  • born in anyang, south korea on 31 may 2004 to sasithorn charoensuk, a professional quidditch player, & min-seo yun, senior sales rep for a broom manufacturer
    • also has a younger brother named si-woo
      • they were close growing up, but fell out of touch as adults
  • moved to the us to min-seo's company's headquarters in chicago after she was promoted to director of north american sales in 2010
  • parents decided they'd send their kids to nusantara, sasithorn's alma mater
    • ji-hye attended from 7 to 18
      • her first sign of magic was a few months before she was due to start school
        • lit her own pants on fire! not fun
    • chose antaboga peak
    • excelled in research-based subjects & enjoyed those over others, but didn't actively dislike any of her classes
      • classmates, on the other hand...
        • most of them were fine! she didn't vehemently despise any of them most of the time. group work just...was not her favorite
    • graduated with decent marks - admittedly she could have done better, but she was confident enough in her grasp over broader subjects that she felt she could focus more on what she was directly interested in: making her impending application to the auror office look good
  • she took a liking to mystery and true crime stories as a child, and by her early teens she knew what direction she wanted to eventually take her career in.
    • sasithorn's brother was a victim of a case that was cold for decades, and after her rise to fame, sasithorn began donating to cold case research and support organizations - which was how ji-hye got her foot in the door with such organizations for summer internships and volunteer opportunities.
      • ji-hye initially approached these opportunities to focus on the investigative aspect, but she quickly found the interpersonal aspect was just as important
  • after nusantara, ji-hye went on to university for a master's degree in forensic criminology before applying to the auror office in chicago at 24
    • learned legilimency from her first partner after training
      • they were partners for six years, until ji-hye moved to the cold case task force, and it took most of those six years for her to confidently get a handle on legilimency.
      • due to her schooling, she primarily uses wandless magic, unless she's attempting something unfamiliar and/or excessively difficult or complex. now, after fifteen years of practice, she's able to perform the spell without the aid of a wand fairly reliably, but she still needs it when someone's mental defenses are formidable, or when she's trying to do something more complex like plant a memory.
  • ji-hye's descent into obsession with her job began shortly after she was assigned to the cold case task force. she'd always been dedicated and it was never unusual for her to cancel on friends or family for work, but after her new assignment began, her friends and family were lucky to get a response from her at all.
    • the exception, if you could call it that, was her wife, and by extension their young children.
      • ji-hye met yuliya at university through the sociology class they had together. they became friends quickly and were only that for several years. they began dating during ji-hye's final year of university, and married three years later
      • the marriage was a miracle - ji-hye canceled the engagement four times before it finally stuck. she was worried about not only maintaining a romantic relationship and her increasing responsibilities at work but also potentially having to make sacrifices in one for the other. yuliya ultimately assured her they could cross those bridges together when they came to them, but she didn't want to be left in limbo forever - and so they set a date, finally
      • ji-hye wouldn't admit it aloud, but half the reason she agreed to finalize the marriage was because she wasn't sure she could end things with yuliya either, and that seemed to be the only other option.
      • they decided mutually to have kids shortly before ji-hye's new assignment - and why wouldn't they? their marriage was going swimmingly - ji-hye worked late, yes, but living in the same apartment meant she'd be around to parent. yuliya, an editor for an independent publishing company, could work from home if needed and they could always enlist ji-hye's little brother for help if they were in a pinch
      • so they had twins! and it wouldn't be quite correct to say that's when things began going downhill, but the added stress of two newborns helped bring the existing problems to light
    • the primary reason ji-hye didn't fall out of touch with her wife and children as she did with her family is because they lived together - and ji-hye had a policy to not sleep at work, meaning she was always home for the night...even if that meant getting in at 2 am.
    • ji-hye did her best to pitch in with their kids, but finding a balance between staying up to care for them at night and getting enough sleep to function at work the next day was not easy. yuliya had the bright idea that she should bring work home instead of staying late, so she did - as much as she could. ji-hye's bedtime stories became case files read aloud, minus the pictures, of course. this seemed a good enough compromise early on - the kids were too young to understand the cases anyway - but as they began to understand what they could see and hear, ji-hye and yuliya decided it was best she leave work at work.
    • the majority of childcare fell to yuliya, and despite ji-hye's best efforts to contribute, she could never leave work alone long enough to make a real difference. the kids were five when they finally separated, and six when the divorce was finalized. yuliya was awarded sole custody due to the nature of ji-hye's job and her open support of custody going to yuliya. ji-hye's only consistent interaction with them is the child support payments she's set to automatic transfer, though the birthday gifts she sends are typically within about a month of the right date.
  • after the divorce, most of her personal life became drinks with coworkers and the occasional attempt to show up for the twins' events. there wasn't much holding her back before, but with even fewer distractions she was able to focus more on her work & became head of the task force in 2043. this gave her leave to pick and choose the cases they worked - thus giving her more access to a case that had been a personal hobby for years.
    • this case quickly became her white whale - it'd been cold for about fourty years by that time, and she'd made little progress since she began investigating it. her first major breakthrough came early in 2047 when she finally tracked down one of the original witnesses. this is the case that led her to England - initially on personal leave, but she's since turned in her resignation. her case seems to be staying in the UK for now, so she'll have to do the same.

  • Ji-Hye is great at compartmentalizing - so great, in fact, that she often forgets to un-compartmentalize things! That's why she forgot to go home for new year's until August. Work comes first for her - it's a challenge, and she's going to win it. Family is not unimportant to her, but those relationships are hard to keep up with since she doesn't work with them...and they aren't particularly challenging either. Her parents still accept her apologies when she does remember to reach out, but she's long since fallen out of touch with her brother, and as much as she would like to reconnect with her ex wife and their kids, her history of missing or bailing on important events makes that rather difficult.
  • She's very detail-oriented, but she doesn't let it bog her down. She's learned over the course of her adult life that sometimes you really do have to take a step back and look at the big picture to make progress.
  • The satisfaction of catching killers is wonderful, but she takes great pride in being the one to finally get justice for victims and their families. Cases are a bit of a game to her, yes, but she understands the stakes are high - but the rewards are higher.
  • As she knows how awful it can be to have your mind invaded, she does her best to avoid doing it without permission, but she isn't above it.

  • Lies and emotions
    • Whilst a legilimen cannot instinctively detect if a person is having an emotion or are lying, they can figure this out if the person thinks that they are having that emotion or that they are lying. Furthermore, for lying, if the legilimen does have a suspicion that the other person is lying then they can dig further into the person's brain to find out the truth (which needs permission). However, this is not a legilimen detecting lies, but the person themselves detecting that the other is lying.
  • Viewing memories
  • Reading thoughts
  • Planting visions:
    • Images are the easiest to plant but fake memories can also be inserted.
    • If the spell is used then these visions can last up to five minutes.
    • Furthermore, these visions tend to appear brighter than a normal memory or vision, as if it was under intensive light as it was happening. This is a method for people to figure out whether that vision or memory has been fabricated.
  • Causing pain to the target by rooting around in their mind and/or bringing painful memories to the surface
    • If the legilimen does bring up a memory, then they experience the same emotions that the other character is suffering from. If it is a painful memory, then the legilimen feels pain. If it is a happy memory, the legilimen feels happiness. And so on. Initially, it's too a lesser degree than the other person but if this ability is continued for an extended amount of time, then the intensity of the emotion deepens. Furthermore, this still holds true if it is broken up for a period amount of time.
