The Open-Ended Questions

A. Please answer the following questions as elaborately as possible. (Remember, this part is only a requirement for your third to fifteenth character! However, if you want to have more input on where you character is sorted, then please answer #6!)

1) What would you consider to be your character's strengths, and your character's weaknesses? Elaborate on your answer.

Ian's strengths would be is commitment and devotion to his families. He's always been a very good big brother and is willing to do anything to keep his sisters and younger brother safe. Because of the fact that the kids in the Irving household outnumber adults 3 to 1, Ian and his older sister Maisie do a lot of stuff around the house to help out. Completely out of their own free will mind you which means Ian is incredibly hard-working as well.

However, Ian is also a bit of a push-over, he can be very easily convinced into doing things with his school friends that maybe he shouldn't be doing. Really, the only thing he won't do is illegal activities. He's actually very firm on that.

2) What goals and objectives has your character set out in their life? Is it to be successful and rich? Is it to find happiness? Why?

He's 11. He hasn't really figured out what he wants to do with his life as of yet.

3) What's their ideal way of spending a free day? Why so?

Ian's ideal way of spending a day is hanging out with his family and friends doing whatever. Maybe it's at the beach relaxing, in their backyard hosting a party, whatever it is that brings his family and friends together is perfect for Ian.

4) If your character could only keep 5 possessions, what would they be? Why?

  1. His Grandfather's Dog Tags: His grandfather served in the Iraq War and did unfortunately die in said war. His father passed the dog tags onto Ian.
  2. His Locket: His older sister gave him a locket engraved with his initials on it for his 11th birthday. Inside was a picture of him and his whole family on one side and the other had a picture of Ian and his friends taken for him by Maisie.
  3. His Wand: While magic can be utterly frightening, it can also be very useful and if he wants to harness that power he needs a wand.
  4. His Watch: His grandmother gave it to him before she died in a car accident. Ian was very close to his grandmother and it's his only reminder of her.
  5. His Silver Ring: It was collective gift from Lindsey, Fiona and David (with the help of his mother) and he treasures it a great deal.

5) What one thing would your character change about the wizarding society? Why?

He'd blend the magical and muggle worlds more, because he's pretty sure that there's more muggle-borns out there that may not realize the kind of power they posses.

6) What house does your character want to be in? What house does your character not want to be in? Why?

Ian doesn't really care all that much, though his sisters have joked they'll disown him if he gets Slytherin so ideally not that house.

The Character's Background

1) Give a description of your character's personality. Are you noble or sneaky? Arrogant or Humble? Anything about your character that might help the Sorting Hat decide. (Don't worry, you can copy this onto your character page later!) (Remember, personality must be at least one paragraph long for the first two characters, two paragraphs long for the third to eighth characters, and three paragraphs long for the ninth to fifteenth!)

Ian’s defining characteristic is his ungodly patience. He almost never gets mad or irritated at anyone no matter what they do. Really the only thing that gets him riled up is when someone makes fun of one of his autistic siblings, and even then it’s like a quiet, controlled kind of anger, which can at times be scarier that getting mad and yelling. Ian’s also very good with kids younger than him or any kids that may be special needs. This is due to the fact that he grew up with three siblings who are autistic and he and Maisie effectively took care of some of their younger siblings while the adults cared for the kids with autism. It forced Ian to grow up very quickly which means he’s very mature and responsible for an 11-year old kid. Always completing his assignments on time and making sure all his ducks are in a row before he heads to bed every night. Ian’s very organized.

However, Ian is not perfect. He’s quite the pushover and can be very easily convinced into doing something. Nothing illegal, that seems to be the one line he’s drawn. He won’t break his parent’s very reasonable and relaxed rules nor would he ever dream of breaking the law. But anything beyond that he can probably be talked into doing with relative ease. I mean if it’s not in violation of any of that, it can’t be that bad right? Wrong. Ian could be talked into skydiving and probably will be when he gets older.

Ian is also not afraid of much and takes fear and panic in his stride, just pushing it off to deal with later. He does the same thing with stress, pushes it off to deal with later. Which usually involves a breakdown in private. Very few people know about these private little crying sessions Ian goes through, so few in fact that the number is one. His older sister Maisie is the only one who knows about them and Ian intends to keep it that way. He wants to keep a facade of strength so that people can feel that they can talk to him about anything and everything. Because, after all who would want to divulge their feelings of depression or other such matters to a person that can’t seem to handle it either? Ian wants to make sure people think that they can talk to him about this kind of stuff because he wants to make sure he’s always there for them.

2) Write about the history of your character. How did they grow up? Is there an incident that made them the way they are? etc. (Again, you can copy this onto your character page later!) (Remember, history must at least be two paragraphs long for the first two characters, three paragraphs long for the third to eighth character, and four paragraphs long for the ninth to fifteenth character!)

Ian Irving is the oldest son of Graham and Malina Irving, a lower class Scottish couple from the northern end of Scotland. In total the couple has 9 children, with two having died at birth. Ian has two older sisters and five younger ones, plus two younger brothers. The children are in order of birth as follows: Lindsey, Maisie, Ian, Fiona, Colin, David, Jean, Isobel and Kirstin. Graham and Malina met when Graham was attending an apprenticeship program to become a carpenter while Malina was still in school as she wanted to become a teacher. The pair started dating very soon after meeting and after Malina finished her A-Level qualifications, Graham proposed to her and the two were wed before Malina and Graham moved so that Malina could attend college to obtain a bachelor's degree in creative writing. Graham started worked as a carpenter to help pay for Malina's education and pay the bills.

