Ant decided to fake sick a couple days ago and cut most of his classes the past three days. He just hasn't really been in the mood to do anything but wallow, which he knows is pathetic, but at the same time whenever he tries hanging out with his friends they always just end up asking him if he's okay. It's as if his very aura is a bit sadder than usual, but he's up and running again because he knows he can't miss too many lessons. That and, he doesn't want anyone getting suspicious. He feels like he's capable of functioning normally, again. He's gotten through most of the day and no one's commented on anything, but he's a bit anxious for Charms because Mitzi of all people is his partner, and she tends to read him well. He settles into his seat next to her, right on time, though it seems that today they'll just be practicing some spells. He would've preferred a lecture. At least they wouldn't have to talk as much that way. "Hey," he says.

Marisha arrives shortly after Ant does— only the slightest bit behind when she usually does as a result of a visit she had to pay Professor Van der Hoek. "Hey! It's nice seeing you." She smiles as she sits, pulling her wand out of her pocket and sliding it onto the table they share. It's impossible to not notice how absent he has been in all of their classes and there's been a noticeable emptiness in the common room at night. It isn't as if Marisha would pester him until he pulls his earbuds out like she would have last year, but she still looks for him. "Are you feeling better? I heard you had a bug." Her voice oozes with concern, but she doesn't make a point of pouting or seeming more visibly upset by this. She is worried. It seemed to have been set off around his birthday since he never responded to her wishes, which she's sort of used to from other people and wasn't too bothered by. She was just concerned— is concerned.

"Uh, yeah." he says in response to her comment about having caught something. It's better to be vague, he thinks, and not lie any more than he needs to. Ant is not very good at that sort of thing, or at the very least not when he's like this, suffering from sleepless nights and the whiplash of finding out about his mother. "I'm feeling better now, yes." he adds. He clears his throat, feeling a bit awkward. It had already been awkward interacting with Mitzi ever since school started after the fiasco at Max's party, but now it feels infinitely worse. "Did I miss a lot while I was gone?"

It isn't that things have somehow healed for Marisha, but she has been forced to move on from plenty of hurt without resolution. It's second nature to pretend she is fine when it is as limited as this. Besides, she values his well-being regardless of her feelings and she is fine with prioritizing it even if she remains upset by the events of the summer. "We tried some nonverbal charms, so a little bit. We should be practicing the water-making and drought charms," she tells him, pointing to the small basin sitting at the front of their table. Mitzi reaches out to stabilize her wand, which was set to roll down said table, before turning up to her old friend and smiling slightly. "It should be easy!" She rarely struggles to sound light and happy, but her voice hitches on something in her throat when she tries and the words come out with a more unimpressed tone— something extremely uncommon for her.

Ant notices the slight hitch in her voice and almost winces. He still feels bad after what happened during the summer, but also it's been so long that he feels like an apology would almost be offensive at this point. "Yeah, it should be." he replies, taking his wand but waiting for Mitzi to go first out of courtesy. It feels weird sitting in silence, so even if he knows that he probably shouldn't be distracting her while she's trying to practice her nonverbal magic (not that he thinks it will matter much; he's seen Mitzi in class before and she is a talented witch), he tries making light conversation. "How have you been lately?" he asks, feeling uneasy. "We, uh, haven't been able to catch up in a while. Did you have a good rosh?"

Marisha fiddles with her wand, eyeing him to see if he will go first. When he doesn't, she reaches out her wand and points it at the bowl, silently conjuring up a pool of water. She must have been picturing too much water though as the water reaches the very brim of the bowl, teasing the edge. She jumps slightly at the realization it might spill, but it doesn't and a relieved smile comes upon her face. "It was fine. There isn't a lot we can do from Hogwarts. Sukkot is in a little bit, which should be interesting. It will be my first Sukkot not in Israel— and it's much warmer there," she explains absentmindedly. It's noticeably surface level, but she isn't uninterested in the matter either. "Everything has been quiet lately— and easy." Mitzi drains the bowl of almost every ounce of water except for the smallest drop at the bottom and frowns before doing the spell a second time to get all of it. "Besides your illness, how have you been feeling?" she asks, turning up to stare at him while he gives his response. Her eyes show genuine curiosity even if the dialogue between them feels stale and distant.

