Auror Office

all times listed are IC

  • No NEWT requirements. These will still be a recommendation, but poor scores/no scores will not disqualify anyone.
  • In place of NEWT requirements will be an entrance exam made of four parts:
    • Personal/background info
    • Written exam on magical knowledge and some theoretical scenarios
    • Practical exam on magical ability
    • Physical fitness test
    • View the refreshed registration questionnaire here!
  • Performance on the entrance exam will determine interview eligibility. As per the current style, users will have the option of a traditional style RP interview and an IC questionnaire style interview.
  • What if my character has special circumstances that may impact performance on the entrance exam or their ability to complete it?
    • These cases will be addressed as they arise. Currently, the only characters not eligible for employment in the Auror Office are squibs with no magical peculiar abilities, although exceptions could be made for non-field positions in which no magical ability is required.
    • From an IC point of view, characters with peculiar abilities in place of standard wix magic will be tested on those separately as the need arises.
  • What about new characters who are already aurors?
    • The current application process will stay the same. New characters who are already employed in the British Auror Office will still apply and fill out the registration form as though it is a performance review - so it should be filled out at the current point in their career.
    • The process is the same for aurors transferring from other countries.
      • Aurors transferring from other countries have a three-month integration period to become familiar with the British Auror Office's policies and procedures.
      • If they have not completed training with the office they are transferring from, they will be placed into the appropriate phase to finish prior to becoming a full auror.

  • Phase One
    • 4 months
    • Intensive training in magical law, de-escalation, crisis intervention, interpersonal skills, and department/investigative procedures.
    • This phase is most widely applicable to other departments in the ministry, which is why it comes first.
  • Phase Two
    • 4 months
    • Intensive hands-on and theoretical training in first aid, survival, combat, hostage situations, and group work.
    • Applied skills training where they must combine what they have learned to complete an objective.
    • This phase is the most magically and physically demanding.
  • Phase Three
    • 4 months
    • Trainees will shadow experienced aurors on run-of-the-mill cases and assist with the associated investigation/casework/day-to-day support.
    • This is where they get a taste of the main divisions so they can make an informed choice.
    • After training, new aurors can go directly into either PSI or MiST.

  • PSI: Public Support and Investigations
  • PSI aurors provide security at public events and in public areas, handle regular criminal investigations, and are generally the first to respond to developing situations.
  • Primarily permanent assignment.

  • Aurors fresh out of training can go directly to PSI with no extra training and will be primarily in a support role.

All divisions have ongoing self-improvement training and yearly performance exams to ensure they are physically, mentally, and magically up to continue their work.

Start to finish times are from the first day of auror training to the last day of division-specific training, including any required experience. These times are the minimums - some aurors may take more time, but no one will take less time.
    • Entry training: Aurors fresh out of training can go directly to PSI with no extra training and will be primarily in a support role.
    • Investigator training: PSI aurors can take investigator training at any time. During this four-month course, they split their time between in-depth investigation training and their regular work. After passing the course, they can switch to primarily an investigative role if desired.

  • MiST: Ministry Security Team
  • MiST aurors handle security on ministry property and the security of ministry officials and events both domestic and abroad.
  • Primarily permanent assignment.

  • Aurors fresh out of training can go directly to MiST with no extra training and will be primarily location-based security.

  • Personnel security training (PerSec): MiST aurors can take the four-month PerSec course at any time. During the course, they split their time between their regular work and in-depth bodyguard training to prepare for assignment to ministry officials’ dedicated security details.
  • Start to finish: One year, four months

  • RySC: Royal Support Coordinators
  • RySC aurors are in charge of security coordination for royalty on UK soil and assist as needed with security coordination for traveling royals from the UK or in the care of the UK.
  • Primarily permanent assignment. RySC is usually kept to a skeleton crew and assisted as needed by other divisions, so permanent assignments are not common.

  • Aurors looking to enter RySC must have completed the MiST PerSec course and the PSI investigation course, plus have at least a year of experience in either division before transferring.

All divisions have ongoing self-improvement training and yearly performance exams to ensure they are physically, mentally, and magically up to continue their work.

  • Start to finish: Two years, six months

  • HIT: Hostage and Intelligence Team
  • HIT aurors handle short- and long-term undercover operations and oversee hostage situations and negotiations.
  • Primarily permanent assignment.

  • Aurors looking to enter HIT must have completed the MiST PerSec course and the PSI investigation course, plus have at least two years of experience in either division and a passing mental fortitude exam before transferring.

    • Entry training: HIT aurors will complete a six-month course on undercover operations, espionage, and hostage negotiations followed by extra training as-needed depending on focus and assignment.
    • Start to finish: Three years, six months

  • STaRT: Special Tactics and Response Team
  • STaRT aurors handle high-danger operations, such as those taking place in extremely volatile situations, in dangerous or volatile environments, against known violent targets, or in other such instances where a high degree of skill is required and there is great personal risk to those aurors involved.
  • STaRT aurors are cross-assigned to other divisions, and split their time between the other division and training for/engaging in STaRT operations as needed.

  • Aurors looking for cross-assignment to STaRT must have completed HIT entry training and pass a mental fortitude and wellness exam before applying.

All divisions have ongoing self-improvement training and yearly performance exams to ensure they are physically, mentally, and magically up to continue their work.

STaRT training is a full year, split between their normal work and training. Some of it is weeks of training at a time, while other parts are a few hours a day or a few days a week. The training is mentally, physically, and magically intensive, and involves survival training in extreme environments, operating in/around/with dangerous or volatile creatures/substances, and training in how to handle encounters with advanced dark magic.