Malina finished up her bachelor's degree and eventually moved onto graduate school to get her degree in education. At this point, the couple was 21 years old and still very much in love and well... Malina got pregnant. This forced her to stop her master's degree to become a full-time mom when she did give birth about nine months later. Their first child was a girl and her name was Lindsey Irving.

Being a mom turned out to be a full-time gig for Malina because Lindsey was by no means an easy child. She cried a lot and was overall just a very needy baby, she didn't make any other noises besides crying and refused to make eye contact with either parent but Malina and Graham overlooked that for the moment. Mostly because Malina got pregnant again. When Lindsey was about 18 months old, Malina gave birth to another baby girl named Maisie.

Lindsey wasn't getting any easier to handle, but Maisie... well Maisie was a very easy baby. She rarely cried, was usually pretty happy and just an easy-going baby. Meanwhile, Lindsey wouldn't respond to her name and wasn't progressing along the trend that kids her age should be. When she was about 2 1/2 years old, Malina and Graham took her to see a psychiatrist, where Lindsey was officially diagnosed with autism.

It was a bit of a shock to Malina and Graham, and was a bit frightening for them because Malina was once again pregnant and since autism seems to run in families... the new baby could have it, and Maisie could start to show signs at any time. It was a scary prospect for the young couple but one they were determined to overcome.

Six months later, the couple had their oldest and first son named Ian. Maisie still wasn't showing any signs of autism and she doted on her little brother, and Lindsey... well Lindsey wasn't getting any better. While Maisie loved her big sister, the feeling didn't seem to be reciprocated. It was challenging for Malina, especially since Graham had to be working all the time and they were having a hard time making ends meet. Malina, not knowing what else to do called her sister and asked her to move in with them. Malina's sister named Kenna, happily agreed to do so.

Kenna it turns out was great with Lindsey, which allowed for Malina to start writing her thoughts on motherhood and other such stuff down in a journal, which was really good for her mental health. Things were looking good, then when Ian was 20 months old, Malina got pregnant again. You'd think Graham and Malina would have started to use protection by this point, but apparently not. Anyways, Ian was about two and a half years old when Malina had yet another daughter named Fiona. Fiona was very similar to Lindsey which set both parents on edge. Luckily though, she seemed to connect with Ian. The two became very close despite the almost two and half year difference. Then, only three months after giving birth to Fiona, Malina got pregnant again. This women needed to look into birth control and Graham needed to learn what a condom was. Either way, about a year after Fiona was born, Malina had twin boys named Colin and David. You'd think that would've encouraged her to get on the pill, but no. Six months after the twins were born, Malina got pregnant once again. The normal amount of time followed, and Malina had another girl named Isobel. After Isobel, the couple did good for a while, and by a while I mean a year. When Isobel was about 20 months old, the couple had their last daughter named Kirstin, and the only reason it was the last was because Graham got a vasectomy after pregnancy number eight.

At the end of it all, three of the children were diagnosed with autism. Lindsey, Fiona who was diagnosed at 24 months and David, who was diagnosed at three years old. However, those three kids weren’t the only ones who were… odd. Strange things seemed to happen around all the kids, food they didn’t want to eat conveniently disappeared, chores magically happened all on their own (that didn’t usually happen with Ian or Maisie), but because of the chaotic nature of the Irving home, most of it was chocked up to pure coincidence or just ignored. That tends to happen when the ratio of kids to adults is 3:1, and especially if three of said kids are autistic.

Because Lindsey, Fiona and David required so much attention from Malina and Kenna, Graham was always working, it left Ian and Maisie to care for the other four kids in their family. Luckily for the Irvings, there really couldn’t be two better candidates for the job. Ian and Maisie were very good with their younger siblings, especially the ones with autism. Even if they didn’t really care for those three.

Anyways, on Lindsey’s 11th birthday a strange man arrived at their door. He was claiming that Lindsey was a witch and she needed to attend this magical school called Hogwarts. At first Kenna and Malina was going to turn them away but then Graham told them not to.Turns out Graham knew about this magical world, he had been born into it in fact. But he was moved to live with grandparents on his dad side when it turned out he didn’t have magical abilities. Graham was a squib.

Either way the explantation that Graham explained a lot. Turns out, magic can skip a generation and all the Irving kids were magical. Because Lindsey was the oldest, she would be the first to attend Hogwarts. Graham took her to Diagon Alley with a ministerial representative to buy her school things, and then on September 1, 2029, Lindsey was off to Hogwarts. Then two years later, it was Maisie’s turn and on September 1, 2031, Lindsey AND Maisie were off to Hogwarts. The year after that it would finally be Ian’s turn. Graham and the ministerial representative took Ian into Diagon Alley to get his stuff, just as the did for his sisters. Then on September the first, 2032, Ian, Maisie and Lindsey were all to Hogwarts.