Ant vanishes the water in the bowl with a quick Evanesco, then attempts the nonverbal spell himself. "I'm okay," he lies, before aiming his wand at the bowl and focusing on the spell. Mitzi made it look so easy, so it probably shouldn't be too hard, but instead of water, a couple sparks fly out of the tip of his wand (nothing too serious) and smoke begins to emanate from the tip. "What the..." He bites his tongue to keep himself from cursing; it's not like he curses very much to begin with, but from what he remember it isn't something Mitzi is very fond of. "Wait, give me a second." he says. This time he closes his eyes to envision the water, then opens his eyes and focuses on the bowl, but barely any water sputters out from his wand like a broken faucet. "When is Sukkot again?" he asks, trying to make sure it looks like he's actively interested in the conversation. He is, in fairness, but his mind is elsewhere. "You can practice more, if you like, though." Not that she needs it. "My wand has been acting so oddly lately, I'll probably get a new one this weekend, so it seems kind of pointless for me to keep trying."

Mitzi jumps again when sparks go flying from his wand and can you honestly blame her? Her eyes widen, but his expression becomes more solemn when he tries again and water dribbles out the end in a rather depressing fashion. "It starts the evening of the fourteenth," she tells him, but it's muted and quiet from the way she starts nibbling at the inside of her cheek. Her eyes are trained on his wand for a moment before holding her hand out for it. "Maybe you should. Wands die all of the time," which might be a lie. She isn't certain, but from her limited knowledge of wands and their initial creation and usage, she can gather that they do probably die often at the hands of teenagers. So much growth happens between when one first acquires their wand and when they reach adulthood and the darn things are so persnickety that it seems natural. And besides, she doesn't want him to feel too bad. "What is it?" It isn't as if Marisha knows a lot about wands, but as the owner of a unicorn hair wand herself, she is curious if his is the same. They often die during their owner's bouts of sadness.

He makes a mental note of when Sukkot is so that he can send her a quick text on that day too. He hands her his wand when he sees her extend his hand; Ant doesn't know very much about wandlore but he does know that a person can go through as many as a dozen in a lifetime because nobody stays the same person they were at eleven forever. "Hm?" he asks, before realizing that she's asking if something has happened with him. He feels a bit nervous – is he that easy to read? Or does Mitzi just know him that well? "Oh, it's nothing." he reassures her, "Just family stuff." he says and leaves it at that. It's not even scratching the surface of what's bothering him, but every once in a while he and Max do fall out for a day or two over something dumb, so at least she can assume that's what it is.

His response cues a glance to the students near them, who are all focusing on their spells. His information doesn't have to be out there and she knows he's sensitive to it especially with his brothers. "I understand. I hope things get better for you soon," she answers quietly, forcing a poignant smile as she turns down towards his wand. Marisha does understand family problems, but she can't say with great confidence that she knows what he is going through. It isn't time to prod either because as she noted earlier, she shouldn't let his business be aired and she doesn't want to cause a scene. "I- Um," she stops, second guessing her decision to say such things. "Which core do you have? Unicorn hairs are so persnickety. Mine died in August and I had to get it replaced at O- Ollivander's, is it?" Her confidence visibly wavers at trying to pronounce the name, but her expression returns to normal as she sets his wand down in front of him.

"Unicorn hair," he confirms, nodding. He has heard it before that those kinds of wands tend to be a bit fickle when their owners aren't feeling their best. "August?" he echoes, trying to place what might've happened around then. When he realizes, his face falls, but he quickly regains his old expression and decides to shift the topic before they have to talk about what happened back then. Now isn't the best time to apologize, Ant thinks, in the middle of Charms class. Besides, it's been so long since then and she's still talking to him like normal, so could it really be that bad? "Yeah, I'll probably go to Hogsmeade this weekend like I mentioned." he says, "Do you want to come with?" Ant doesn't know what prompted him to offer, but he feels awkward not having spent time together in so long. "We haven't hung out outside of class very much lately."

His confusion doesn't offend her although she supposes she should be more upset with the thought that he could have possibly forgotten, but he obviously hasn't by his immediate change in demeanor. Sometimes your mouth moves ahead of your mind and she doesn't fault him for it. At his offer, her expression brightens and she smiles, eyes pleading with hope. "You should! I think that would be smart. I-" Mitzi grins and her face scrunches up as she balls up her fists and shakes them in her own excitement. An apology would be nice before being given this sort of olive branch, but he's right that she wouldn't want an apology in the middle of Charms class. Besides, she has had to move on from plenty of problems without apologies. It hurts a bit more trying to do that with someone she cherishes as much as she does Ant, but she supposes it isn't good to hold him to a higher standard. Her standards are generally low and somewhere along her upbringing she was convinced that was a good thing. It's the polite thing. "I would love to! I think that could be nice. I think we have a lot to talk about." Mitzi adds the last part to ensure she will mention it eventually.

