to do it?" Ophelia pauses and squints. I hope that made sense, she thinks. "What, you think a killer would sit around and indulge in some light, psychologically fictional reading? Don Quijote, maybe?" she smirks. Ophelia sees a chance here and is quick to take it, but doesn't delude herself into thinking he'll know what she's quoting. "I'll tell you what, I love it when serial killers have their own little thing. I don't approve of serial killers, but I think if you're gonna kill a bunch of people, you might as well have some fun with it. So y'know what? Literary killers? I can get behind that."

He can tell he's being goaded, playfully as such but still, poking a politics student with a stick to provoke discussion is a trick Elijah will fall for every time. What can he say? He likes having the last word. "It is usually the little things that trip them up. Search history results, library book withdrawals, media consumption. There have been plenty of cases where killers have been caught because they Googled guns or methods of body disposal." How the witch hunters dispose of bodies is a question he's never asked, and honestly does not want to know the answer to; likely something ridiculous, like throwing them into the Thames with rocks tied to their limbs or incinerating them in a furnace. Spells surely must exist that make objects disappear, or at least disintegrate them for easier disposal, but he has yet to attempt any of them - mostly because they are probably far beyond his ability level, especially without a wand, but also because that would make his job feel a little bit too real. At least if he doesn't commit the actual murder, he can pretend he doesn't share the responsibility for it. Cognitive dissonance is a powerful tool. "How would killing people be fun?" Speaking from experience, it really isn't.

Elijah's engagement makes a jaunty grin stretch across Ophelia's face. Letting him tear off into his little rant, she absentmindedly taps the back of her phone case, occasionally dragging it to mimic the beat of Promiscuous Girl. She's had the song stuck in her head for days. His reference to the small things makes her hum a long, skeptical mmmm. "You're not wrong, but that isn't the kind of thing that would give them away immediately. You need to research that kind of crap. Corporations don't just give out that kind of inforrmation — privacy clauses and all. If we keep it to the original point in question, books they're actually reading in the middle of a library for anyone to see, then my point stands. You wouldn't think twice of it. I mean, take me for example. I'm a whooping 5'7, slim blonde that, mind you, is deaf and doesn't look like she could carry groceries into a house. If I were reading some genereic Guide to Killing, from your Friendly Serial Killer, would you think that's something I can do? No, right? 'Cause you wouldn't think I have the strength, the smarts, and the audacity." God, her thumbs are killing her already. "I have a mean right hook, though. Don't be fooled," she adds to the block of text, and when she turns the phone towards him, she wiggles her eyebrows playfully. "I'm not saying killing anyone is fun, but if you leave me in the same room as a bigot, doing some light population control wouldn't be too bad of an idea, y'know?"

It's a little awkward, waiting for her to type out the messages - which seem to be getting longer and longer with every exchange of dialogue, and it wouldn't surprise him if she ends up developing carpel tunnel at some point in the near future - but once they're completed and he can lean forward to read them again, the pinch in his brow dissolves into something of amusement. She has a point, how she looks small and young and blonde enough to not be perceived as threatening, but Elijah knows that doesn't really count in reality; plenty of the witch hunters look harmless. Just look at Mia. He obviously can't argue that, though, so instead bites the bullet, lips turning down at the corners in agreement. "Good point." She can think she's won this one. Her last few sentences elicit a laugh, mind instantly straying to - unforgivably, perhaps - his parents. You couldn't get more bigoted than them, at least towards witches - ironic, coming from the hunter. "You would have a field day at my school, then. Most of them think themselves to be superior. Politics class is as entertaining as you can imagine."

Ophelia would agree that it can get awkward at times; it's why she abhors so much communicating through technology when she's with someone. But considering he probably doesn't know sign language, she doesn't feel at all comfortable with talking, and magic is a no-go, she doesn't have a lot of options. At this rate, she'll either lose her fingers or end up volunteering to teach anyone she becomes friends with sign language for free. It's not like it's hard, once you get used to it through practice. "Oh, Jesus fuck, I'd love to be in the same room as a bunch of politics students," The message reads, in big, Times New Roman letters. "What about you, stranger? Do you think you're superior, too?"

The change in font size is welcome but he does feel a little bad that she is the one accomodating him at the moment. He should have taken that BSL course his sixth form was offering last month. Does he think he's superior? Big question. Elijah hesitates for a second, allowing himself another laugh at her blasphemous exclamation to hide the mini-second dilemma he experiences right there and then; ask anybody and they'll say yes, he's pretentious as fuck and thinks himself to be far more intelligent than he is (incorrect - he's very clever, he'll have you know). But no, he's not superior at all. He hid and watched his siblings go through hell. That's hardly superior. "No, I don't believe I do," he smirks a little, eyes darting down to the book again. "Being born into decent circumstances doesn't make me superior to anybody else. Just luckier. Many of my classmates, however, would agree to disagree." That sounds selfless enough, right?

