The Character's Background

1) Give a description of your character's personality. It must be at least two paragraphs long, seven sentences each.

Nathan's a brilliant, innovative, talented, and charming individual who could conquer the world if he really tried. Keyword tried. It's characteristic of him to put in zero effort into pretty much everything he does. He doesn't see the use in everyday tasks as well as just societal pressures in general, and as a result, doesn't really succumb to them. As a Selwyn, he's pretty much been a failure and a disappointment from the get-go. His manners (while actually impeccable) are never in effect because he never feels the need to be polite to anyone. His charisma is seemingly nonexistent (the matter of the fact is, he's extremely charismatic when he wants to be, which isn't often) and he's said to have a rather repulsive personality. Or maybe it's his lack of personality that's repulsive.

Nathan's in a constant state of apathy most of the time, with complete indifference towards everyone and everything. His opinions hardly differ from each other and usually are all passive and never actually meant. The fact of the matter is he just doesn't care. He can't really conceive any reasons to care about anything anymore so he doesn't. This makes a good amount of decisions based completely on a whim rather than a real desire or motivation to do them. It's very careless and reckless of him and he's highly aware of that, just chooses not to do anything about it because he finds it easier. If he does make an effort to do anything, it's all for efficiency. Essentially, anything that makes his life just the slightest bit easier and allows him to expend even less energy and effort, he did.

Of course, key to Selwyn nature, Nathan's not just smart, he's a literal genius. He could calculate a hundred digits of Pi in his head in less than five minutes but will he? No. Everyone wonders how the hell he even got into Ravenclaw because he seems to exhibit no Ravenclaw traits whatsoever. In fact, he's usually rumored as the dumbest Selwyn. If you've ever talked to him in real life, it's extremely evident just how intelligent he is. He's just terribly lazy and has no desire to share his innate knowledge with other people. He'd rather people believe he's dumb as shit then have people be disappointed in him for not using his intelligence for the greater good or some bullshit like that, as he would say.

After talking to awhile, it usually clicks in most people that Nathan's depressed. Terribly depressed, actually. At some point, he began wearing his depression as a second skin, feeling no need to hide it because he truly believes no one really cares. His disdain for himself is as almost as apparent as his laziness. His constant self-demeaning usually becomes either irritating for the people he talks to, concerning, or just makes them uncomfortable. He typically has that effect on people. It's kind of like his hobby really. He doesn't find amusement or enjoyment out of it but he does it often enough for it to be considered a hobby. He doesn't really have any hobbies, just things he does enough to be considered hobbies.

Really, the only thing Nathan finds happiness in is thin mints. Yeah, it sounds stupid. Girl Scout Cookies make him happy, but it's true. He's pretty much addicted to those things. His attachment to thin mints is verified as unhealthy but does he care? Nope. Truth be told, part of the reason why he's so attached to thin mints is because of what they symbolize for him. Thin mints are reminders of better, simpler times when he didn't have to force himself to get up every morning. Better times when everything didn't blur into each other. Better times when he wanted to do something with himself, with his life. Now, he kind of just lives in a stale, black and white picture of which he can't really figure out why he can't fill with color.

Nathan never has, never will be, and still isn't a people pleaser. He could never bring himself to be what people wanted before, so why should he try and do it now? As much as he hates it, he's used to disappointment and judgment and doesn't expect much less from people. While he hasn't become immune to it per se, he's learned to bury deep within his subconscious so he doesn't have to deal with it on an immediate level. Just in his dreams. Sometimes in panic attacks. Sometimes just random occurrences through the day that make him feel like shit for really no reason. He cries a lot. He doesn't make an effort to hide it, like everything he doesn't make an effort with. He doesn't like crying in front of people, but if he can't be bothered to hold it in, he does anyway. This is why it's usual for him to have water on him most of the time, to keep himself hydrated, which is ironic because he could hardly care about his own wellbeing.

Nathan has a lot of hidden passion for many different things, singing, drawing, playing the violin, swimming, reading, the list goes on and on. The problem is, at some point he just stopped enjoying doing these things. He used to be hyperactive and full of energy, always doing something but now he's kind of just living on the bare minimum of his existence. He doesn't know why he's lost enjoyment in the things he used to love to do, and it frustrates him. He doesn't like accepting people's help but won't fight back against it either. He can't be bothered to befriend people but doesn't mind when people befriend him. He doesn't know how to fix himself but wouldn't mind if someone did it for him. At some point, his whole persona just became him fighting against himself and he doesn't really know who's winning sometimes.

