While Hailey has, over time, lost that crisp naivety instilled in the youth, her curiosity and thirst for adventure continues to wage on furiously. She wouldn't necessarily go to extreme lengths to quench that inquisitiveness, but she is willing to try things she hasn't before, so long as it is something she can realistically achieve. This does often lead to decisions made on a whim, but that’s not to say she’s reckless and willing to risk meaningful things like her family and employment. She does think things through before she acts on different impulses; she just has a much smaller window to do so. It has had its drawbacks, like when she lost her job standing up to Fitzgerald, but it has also had its advantages, like her successful stint as a travel vlogger on Youtube. Having all these kinds of experiences has made Hailey very flexible and open-minded, hence why you might find her… not as organized as other people. She’s very all over the place, sure, but it’s the kind of environment she’s gotten used to. Her old job was based extensively on trial and error, and her time as a vlogger never dictated she adhered to a strict schedule. Her mind is just as chaotic as her surroundings, mostly because it’s filled with so many creative ideas she’d like to put into play, and it comes with a highly active imagination. With that in mind, something worth noting is that Hailey is very receptive to teamwork; oftentimes, she prefers it to working alone. She's always been very extroverted and dependent of social interactions. That's not to say she doesn't produce respectable work on her own, but it's certainly where her preferences lie.
Do you believe in fairytales? The kind where boy meets girl, girl falls in love with boy, girl and boy’s families are staunchly against their budding romance, boy and girl fight the odds, and they lived happily ever after? If you answered no, then perhaps this story will change your mind. You see, there once was this boy named Stefan Johnston. One could argue he was being set up for greatness, to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and pursue a respectable career within the British Army. His grandfather had taken part in the D-Day invasion in Normandy during World War II, and every Johnston man after him was expected to be willing to make the same kind of sacrifice. Stefan’s entire upbringing revolved around the service his family was sworn to fulfill. He knew, however, that wasn’t the kind of life he wanted to have. Stefan longed for an idyllic life far away from the chaos that defined London. Settling down in the countryside was all he wanted. Close enough that he could run his own business successfully, but far away enough that he could find himself a wife and raise children without the headaches of constant familial judgment. Who knows, perhaps he could even own a dog. As long as he was able to live a life that was unequivocally him, where he could give his kids the liberty to be whoever they wanted to be, then he would be happy. But alas, his own parents were very forceful and vindictive. It was their way or no way, and Stefan couldn’t risk angering them enough that they’d kick him out or do something similar to that vein. Thus, he did as well as he could in his GCSEs before promptly enlisting, believing he could pursue a degree once he’d begun to serve his time. If he was able to play his cards right, he’d earn a degree around the time his first contract with the Army was up.
Sadly, the Johnston family wasn’t known for being understanding and merciful. When they found out, just months shy of the end of his contract, they made it abundantly clear they would not support a son who bore no interest to give back to his country. Perhaps Stefan could have argued a case for himself, but he found there to be no point. His parents wouldn’t give it a rest until he did as told. Adult or not, they still paid for everything he owned, supplementing the meager salary he was earning for his work. They were his lifeline. So again, he swallowed his pride and suppressed his desires, and found himself extending his contract. This continued long after Stefan’s hope began to dwindle, and it wasn’t until nearly his early 30s that he caught a breath of fresh air. Aforementioned breath of fresh air came in the form of a beautiful, sought-after midwife living in the countryside who had come into town to assist his sister in her pregnancy; someone who he saw once and simply couldn’t get out of his head. Now, after many years, he likes to look back on that day and mention how it had been love at first sight. Darcie Morrison had always meant to be his, so long as he was able to find his way back to her - something he also claims to this day that he’ll always be capable of doing. The admiration he held for her was so magnificent that when he approached her in an effort to flirt with her - pained, pregnant sister aside - he just couldn’t utter a word. His embarrassment was noticeable and Darcie still mocks him over it to this day, but he doesn’t care. In the end, he got the girl, and from that first kiss in the middle of a raging storm grew a love so fierce nothing could break them apart.
For a while, Stefan’s parents were resistant to the idea of their younger son marrying some midwife who likely had no future. Had she been a nurse for the Armed Forces, perhaps they might have been more receptive to the idea, but Stefan was quick to realize his parents would never be able to look past their arrogance long enough to care about his happiness. So bearing that in mind, he and Darcie made the impulsive decision to get married, just a few short months after meeting. Stefan began to untangle himself from his family, until he reached the point where he simply avoided speaking to them as he could. Most communication between them ceased, until all he had was Darcie, her family, and his brother and sister. They were all he needed, he knew, and that knowledge brought him the peace he never realized he needed. Just in time, no less, because as it were, he and his wife were expecting their firstborn child. Some nine months later, they were meeting for the very first time a 7.4-pounds baby with big, brown eyes and a small tuft of blonde hair on her head. Hailey Cordelia Darcie Johnston was every bit her Morrison grandmother, and it was a welcomed sight, even if it meant she looked nothing like her actual parents. Two years after Hailey came Teddy, and Grace followed five years later. Everything he had dreamed for himself was becoming a reality, but there was still one important thing he had to do: leave his hectic past behind and live out a more rustic one. He had his wife’s support, and really, it was all he needed. Thus, Hailey was raised in a wholly different environment than her father was.