Ant tries not to sound too relieved when she accepts his offer or look too excited. Talking too animatedly in the middle of class might lead people to think that the two of them are an item, and though he isn't sure what's going on with her and Rhys anymore, it's still not something he would want people to assume. "Great!" he answers, trying to sound as cool and relaxed about it as possible. "I'll text you about it again later." He's glad that he has another excuse to message her; hopefully he will be able to come up with more to talk about so that the conversation doesn't awkwardly die out like most do between the two of them. Now that he thinks about it, hopefully spending the day together won't be too awkward either. At the mention of talking about 'a lot', he feels his heart drop a little bit. "I'm glad you're not too busy to hang out. I thought you'd be too busy, given your prefect stuff and chess club."

Mitzi grins and beats her hands on the edge of the table before turning her focus towards the basin again. Sakellarios of all professors being upset with her for not actually focusing would be absolutely disastrous to her. "Saturdays are my rest days. Always have been," she tells him, going quiet for a moment as she fills the bowl without any risk of spilling this time. Maybe her better mood contributes to that. She turns to him, lifting her brows beneath her fringe and smiling as if to show off to him before she resumes her usual kind smile. "Unless you are too busy, we can go on Saturday then, but my schedule on Sunday is busier." Since she spends one day practicing rest, the other six tend to be rather hectic and it is hard to deny that especially with her more complicated and certainly heftier workload. "Maybe we can get food while we're out or something." Mitzi focuses on the bowl again before draining it. Once again, it leaves a small pool at the bottom and she frowns.

Ant bites his tongue to keep himself from saying anything that might ruin the good mood. He doesn't want anyone to see him with Mitzi in Hogsmeade and assume things, but is his reputation really more important than their friendship? Mitzi is more important, of course, he decides on. The fact he even hesitated brings a sick feeling to his stomach and a small light begins blinking at the tip of his wand to reflect his emotional turmoil. Noticing this, he rolls his eyes and holds it again to stop it. "We should." he agrees, nodding. "And I am free on Saturday. It's good to hear that you manage to find time to rest even with all your responsibilities."

She laughs, pushing her hair behind her ears before stretching her hands out over her knees. Hopefully the pressure of which will prevent her from starting to bounce her legs. "It's an old habit from home. Saturday is Shabbat and my parents were very serious about it," she tells him, glancing down when she does so. Explaining it has always given her a little bit of anxiety and while she wouldn't claim to have any worry over telling someone now, she still struggles. It feels so contrary to her goals and ambitions to spend her time that way, but she knows it is with good purpose and that realistically it is important whether she is Jewish or not. "I don't take it as seriously anymore. A lot of people don't, but my parents were very strict." Marisha's parents to this day don't drive their car on Saturdays nor do they manage the house or make food. They're rather conservative and even she has found that she can be more liberal with it. "It has its positives though— an excuse from studying is a big one," she says before giggling. It isn't often that she makes comments that would insinuate studying is boring, but it sort of is.

Ant has always known that Marisha's parents were strict but never really grasped just how scared she was of disappointing them until what happened last August – he just supposed that her parents were just another case of parents being a bit overbearing, but he's glad he has this understanding now so he can be more sensitive about it in the future. Hopefully, though, since Marisha feels comfortable being a little more liberal, it means she didn't get in too much trouble after the whole thing at Max's party. This rationalization assuages his guilt just a little bit – just a little. "Not being able to do practically anything one day of the week is kind of extreme." he says, hoping he doesn't offend. "But I'm glad you're using it as a day to rest. You shouldn't spread yourself too thin." Ant takes the opportunity to practice the nonverbal spell and manages to fill up just half the bowl and he lets out a small sigh, equal parts relief that his wand managed to do something and frustration that it still isn't enough.

His comment does offend her a little, but not enough for her to vocalize it. Mitzi is often defensive over her religion and rightfully so. It was nicer living in Israel and having to explain less. "It's nice," she responds quietly, smiling shyly as she turns towards the table to watch him practice. Her smile widens and eyebrows shoot towards the top of her face when he fills the basin, instinctively starting to reach a hand out for a congratulatory high five and withdrawing her hand into her lap before she can actually hold it out. She wedges her hands in between her lower thighs instead. "Aw, your wand is working. Good job!" Her satisfaction is clear and she whips around to see how the others are doing. It appears the others are doing a pretty decent job, but she still thinks they're ahead of the game. "You should try again," she suggests, gesturing towards the bowl before folding her hands between her legs again.