Being raised in a somewhat prejudiced pureblood family, you think he'd have more of an opinion on Muggle-borns and muggles in general. The truth of the matter is, he doesn't care. Sure, he typically thinks of them with disdain. He can't help it, old habits die hard, but he doesn't have a true opinion on them. He doesn't like them but he doesn't hate them. This serves him in two ways. It makes him neutral in the whole Purebloods v. Muggle situation, but also makes him do things like call muggleborns "mudbloods" without thinking about it. He swears it's never on purpose, but is he going to make an effort to stop? Probably not. Seeing all his siblings try to change their ways makes him kind of want to try too, but he really can't bring himself to care long enough to try.

Nathan's small. Very small actually, as well as incredibly soft. He acknowledges he's extremely emotional, and that the weather changing could literally affect his mood if he even bothered to check the weather. If there's one thing he cares about besides thin mints, it's people. He's highly empathetic and kind of just feels everyone's pain as if it was his own. This makes it easy to connect with really anyone, even if he's a little hard to get to talk to at first. He can always find something to relate to someone else, which makes him a very versatile person when it comes to social interaction, even though he sucks at initiating social interaction. It's not like he's shy or anything, he just doesn't know how to start conversations. He's not too talkative either but once you get him going, sometimes he just never stops.

Nathan has little to no self-confidence. Honestly, if you literally just said you liked the color of his eyes, he'd blush. He doesn't really think of himself in high esteem so whenever he receives compliments of any kind, he just of just combusts. It's cute really, also makes you terribly concerned for his home life because no one should ever be flustered that easily unless they've been starved of attention and proper care. He's also extremely awkward, which really accentuates how soft he is. He can't have a normal conversation to save a life. Anything he's involved in usually has a weird spin on it. He might be apathetic and lazy, but he's quirky enough to the point where it can be considered eccentric. He's pretty much just a tumblr shit post at 3 A.M., which is ironic because he typically shitposts at 3 am anyway.

2) Write about the history of your character. How did they grow up? Is there an incident that made them the way they are? It must be at least three paragraphs long, seven sentences each.

From a family whose blood was so pure they'd been included in the Sacred 28, Julius Selwyn had no reason or intention to sink to even looking at a muggle-born witch, and for 25 years of his life, he didn't. Until that was, he met the Japanese witch Kagome Hakumo.

Their relationship was unexpected, to say the least, but with Julius capable of causing serious damage to the family name his parents made the decision to refrain from disinheriting him with two conditions: Hakumo had to pretend to be pure-blooded, and she had to sign a prenuptial agreement. Both agreed to this, though Hakumo was a little concerned in regards to the prenup, and they were married a few months later when she became pregnant.

11 years and five children later, Julius got home early from his high-up ministry job to find his wife in bed with a man he'd never even met. The divorce was filed as soon as he could get it, citing his wife's adultery as the public reason for the divorce. Privately, he couldn't really care less - he'd fallen out of love with Hakumo years before and had been waiting for a good reason to divorce so he could marry his mistress, Kim Hae-Soo.

The prenuptial agreement saved the Selwyns' family fortune, but there was no such barrier to save Hakumo's reputation. The only thing that stopped her ex-husband from declaring her real blood status was his love of their children. Oh, and his regard for his family reputation.

It caused a stir in pureblood society when, only six months after divorcing his first wife, Julius Selwyn remarried, this time to a pureblood from South Korea, Kim Hae-Soo, who the general public believes he met a week after his divorce. That's not true - he had, in fact, been seeing her for years after meeting her at her fourth husband's funeral.

This wedding was remarkable not only because of its proximity to his divorce but also because of Hae-Soo's reputation in wizarding England: she'd had six husbands before marrying Julius (aged only 28), each richer than the last, and each had died in mysterious circumstances, leaving all their money to her. It helps that Hae-Soo is gorgeous - it's been speculated that there was a veela somewhere in her ancestry, but both she and her family deny this and there's no record of it, so we must conclude that she just got really lucky with her genes.

Cassius and his twin Calliope Selwyn were born a little more than a year after their parents' marriage, the youngest of their father's children and eldest of their mother's. They always suspected they were accidental on their mother's part, because in her six earlier marriages she'd never once gotten pregnant and she once told them, aged five, that children were a liability. It's not that their mother didn't love them - in fact, their fairly certain they're some of the only people she loves - it's just a fact. Cassius and Calliope Selwyn were a happy accident. As was their little brother and sister, Carlisle and Pandora.

Oh, and Nathan, but no one's too sure on the origins of his birth really. He was born supposedly in February of the following year, nine months after the twins but no one has any idea what he was real birthdate is. They kind of just pick a random day in February, go along with it if Haesoo tells them its Nathan's birthday, celebrate, and move on with their lives. Nathan, however, was really born in November. Haesoo spent a couple of days out by herself at a nature resort, claiming she needed time to herself to just relax. At this resort, a Siren colony was nearby, just three miles away in a large warm water lake.