Ophelia can't help it: she laughs. It's light and spirited, not at all mean; just amused by that closing comment that feels almost like he's brushing over. "They think you're a prick, don't they?" she teases in writing, her head falling back slightly as she laughs again when she turns the screen towards him. "It's fine. I get written off as a dickhead sometimes too, but it's not like you can really help who you're born to, y'know?" Here's the thing: Ophelia isn't a politics student (though she plans to be as soon as she graduates Hogwarts and applies to the big league schools), but she can sort of relate. Being a politician's daughter — and another's stepdaughter — has admittedly given her certain privileges that others might not have. She acknowledges and understands that, and sometimes it's true that she takes it for granted. "So you study politics, then? That's your whole... I dunno, thing?" There's an abundance of question marks after the question, and a few more below it, with a quick idk, like, your major or whatever? your country's school system is weird following those marks.

Politics being his thing isn't so much to do with his desire to be an MP in the future - with the connections his father has, it shouldn't be particularly difficult to give his potential campaign a boost - but more so because conflict is all he's ever known and thus he thrives in that environment. As toxic as an upper-class politics class obviously is, it's certainly never boring. You learn some good comebacks, too. "You could say that. I study it alongside English-" He gestures to the book for a moment. "-and history. And classics, but that isn't a full course, more like an extra-credit situation. I assume you're more than sick of politics, considering how exposed to it you must be." Lord knows Elijah possesses far more knowledge about banking and economics and the moral bankruptcy of UBS than he would ever wish to.

Ophelia doesn't offer a direct verbal response, instead shaking her head with a slightly insulted lift of her eyebrow. "It's what I want to study in college. I want to double up with either national security or criminology. My mom, she's technically a politician, but only because she's the Director of the FBI. You need the president's sway for that nomination. But my step-mother works for the CIA —" Wait, maybe she shouldn't have told a complete stranger that. Not that she gets high-risk assignments; she's basically almost the director, too. "— so it's something I'm really into. A Senate seat would be cool, but I'm still fielding my options." Senator Jareau. She could definitely get behind that. "History's amazing, though. I'd like to minor in it, or maybe geography." Lord knows she has the brains for both. "Do you do European history, or is it more like world history?" she queries, cocking her head slightly. She grins. "'Cause if it's the second one, I can promise you a way to condense all of it into an entertaining 19 minutes."

He misses the look of insult on Ophelia's face as he's too busy reading the message, his own eyebrows flying up at the revelation that- "Director of the FBI?" He manages to catch his voice at the last minute, lowering the volume to a hiss as he remembers their location, but shit. No wonder she felt so invincible at the prospect of wandering around London; anybody who dared attempt to rob or in any way affect her would have the entire weight of the FBI come down on their shoulders. "And the CIA? Wow. I take back what I said about being careful in London, you're likely better protected than Fort Knox." The idea of following in his own parent's footsteps is almost nauseating to Elijah; politics is bad enough, but banking would utterly drain him. But it's not like he has any other options. The wizarding world isn't worth a second thought and- well, simply put, he can't imagine himself doing anything that his father would disagree with. Ugh. "The course is structured around world history, but we are currently focusing on the industrialisation of Britain. Utterly fascinating," he drawls towards the end. It is somewhat interesting, but it could be much better. "Are you talking about that meme video - the entire history of the world, or something? Trust me, I've seen it. My friend attempted to memorise it for her History GCSE."

"Made by the same dude that made the very iconic thanks for checking in, I'm still a piece of ~garbage~ jingle," she nods. When he processess the whole my parents are cool script she wrote out for him, she laughs quietly. Everyone always has such dramatic reactions. She gets it, it's impressive, but it's also just a glorified police job that take her moms away from her for too long of a time. "Dunno, I'd compare myself more to Area 51. Cool, mysterious, impenetrable." The jokes she could make from the comparison. She purses her lips to stifle the laugh that threatens to erupt from her throat. I'm mature. I swear to God I'm mature. "Yeah, that doesn't sound too fun. The mother of modern capitalism. It created a shitty economic system and for what? For a country that lost so much fucking power, you'd think they'd let up on the idea of perpetuating the endless born at the bottom, stay at the bottom cycle. Grow the fuck up, Britain." Pause. A beat later, she raises an eyebrow. "Did she do good on her GCSE?"

