Greenhouses and Gardens

Professor Sprout greenhouse 1

The roots and shoots that abound here bear plentiful witness to the enduring legacy of Helga Hufflepuff in Hogwarts. Here in the various greenhouses are cultivated all the exotic plants and plant-based lifeforms which students examine and explore in Herbology. You can find Professor Coryn's office here. The gardens amply supply the kitchens, and in turn tables, of the school, whilst also providing a pleasant backdrop for a casual stroll on a warm evening.

Beware the next Greenhouse over, which is full of the dangerous plants.

Unable to tear herself away from the array of plants here, Katelynn strolls up and down the greenhouse, concentrating all her effort on not letting her powers escape her. Curious, she approaches one of the more dangerous-looking plants, avoiding its spikes and gently brushing a purple leaf.

The sudden voice scares her and, terrified that it's a prefect, Katelynn jumps back and freezes at the sight of the boy. The shock also kicks her powers into action, and, before she can stop it, the pot in which the purple-leafed plant blooms shatters into several pieces. "S-sorry!"

She cringes at the broken pot, and lifts her hand to see if she can rearrange the pieces but stops when she realises there's no way she can trust herself to not ruin things further. Feeling a tinge creep into her cheeks, she tucks her hands into the sleeves of her jumper and look over to the boy. "I-I did get caught. You c-caught me," she points out, her nervous tone betraying any sarcasm.

She looks back to the pot, feeling more embarrassed by the second. "D-do you know any fixing spells?" she asks, flicking through her own mental spellbook to see if she can remember any.

"Erm..." she racks her brains when suddenly the lightbulb shines. "R-re-" she pauses, sighing at her stutter. "Reparo!" The pieces of pottery begin to rearrange themselves, seamlessly bonding together. "T-there we go."

The question makes her cower a little, but she does her best to demonstrate the spell. "I j-just waved my w-wand and said it," she replies, looking up at him (he's exceptionally taller than her). "You have to wave it in a t-triangle shape."

She peers at him curiously - is she the only person who can make spells work the first time? - before shaking her head carefully. "N-no, I've just read the spell. Why, d-do you... do you struggle with magic?" She says it kindly, paranoid about offending him.

Realising she might have upset him, she reaches out to give him a reassuring pat on the arm, but her shyness makes it a little awkward. Plus she's scared that her powers might come loose and break his arm or something. "I don't think it's m-meant to be that easy a-at all. I think I'm just pr-precocious."

She considers his words, and finds herself agreeing somewhat. "W-we should switch places. I h-hate magic," she says, folding her arms securely across her chest. "It's not s-supposed to be easy, d-don't get dis-discouraged."

"I just do," she shrugs gently. "The m-muggle world looks so much easier. T-there's no need to worry about s-spells going wrong and hurting people."

"I-I know," she nods. "But t-they have doctors and operations and medicines in the muggle world. Y-you can't m-mess up a healing spell and make everything worse."

She nods in agreement, the corner of her lips curling up in a small smile. "I s-suppose," she says, before there's a sudden crack and the plant pot shatters again, surrounded by a blue aura. The noise makes her jump, breaking another pot, and she lets out a grunt of anger.

She whips out her wand and performs a frustrated Reparo, setting the pieces of crockery back into place. "What's the p-point? I break things everything I g-go," she sighs.
