One thing you'll quickly learn about Freddie Lovelace is that he wears his heart on his sleeve. It takes about six seconds of solid conversation with him to ensure he's in love with you for at least the next two weeks, and he's always convinced his current love is the one. And he's not a coward - he'll more than likely make a move. Then get rejected, recover in an hour and be on to the next love of his life. Call him what you want, but you can't deny his ability to bounce back.
Freddie's upbringing has given him a sense of quiet confidence that he carries with him everywhere. He's so used to being the strong one that he's become a master of hiding the weight he himself carries, and is generally known as the carefree, attentive boy who's friends with almost everyone he meets. He's the one who opens his bed-curtains when one of his dormmates has a nightmare, and the one to draw outsiders into his conversations. It's not hard to like Freddie Lovelace - half the time he can tell what you're going to say before you say it. He's just kinda like that.
Gryffindor is definitely where Freddie belongs. He never quite lost that reckless disregard for his own safety that so defined him as a child, much as he became a very responsible older brother after his mother's diagnosis. He'd probably be voted most likely to get his head crushed trying to climb the whomping willow if Hogwarts had a yearbook, and he's certainly not someone to back down from a dare.
History
Born in London to a second-generation Ethiopian migrant and a pure-blooded squib who'd been cast out of his family at the tender age of eleven, Freddie's early childhood was fairly unremarkable. He went to school, took part in various clubs, and came home every evening to his family's boring terraced house. No, the exciting part of his childhood was always the trouble he'd get up to with his friends - running up and down the street like his shoes were on fire and falling out of trees so often he managed to break his arm three times before the age of eight. Freddie Lovelace lived to give his mother heart attacks.
Life continued on in this vein for the first five years of Freddie's life, with the addition of twin younger siblings when he had just turned three, until his mother decided to pay a visit to the GP. She'd been having problems with her sight and with her balance, you see, and was often tired. A few weeks later came the diagnosis: she had multiple sclerosis.
With their mother deteriorating fairly quickly, Fleur stepped up to help her father with her younger siblings and her mother. The family didn't have enough money to hire childminders or private nurses, you see, and the NHS wasn't really able to spare the staff to give the little family much extra support - though the occasional visit from the district nurse was still a great help to them. While Fleur became a carer, her father picked up a third job in order to compensate for the lost income.
Freddie, while not expected to look after the younger siblings (being one of them), still went through primary school with cheaper clothing and a lack of extracurricular clubs due to his struggling parents. His mother's benefits didn't match up to her former salary as an architect, you see. He didn't mind, though, contenting himself with running wild with his friends in the afternoons instead.
When Fleur, Freddie's older sister, went to Hogwarts, the family struggled even more. As soon as he was old enough he was doing some of the same things that Fleur had handled when she was at home. And then he got his own Hogwarts letter.
