Entrance Hall

The Entrance Hall (also known as the Front Hall) is located on the ground floor of Hogwarts School of Witchraft and Wizardry. Two big doors toward the right lead into the Great Hall. The Hufflepuff Common Room, Kitchens, Dungeons, and the Grand Staircase can be accessed through the Entrance Hall. There is also an annex off the hall, where the professor who helps in sorting speaks to first years before the Sorting ceremony at the beginning of each school year. This is a very important factor in the beauty of Hogwarts.

Hana has decided, rather controversially, to stay at Hogwarts for break instead of going home. It's definitely out of spite because she's still upset with her parents for forcing her into an arranged marriage (even though that's been cancelled now, for some reason, which she learned via howler) and telling her about it right after everything that had happened, but she'd tell everyone else it's because she wants to focus on schoolwork and can't study at home. The idea of spending Christmas alone is rather... depressing. She hates the cold and she just wants to go home, but she has too much pride to the point she might actually choke trying to swallow it. She waits here by the staircase for Jude; she had texted him about class and they agreed to meet up. They need to discuss how they're splitting their pair works over break – maybe it was a bad idea to partner with her ex-boyfriend in everything.

Jude has almost the same thought about partners - nearly every class is torture now, trying to maintain the balance between keeping up his grades and dealing with his heartbreak and trying to be there for Hana (but not too there, if that makes sense). He received her text to meet up just as he was leaving Hogsmeade Manor after his awkward meet-up with Aoibh - his fiancée. Merlin. - and he thinks it's kind of pathetic of him to rush back to meet her even after everything, but he does it anyway. "Hi," he greets, stopping a few metres from her. "You wanted to talk about the pair work?"

She's using her phone when Jude arrives, and even if he stops a couple meters away she's still startled by whoever's talking to her. She feels her heart stop for a second, then she looks up and realizes oh. Nothing to be afraid of, it's just Jude. Although interacting with him does worry her nowadays... He has every reason to hate her and somehow, he's still being so kind. "Yes." she says, trying to dispel the negative thoughts from her head. God knows there are far too many of those already. "I just figured it would be smart to split it already since you won't be staying for break, right?"

The way she tenses for a split second is enough to make him frown - sure, he might not be talking to her anywhere near as much as he was before (obvious reasons) but he knows her well enough by now to be able to gauge her mood. But would she appreciate him asking? Probably not. He stops himself from asking what's wrong, settling instead on: "Sorry if I startled you." That's safe, right? "And, uh- yeah. My mother wants me home to talk about things." Arranged marriage-related things, but that's a sensitive topic here now. He slips his hands into his pockets awkwardly, pausing before he continues. "Did you have any parts you wanted to do in particular?"

Hana goes through a list in her head of all the work they've been assigned. "We both know you're better than me at Potions; I mean, we both know you're the best in our year in general, so if you want you can be the one to brew the Polyjuice Potion over break?" Of course, the two of them had picked the most ambitious potion assignment possible. Normally, she'd apologize for the hassle but she's being strategic and she knows that Jude would do it perfectly. The compliment comes out naturally, too, before she can stop herself. Constant praise has always been Hana's way of telling someone she loves them. "And I can be the one to write the accompanying essay and decode the codex that we were given for Ancient Runes." It's a dozen pages and it'll take forever, but she thinks that's fair considering he'll be the one brewing an actual potion over break. "I'm staying in Hogwarts, anyway, so I'll have access to the library." she adds, hoping he doesn't think much of it. She hates winter here and she's been very vocal about that in the past – but she really doesn't feel like being around her parents this break.

"Are you sure? I can write the essay for potions myself if you want to take a subject each. Polyjuice is a lot of waiting between steps anyway so it wouldn't be a hassle." The only other thing he's doing this holiday is testing his wolfsbane improvements with Gabri, and they shouldn't be too strenuous. He's confident it'll go perfectly. Failure (academically) doesn't really happen to Jude. "You're... staying at Hogwarts? Is that for the ball?" Merlin, does she have a new boyfriend already? He knows she doesn't like the cold, so that's the only logical explanation, isn't it?

