The Character's Background

1) Give a description of your character's personality. It must be at least two paragraphs long, seven sentences each.

As someone who is half-banshee, there are certain things that are a given when it comes to Yue. Like, she can hear the dead sometimes, and if someone nearby dies, she just screams. It's great.

It really isn't. Yue doesn't mind her banshee blood, but sometimes...it's inconvenient. She avoids places where people are likely to die while she's there, namely hospitals but also prisons and, like, large sporting events. Plus in certain lights she apparently looks like a zombie, which really makes for some hilarious reactions.

For someone so close with death, Yue has a great sense of humor and loves to live life. She loves to try new things and meet new people--oh, she loves meeting new people. People, and the way they react to things, are so fascinating. She's willing to try just about anything at least once.

Yue really doesn't like to do things she isn't interested in, simply because she struggles to keep her mind from wandering and hates to be rude, but...some things are just so boring.

She loves to be up high--especially in trees. As a kid, if her parents couldn't find her anywhere, they quickly learned to look up. Yue has dreamed of living in a treehouse her entire life, and she's determined to make at least that dream come true.

Despite her easygoing nature, she gets nervous easily when there's pressure--public speaking and interviews and the like are a struggle for her, and she often has to spend some time psyching herself up before she can start.

She's not a slob, but she usually has to set aside a day every week or two just to clean her living space. When she gets caught up in her work, that's all that exists until she realizes she's starving, so she usually just tosses clothes down and kicks things out of her walkway for convenience.

Yue is a little obsessed with death. As a half-banshee, she can converse with the dead within a certain time frame, and she adores those conversations. Had becoming a muggle medical examiner not required spending time in a hospital, she would have done that. She has so many questions about death--what does it feel like? Is there a light? Is the grim reaper real? Is there any way to bring someone back? What happens after?--and she's determined to find answers.

2) Write about the history of your character. How did they grow up? Is there an incident that made them the way they are? It must be at least three paragraphs long, seven sentences each.

Yawen Hsu was a counseling coordinator for a disaster relief organization; her job was to help the affected population get the counseling they needed, be it psychological, legal, or financial, or a combination of the three. She often traveled to where the disaster was so she could better understand what was truly needed.

She was in Florida after the deadliest hurricane in years when she met Caoimhe O'Byrne, an...intriguing Irish woman with skin pale as a ghost, hair as red as blood, and dark eyes that always made her look like she'd been crying. Caoimhe, a banshee, had been living in the area for some time, working as a mortician, until her home and shop were destroyed. Over the weeks Yawen stayed in the area to help coordinate, she and Caoimhe became friends. After learning Yawen lived in Boston, Caoimhe decided that sounded like a fine city to move to, and Yawen was more than happy to help her get settled in and show her around the city.

Their relationship quickly became romantic, and within the year Yawen proposed. On the morning of their wedding, Caoimhe finally told Yawen she was a banshee, but Yawen had already figured it out, and they were married later that day. The next year, they decided to have a child, and through modern magical means, Caoimhe was able to carry a child that was part of both of them.

Yue Daiyu O'Byrne was born seconds after midnight on the first of January, 2013--the first baby of the year at that hospital. When the healer in charge realized the child was half-banshee, he recommended that they go home as soon as possible, just in case anyone in the hospital died and happened to trigger a scream. Thankfully Yue was healthy and strong and the birth had been fairly easy, and the small family was able to go home not much later.

Her parents sent her to a private school outside the city where they hoped she would be far enough away from people likely to die that she would be able to study in peace. They were all lucky that nothing ever triggered a scream while she was at no-maj school--that would have been difficult to explain.

However, living in a densely populated city, Yue was no stranger to screaming or the overwhelming need to hibernate afterward. Her moms made sure she was aware of what she was and what to expect from a young age, so it wasn't a surprise.

Her first sign of magic--besides her banshee "powers"--showed when she was nine. She was making pancakes in the kitchen with Yawen when their next door neighbor, an elderly man named Dante, passed away, and after her scream that day she was especially tired and didn't want to have to wait to go to sleep to recharge, so she made grabby hands at the couch pillows, which promptly flew into the kitchen, making quite the mess.

Yue's first wand was bundimun fang and aspen, and she loved it very much. At Ilvermorny, she was chosen by Wampus and Horned Serpent, but she chose Horned Serpent, which ultimately turned out to be the better choice. She was much more interested in learning than she was in fighting. She did well in all her classes, especially magical theory and healing, and she played quodpot as well, rising to be team captain for her final two years.

Yue had to go to the hospital when she was 14 for the influenza outbreak that year, and several people died within a very short period of time. One scream is draining enough for her and usually has her out for a few hours, but so many so close together almost killed her. She hates the screams whenever they happen because she can't stop them, and the experience of being unable to stop the screams as she began to feel overwhelmingly tired was absolutely terrifying. According to her mom, she didn't even move for a week and a half, and she was still fast asleep for three more days. She felt awful when she did finally wake up, but at least she wasn't sick sick anymore. Her wand, however, had not fared quite as well. She'd kept it in her back pocket, and when she passed out she landed on it at just the right angle to snap it. Before school started back, she had to get a new wand, and the wand that chose her had a lethifold tooth core.

Because of that same event, Yue avoids hospitals at all costs.

After graduating, Yue went right to muggle university, wanting to study psychology, especially as it relates to how people deal with life and death. She didn't take summer breaks while working toward her PhD; she chose to take courses year-round not only to earn her degree faster, but also because she just enjoyed what she was studying. While in University she also worked part-time as an intern and later as an assistant for the local auror division's coroner. She had the opportunity to work with the medical examiner at the hospital, but she passed it up because of her aversion to hospitals.

Her doctoral thesis was on the psychology of death, focusing on the way communities react to tragedy. She passed with flying colors, and even in the magical world she politely corrects people to Doctor O'Byrne when they call her miss.

It's been her lifelong dream to work in the death chamber at the British ministry--she doesn't know all that much about it due to the secrecy around it all, but from what little she does know, she knows they're ahead of the States and her chances of figuring out death are much better in Britain than in the US.

MoM Yue O'Byrne has been registered as a citizen by the British Ministry of Magic!

"Upon the signature of the International Statute of Secrecy in 1689, wizards went into hiding for good. It was natural, perhaps, that they formed their own small communities within a community."
