Forum: Index > Votes > Histories and Personalities

So I've been hearing some discussion on how difficult writing forums can be and that this can be a deterrence to making new characters. I have tried to curb that through the interviews, which will be renovated in the coming weeks and thank you for all those who filled out the survey, but this is to do with the traditional forums and the length of histories/personalities. What I propose is this: we return to being able to write histories and personalities in a bullet point system permanently. I introduced this last year as a temporary situation to boost activity and it worked moderately until some activity had returned and we returned to the typical policy. The alternative is to shorten the paragraph requirements for history to meet the personality requirements (i.e. two) or the child requirements. I've made the fourth option because they can be implemented with the third option being implemented regardless, if that makes sense.

Option One

  • We keep it as it is:
    • 3 paragraphs (21 sentences minimum) for history
    • 2 paragraphs (14 sentences minimum) for personality

Option Two

  • We minimise the history:
    • 2 paragraphs (14 sentences minimum) for history
    • 2 paragraphs (14 sentences minimum) for personality

Option Three

  • We make the requirements the same as children requirements:
    • 14 sentences for history
    • 7 sentences for personality.

Option Four

  • We allow people to write either the personality or the history in a bullet point system rather than full sentences
    • there would be no minimum sentences required but you may be asked to write more depending on the sorter's discretion
    • You can choose between the two and which one you write in bullet points.
      • The one fully written thus needs to be meet the requirements.

I do want to clear up and say you can make your history and personality in whatever format you wish already. You can do it through letters, poems. You can even draw a comic if you want. It just has to be a substantial amount and gives me everything I need.

Thank you!

Edit if you are confused:

Option Four is asking for the implementation of a way around the full sentences but if we decide the either/or option for bullet points and either personality and history need to be written in full then they need to reflect the writing requirements asked for option one. But if you do a bullet point history/personality that is simply not enough, the sorter holds the right to ask you to write more bullet points.

Comments

Hi, yes, hello. Not sure if anyone actually takes comments into consideration, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm a firm believer in full, complete histories because that makes characters real in a sense. Knowing where someone came from is a big part of understanding who they are. I think it is important to have that fully planned out before roleplaying a character. The personality however is a bit more debatable. I think people get to know their own characters better through role-playing them, so the personality doesn't need to be as airtight as a history. It's still smart to have pointers for a character's personality so they don't become a wishy-washy character though. All that being said, I think it's important to consider other users. Some users don't have the time or energy to channel their inner novel writer to flesh out a three (or more) paragraph history/personality. They may have a million ideas and things they want to include (which would make them have to write more), but that can be overwhelming. Having a bullet point system would enable users to get all their ideas out and into a character without having to dread actually writing out every little detail in formal sentences. Even if you don't agree with the bullet points, you can still vote for them. You can still write out your histories and personalities if you want - that's up to you! But voting for the bullet point policy means other users who find that an overwhelming and daunting task can have it a bit easier and feel more included. So when voting, please think outside yourself. That is all I ask. Thank you if you read this - I'm sorry it was rather boring XD

  • just proving my point further
  • people are more likely to read this than my message above
  • that's the same with personalities too
  • its quick and efficient
  • still gets the major points in
  • you can still do both!
  • they're fun
  • easy to brainstorm
  • thats all!

I just think people vibe with their characters differently from each other, and allowing them to navigate character creation on their own terms is cool. Options are cool. Also, not everyone wants to write an essay just to say their character had a bland life but hogwarts made it sparkle