"As the winners, Professor Chevalier said it would be preferable if Tate and I stayed at least until the ball is over. We agreed if one of us goes, the other will, and I think he wants to, so..." she answers. It's not the whole truth but she isn't sure how to explain to Jude that she's still fighting with her parents over trying to marry her off to some random prince. Breaking up with him was dreadful; she'd rather not dredge up memories of that day for either of them. "I'm not particularly excited but I wasn't either about the last ball and I ended up enjoying." She ended up enjoying because of Jude, of course, so the chances of her having fun at this one too are rather bleak. "I'll stay until it's done then decide whether or not I want to go home then." She's pretty much made up her mind, but she doesn't want to concern him too much.

The reassurance that she deserves this and that she's a winner is much appreciated – it also makes her feel like everything she's going through now is worth it. She wants to tell him she couldn't have done it without his support. "Thank you." is what she says instead. It's so odd to her how awkward things between the two of them have become. She'd wish they never dated in the first place but Hana doesn't think she had ever felt more content and at peace than when they were together. "Are you going?" she asks, mostly just to see if he's going with someone else. "To the ball? Or are you just going straight home?"

Merlin, this is awkward. She tries as hard as she can to not sound as bitter as she feels, and succeeds, but instead it just comes out rather... indifferent, which is nowhere close to the storm of emotions brewing in her head. She has no right to be jealous; she broke up with him because of her duty which she chose to prioritize. And Jude was always too good for her in the first place. Someone nicer like Aoibh might be better for him, definitely, and the two of them have seemingly known each other since forever. "Cute." she says, forcing a smile. "It's so great the two of you are so close."

Hana's indifference comes across as just that, and Jude assumes she either a) doesn't care what he does (which he thinks is likely) or b) understands that Aoibh and he have a very platonic relationship. So he doesn't feel bad when he continues. "I think so too! We've known each other since before we could walk." A pause. "I'm glad you and Tate seem close, too! You were a good team."

The idea of Jude going to the ball with someone he's known since 'before they could walk' is upsetting to Hana, but she smiles anyway and tries to swallow down the bitterness. She has to be happy for him; it would be extremely unfair to act hostile about this. "I definitely agree." she says. She and Tate did make an excellent team during the tournament. Of course, Hana's favorite team would consist of her and Jude, thus why she was so excited to be his partner everywhere, but she obviously can't say that now. "We've gotten really close since the tournament. It's actually quite nice being around him without the looming fear of possible death." She says the last bit like it's no big deal, chuckling a little, though it is definitely true. It's so much nicer being able to talk to Tate while walking around the castle during rounds without having to worry about casting a shield charm every five minutes.

Gotten really close. Jude tells himself that it's none of his business, because it isn't. Doesn't stop the flicker of jealousy in his stomach from rearing its head, though he forces himself to squash it. Tate is nice and it's good Hana has friends. Maybe she'll talk to them more than she does him - it's not hard to see she's struggling, recently. His voice is tentative when he asks, "How are you doing, after all that?" It's probably altogether the wrong thing to say and he knows that, but he's been worrying. Shoot him. "The tournament was overkill to the highest degree."

Hana's gotten tired of people asking her how she's doing after the tournament. Had it been anyone else, she would've snapped but it's Jude. He's always the exception. "Well, I won, so I don't think it really matters." she replies, though it's obvious from the way she's talking that she's trying to convince herself more than she's trying to convince him. "It's nothing, really." she adds, hoping she doesn't sound too defensive. "I'll get over it."

There's a lot more he wants to say, and could say, but this is Hana. He doubts she'd react well to having it forced on her. Just like their engagement. Shut up, Jude. "I don't know, I think it'd be easier to get over it if you talked to someone. Not necessarily me! Anyone you trust. But I'm here if you need me."

Hana almost says something sharp and rude; she's sick of people telling her to talk to someone, but Jude's last remark makes her soften. She's been quite short with a lot of people lately, but again, he's the exception. The idea that he's still willing to be there for her after she broke up with him is almost too hard for her to wrap her head around, but it's Jude – he's always been the kindest person she knows. "I know you are." she says instead, quietly. "But you don't need to be, if you don't want to, either." she ends up saying too, no matter how painful it is to get the words out. She wants to say she knows things are quite awkward between them now, but that would be acknowledging there is a problem, and she's far too proud for that.