Where he was forced into a strict routine that involved extensive focus on academics and physical exercising, Hailey was able to fulfill all her personal goals and pursue every interest and passion she had growing up. Truth be told, she never wanted or needed more than she had. If you ask anyone who knew her as a child, you’ll likely receive an overwhelming amount of praises. She was an easy child to raise, and even easier to love by those she wasn’t related to. She loved spending her time at the town library, reading up on different mythologies and cultures around the world. When she wasn’t there, she was volunteering at different elderly homes, playing table games and making sure there was a smile on everyone’s faces. She was a happy kid with an insatiable thirst for knowledge and adventure that to this day, she still hasn’t fully quenched. Paired with these interests comes her craftiness; Hailey has always enjoyed getting her hands dirty and making beautiful sculptures out of the most mundane things. There was one point in time where Hailey was absolutely obsessed with aeroplanes and everything that involved the sky, to the point her father - ever a Star Wars fanatic - began calling her Poe. Her head was always in the clouds with her mind on the stars that peppered the universe. Hailey underwent many phases in her life (which included, sadly, an emo phase, though it thankfully was a very short one), but to this day, one thing she still likes doing is going up to the roof and watching the night sky. She might not want to be an astronaut or a pilot anymore, but it doesn’t make her any less of a curious soul, wondering just what might be out there.
It never really occurred to Hailey that she might not necessarily be as normal as her classmates until she was almost 10. She never experienced any emotions that could be defined as negative enough to warrant explosive demonstrations of magic, which posed a problem when it came to activating her magical gene. Even when her magic did manifest, it was triggered by an overwhelmingly happy experience; going to Disneyland Paris for the first time. That day, guests truly witnessed magic in its raw glory. Not that they’d ever have the chance to know, because the Parisian Ministry was quick to react to that small outburst. However “insignificant” you might consider a hovering child, it was a great infraction on the Statue of Secrecy. Those who witnessed the event were obliviated and the Johnston family’s vacation was abruptly cut short so the Ministry could deliver that iconic Your daughter is a witch! And no, we’re not crazy! speech. At first, Stefan was incredulous. He refused to believe it was real, and was adamant they be excused, as he was sure they were just trying to pull his leg. What he didn’t know was that the Morrison lineage did have magic. It wasn’t until he saw his wife’s guilty and nervous look that he truly began to understand that yes, this was all real. He truly did have a magical child, and his other children might be, too. The conversations were long and arduous, but Darcie’s marriage persevered and it was quickly decided Hailey would be attending Hogwarts once her letter arrived.
Come age 11, Hailey was on her journey to Hogwarts. She was excited, naturally, by the prospect of learning how to practice magic. But she was nervous, too, and it presented problems when she got to Hogwarts. She was one of the few muggle-borns in her year, and that brought worries of not being enough. She was lucky she had her parents’ endless support, because without it, she might not have been so fast to find her pacing at Hogwarts. As a matter of fact, she did so well, by the time she started her third year, she already knew what she wanted to do with her life. Charms was her best class, and there was no career more appealing than being able to create her own spells. She had her sights set on the Committee on Experimental Charms. She worked hard, becoming prefect in her sixth and seventh years, and later went on to find employment at the Ministry in the committee. However, all good things had to come to an end. She was just barely 22 when Alistair came into power, and 24 when she lost her job. Alistair, for all his interest in men, had been led to believe he could manipulate pretty little Hailey Johnston into creating atrocious spells that would certainly lead to mass casualties in the United Kingdom. She stood her ground, though. She wasn’t interested in being an accomplice to all his crimes. She couldn’t stomach the thought of everything he was doing, and it just so happened to be her luck that she was terminated. She might have been killed had it not been for her quick thinking. She secured an illegal portkey that left her wounded in the middle of her childhood home. She very nearly succumbed to her splinch, but luckily all that’s left of that accident is a deep scar on her right shoulder blade.
Hailey made the best of the first few weeks as a new muggle working at the library she was so fond of growing up. It didn’t pay much, but she’d gone back to her family’s house, allowing her to work there while she thought of a new plan. She couldn’t go back, that much was for sure - not until Alistair was killed or locked away, anyways. So she looked ahead and focused on what could come from her interests: traveling, exploring, learning. Then it hit her. Youtube. She fell back on the platform and generated content as she traveled. Not only was she doing something she was passionate about, but she was actually getting paid for it. Exploring nature, talking about mythologies and cultures - it was a beautiful dream. Honestly, she could’ve done that for the rest of her life, but then news of Alistair’s demise reached her and she knew she had to return. She had to help in the ways she could, to restore her country’s peace. She might be part-muggle, but she couldn’t shy away from her responsibilities as a witch. So... she's back. Maybe something good will come from this.
