Ernie, for the most part, is an extremely optimistic individual. He's always ready to help cheer someone on and doesn't mind taking a back seat if it means someone close to him can succeed. He always sees the positives in everything and encourages others to do the same. He aims to treat everyone with kindness, even those who don't like him since you can never know what they're going through to make them like that. It's rare that he's anything but happy and excitable, but it does happen.
When he gets nervous, Ernie develops a severe lisp. He hates it and his mother has been his rock through it. It's hard going from saying everything fine to having one of the worst lisps imaginable. He tries to hide it but, obviously, that's a hard thing to do and there's been many times in the past, especially when he was younger, where he was teased by the other kids without a second thought. It's made him a lot more self-conscious than he should be and he wishes now, in retrospect, that he never paid any attention to them.
When Ernie gets sad or angry, he likes to lock himself away. Whether than be literal or figurative. He doesn't like being anything less than happy or nervous as those are the two emotions he knows he can handle. When he's sad or angry he tends to get unpredictable and that's lead some to believe he might have anger issues of the sorts. He's notorious for his mood swings as well, meaning you can go one week of seeing him all the time to the next barely seeing him at all, as he shuts himself away from those who could judge him further.
History
Ernie was born in a very idyllic village in the south of England to two muggle parents who doted him and adored him. He had an older brother by three years, Aaron, who was the same. They were the perfect little family and everything was alright, save for as he got older.
When he was roughly four, they were involved in a car crash that claimed the lives of his father and brother. It hit him and his mother, hard. For a few years after that, neither of them were the same and it was only when his mother was convinced she saw the spirit of her husband telling them to move on and to be happy, did their mood start to improve. And it did. Ernie slowly got back to being the curious young boy he should've been and his mother became even more doting on her son, supporting him in every endeavour.
Ernie still suffered from flashbacks of the scene though, especially when he was in the car. That's how he had his first magical experience when he was eight, in fact. A car zooming past them on a road had scared him so much that he, unknowingly, began to change the surface around him. The seats of the car went from fabric to grass and needless to say his mother was confused, scared even. So she took him to her brother, the man who was just like Ernie - a muggle-born. He confirmed something his mother never knew if she wanted and, despite not knowing much about it (or as much as she'd like so she could protect her son), she continued to support him one hundred percent.
When he was eleven, Ernie got the letter for Hogwarts and that's where he's been ever since. It hasn't grown him much as a person as he always envisioned it would (based off his uncle's stories of his time there) but he knows there's still some time.
