The Head of Hufflepuff's office is bright and full of nature sunlight that peaks through skylights in the ceiling. Ground and moss have grown over the tops of this partical part of thr Hufflepuff basement and the entire room is decorated in plants and flowers of different varities.

Just beyond the office is a small tunmel that leads to a bed chamber designated to the Head of House while theybteach at Hogwarts. It's equally as bright and has a few more skylights that are spelled so that students can't see inside from the grounds. The current Head of House is Juliette Van der Hoek.

Lena sat anxiously in her wife's office, left leg crossed over her right, fiddling anxiously with the zip of her jacket (it's a tic she's picked up, to help her cope with the uncertainty of rebuilding the relations she had pre-disappearance.) What if her daughter held any resentment for her vanishing, even if it wasn't Lena's fault? Iliana didn't seem like she would, but then again, what would she know? Lena knew better than anyone how four years could change a person — she was certainly different in some ways.

Iliana was surprised that she'd been excused from classes that day, and by the Headmaster, no less. Appropriately bemused, she had made way to her mother's office per the request she'd gotten from her mother that same morning. She had to admit, she was worried what was to come from this, if only because her mother would never in a million years get her excused from school for a whole day, least of all in the first week - not unless she was on the verge of death. Not bothering to knock, when she arrives, she twists the doorknob and pushes it open. "Mum?" Poking her head in, she doesn't see Malia. No, in her stead is her other mother. Valentina. It takes a moment for it to click in Iliana's head as she shuts the door with a soft click behind her, but when it does, it all makes sense. Why else would she be excused from class? With her shitty luck, it made sense: her mother had come back from the dead. How typical of Russians. "...Mama?" Iliana's brow furrows. No, no, it's virtually impossible. Nah. Russians might have 9 lives, but she was pretty damn sure Lena wouldn't come back after four fucking years of being gone.

The breath was stolen from Lena's body as the figure of her daughter appeared in the doorway — her mouth was dry, and she needed to grip the chair's armrests to steady herself. Iliana had grown so much in the years she had been gone; she'd noted every birthday, every Christmas, every holiday she'd missed. "воробушек," she breathed. "You — you've grown so much, I — didn't think I'd get to see any of this. God, what am I doing, that's not the kind of thing you want to hear, I'm sorry, I — I'm sorry that...that getting back was out of my hands for so long."

To her credit, Iliana doesn't immediately break down or starts screaming for explanations. On the contrary, she just stares as her mother begins speaking, only reacting as she flinches away. "N - no," she stammers. "You - mama is dead. She's gone. Don't - who are you? Who let you in here?"

It felt like being punched in the gut, and that showed in the twist of her mouth for the briefest moment before she steadied herself — this reaction could be expected, it had been four years, it would be hard to embrace a sudden re-arrival. "I'm very much not dead," she said patiently, instead, "though I understand why you think that, because everyone did." Her hand ran through her hair, as she tried to settle her anxiety. "I owe you an explanation, I know — but first, if you want to scream at me, or something, you're within your rights to."

It takes several long moments for reality to set in for Iliana, and when it does, she can feel her heart drop to her stomach. Her heart begins racing as her muscles tense up. "Where have you been?" she grits out through clenched teeth, "If you are who you claim to be, where have you been? It's been - it's been four years."

The hardest question first — that was very much her daughter, through and through. "In the middle of Siberia," she replied as evenly as she could, "after the mission I was on went very badly wrong; apparently, the trust in the Russian Auror Office to warn me of all developments was...misplaced. I'll not mention the details, because they're not pleasant to hear or to relive, but...what I will say is that I absolutely did my best to come home to you, to Val, and the triplets — to your mother, too." Lena bit her lip, trying to rein in raw emotion that threatened to overwhelm her. "I really did, and I love you, and I'm so sorry it couldn't be faster."

There had been an edge to Iliana's tone that ceased to exist the second things began to settle, and she began to realize there was an existing possibility this was really happening. That Lena - her mother - was actually back. There's a lump in her throat and her eyes burn with unshed tears as she looks at her with more uncertainty than before. "Tell me something only mama would know."

"That's hard, I'm naturally a sharer," a faint smile twitched at her lips, "but I can tell you exactly what happened when you and Val were born. She asked me if I could wait five more days so that she could do you two's birthdays, and mine, on the same day. I told her she could fuck right off."

Not about your job, though, Iliana thinks, embittered by the knowledge it had been Lena's profession that had ultimately deprived her of a mother for some of the most important years of her childhood. Wincing a little at the language (even though she has most certainly used it herself), Ili sniffles. Okay. Okay. She's pretty sure nobody else knows that, let alone anyone who might unreasonably be trying to pass off as her mother. Her expression softens, and her shoulders just sag. This is real. "It's you," she whispers. "Are you - are you back? For good?"

The relief on Lena's face was written plain as day. "Yeah," she nodded, her smile soft and apologetic. "I'm not going back to the Auror Office — not ever. I'm not risking anything happening again."

It felt odd, certainly, knowing she was back at Hogwarts. As a professor, no less, who carried the title of Head of House. Whilst she harbored some resentment over being deprived of the opportunity to be Head for Gryffindor - her house during her time at the school - she was still grateful for the opportunity. (And the raise that came with it.) She had rearranged the office a little since her arrival, but she had to admit, she liked how the previous Head had had it, so for the most part, it was intact. As she sat at her desk, writing out the last of her lesson plans for the semester, she couldn't help but wonder how things were faring with her girls.

Etta was so, so, so, so use to this office being her office that she completely forgot she had moved out to another office. It was after the feast and Etta was practically exhausted, ready to collapse into bed and sleep the next century away. When she pushed the door open and her eyes hit Malia, Etta had to stop herself from screaming. It took a moment of standing there, watching Malia with wide eyes and a pale face, to realise Etta's mistake and every part of her wanted to slam the door shut and walk away and never face Malia again out of simple embarrassment. "Professor Sakellarios," she said, her hand awkwardly fiddling with the knob of the door. "How are you going? I'm just...checking in on the head of houses." Plausible, definitely plausible. Briefly, her eyes looked around the office, her lips biting down on her lips. It hadn't been changed a lot but she could still see some differences.