When she found the lake, she visited it for the rest of her stay and came home pregnant with the child of a siren she'd never see again. Like she later did with Pandora, she somehow convinced her husband that this was their child despite how quickly she had gotten pregnant again after having the twins. It didn't matter though because Julius fell for it regardless. When she actually gave birth to him in November, she faked the following months of her pregnancy, not allowing Julius to see her when she supposedly delivered Nathaniel in February.

Truth is, he'd been alive and well for three and a half months. Julius hadn't been attentive enough to realize the infant was three months old instead of three days old when Haesoo finally brought him home after having a friend keep him. The twins weren't old enough to remember his exact birthdate, so no one questioned anything, and per usual, Haesoo got off clean, integrating Nathan into their family like he totally wasn't a half-Siren and accepting all the congratulations she got for having another beautiful, healthy baby.

Somehow, Julius managed to survive all the way through Nathan's childhood which was great, Nathan supposed, if he actually had a good relationship with him. Opposed to his mother who seemed to pretty much adore Nathan, he and his father were never on good terms for the whole eleven years Nathan knew him before he died. You can imagine that Nathan didn't spare too much remorse at the funeral. Besides that, Nathan's childhood was relatively spectacular.

Opposed to him now, he'd been a very cheerful and hyperactive child who had a desire to explore and discover. He wanted to see everything, do everything, be everything. To him, the sky was the limit, and as a young boy, he saw the potential in everything. It helped that no matter what he did, he seemed to have an affinity for it. He could literally pick up any hobby and in the span of a week have it down already. He was all over the manor, flying on a broom in the hallways, running through their expansive yard with a kite, rolling down hills and rollerskating to the ends of their driveway. It seemed he could never run out of energy, never stop doing things,

Trying to get him to go to sleep was a nightmare. Not only was he energetic, but he was also an absolute devil child. The servants would literally spend hours tryna to find him or catch him or even confirm that he was in the house. He was quite fond of pranks too, so he'd regularly bother his siblings, bother younger and older, planting elaborate tricks for his own amusement. Ever watched Home Alone? He's Kevin McCallister but multiplied by a thousand. He was cheeky and rude and pretty much caused absolute havoc in his wake.

His first sign of magic was due to a prank going wrong. He was nine and totally thought it'd be hilarious to coat his father's study in bubble gum, invisible, extremely sticky, magic-infused bubble gum. While he was covering one of the desks, one of his siblings, who had been looking for him to call him in for lunch, comes in and startles him so badly he falls into a trashcan which unfortunately had already been coated in the bubble gum substance.

He remained stuck in there for a whole half hour before he heard the footsteps of someone approaching the study again, in which he panicked, triggering his magical blood. The bubble gum became visible and pried itself from all the substances it had been attached to, coiling into a ball and shrinking. Nathan managed to get himself out of the trash can and disappear before anyone ever knew it was him. Besides Carlisle who startled him in the first place, but Nathan got him to shut up about it after some bargaining.

Nathan's first year in Hogwarts was the last year he'd ever truly experience what it was like to really be okay. Soon after the death of his father, a sudden case of depression hit him hard. Everyone believed it was due to Julius' death and he was sent to therapy soon after, but really it was just an offset of chemicals. They'd already been imbalanced long before his father's death, but starting puberty that year had slowly reversed the imbalance, leaving him destitute of happiness for what seemed like no reason. He remembers being in second year and trying to explain to the therapist that it wasn't anyone's fault but his own that he was depressed. In a way, he was right, but it was more due to his hormones than him.

He continued therapy for two years, but when it became evident that nothing, even the anti-depressants weren't working, Haesoo eventually chose to take him out of it, thinking he'd get better with just support from friends and family and a less artificial feeling environment. Nothing really happened. Some days it seemed like it had gotten much worse, and some days he seemed just fine. But eventually, he kind of just learned to co-exist with his depression, even if it was slowly tearing him apart on the inside.

3) Write about your character's appearance. What do they look like? Are you planning on using a certain model for your character? If you already have a picture in mind, you can put it here!

His model is Johnny Seo.

4) Is your character a Pure-Blood, Half-Blood or Muggle-Born? Do you have any notable magical relations? (Remember, you cannot be related to important characters from the Harry Potter Universe!)

Half-Blood, Selwyn family.

5) Does your character have any special abilities? Is he or she of a different magical race, such as Veela, Vampire, Werewolf or the like? Part or half of a magical race counts! (Remember, you cannot have a character with special abilities/of a different magical race as one of your first two characters!)

He's Half-Siren.

6) What year is your character in?

Sixth.

7) The Sorting Hat has been known to take house preference into consideration. If your character could select one house they believe they are best suited for, what would it be and why?

He really couldn't be bothered to care what house he's in, but before his depression, he definitely would've been a Ravenclaw. No doubt about it.