The rant about Britain stabs whatever tiny patriotic pride lives within him, which really isn't much - she isn't wrong, after all - but not enough so to make him roll his eyes or be remotely annoyed. Though the irony of an American complaining about losing power is rather amusing, considering the country's hegemonic decline in the past few decades. It's all a big game of chess, at the end of the day. "She passed it with flying colours. Thank you, still a piece of garbage man." A part of him wonders about what the assessments at Hogwarts look like; Sarai often mentions them, though merely refers to them as just exams, and the textbook he stole said something about owls? And newts? No clue. But it's yet another thing to mindlessly think about when he allows himself to, even if it feels like walking through a viper pit. "What are exams in America like? I think I've only heard of the SATs, and we sit tests called that when we're eleven years old."

Without skipping a beat, she pulls a disgusted face. She might not be a muggle, but like any other teenage nerd, she's taken at least one PSAT annually since winter 2043. Ophelia has to admit, Ilvermony tests have nothing on the presssure of figuring out the value of a constant when it's equal to all but one value of another variable in about a minute and a half. "It's disgusting. It'd be one thing if it were about something you willingly studied, like the AP exams —" She already took the AP Government and AP Psychology ones, just before coming to the UK. "— but God, I wouldn't wish the SAT on my worst enemy. You could take the ACT instead, but it's just a matter of picking your poison and hoping for the best." She supposes she's about to find out if it really compares to OWLs, though. Sadly. It's not like it even matters. She plans to ditch the wizarding world as soon as she can. The only reasons she hasn't dropped out are because her mothers would kill her, and Ophelia personally would never survive the blow to her ego being a dropout would deliver. "You Brits have it good. Studying what you want so soon? Fuck, I'd be the happiest politics student in your school."

GCSEs were not particularly challenging for Elijah, he'd breezed through them with little difficulty, and he isn't particularly worried about his upcoming A-Levels; exams are exams, you study for a month or two beforehand then happily forget it all as soon as the two hours finish. But the concept of the SAT does not sound appealing whatsoever, and he grimaces at Ophelia's description, rearing back a little from her phone as he shakes his head. "Sounds brutal. You should consider studying over here when you go to university, though. Our schools are notoriously dire but at least our unis are good." Oxbridge is most likely his destiny; to study social sciences or history or something equally as drawl. There's no doubt that he'll achieve the grades to get in, but God knows what will happen if he doesn't get accepted. That won't be a pleasant conversation with his father.

"I've thought about it. Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, ICL. But I'm also interested in a few Ivy Leagues. Columbia University and UPenn specifically, but Brown is a strong contender. I can't stand the idea of Yale or Havard, though." What can she say? She's an overachiever. Ophelia takes the pause to stretch out her thumbs and grab her previously abandoned cup to finish her drink. She's enjoying the conversation, but a quick glance out the window confirms what she already suspected; it's getting late, and if she isn't back home soon, she might die at the hands of her merciless step-mother. "Not to cut our conversation short, but I think I should head out soon."

He too hadn't realised just how much time has passed since they started talking, glancing out the window and double-taking at the sight of dusk coming to claim the sky. Shit. Hopefully the twins decided to go to the cinema or into one of their weird magic spots or something - out of the house, out of the way of their father. As depressing as it is, Elijah has mastered the art of subtly scanning his siblings' faces and arms for fresh bruises the second he lays eyes on them. "Wow, talk about time running away with us." He takes the copy of Roxana and finds its place on the shelf, slotting it in and trying not to think about yesterday, where he'd sent one of his A-Level textbooks flying back to its place on his bedside table with a flick of his wrist. It had soared through the air and landed with a graceful thud, and he hadn't even realised what he'd done until a few moments after, his blood running cold in his veins. "Many thanks for keeping me company and rescuing me from my coursework. It was much appreciated."

Ophelia grins and offers a thumbs up to Elijah. She admittedly stalls for a second, though, thinking, wondering, until finally, she decides — fuck it. "I'm gonna be in England for a while, and I think spending the summer completely alone would be pretty shitty. I dunno if you're in the mood to make a new friend, but if you are, my Instagram handle is @linewithoutahook. Don't feel, like, pressured to follow me or reach out or anything. You have... schoolwork and stuff. But, y'know, if you ever feel the need for a new distraction... I don't have paper on me, but if you forget my handle, just look for the FBI director's profile. I'm one of the few accounts she follows. Kind of hard to miss." She's smiling when she extends the phone for a final time. While he reads the text, she begins to gather everything she had, going ass far as to set the small script away. However enjoyable it was, she doesn't have time to finish it now.
