Independent to the point where some might call her selfish, Henri hasn't quite jumped on the whole 'self growth is important' train. Consider society lucky she decided to leave illegal activity behind her. Despite her attempts to live a clean life, that doesn't mean Henri is the perfect citizen. Far from it. At least she's paying her taxes. Witty and sarcastic, Henri is quick to call people out. Even if it's unnecessary. Look-she can be arrogant, sure, but she'll be damned if people try and be arrogant around her. Henri is self reliant to the max, even the idea of sharing her things with someone else is jarring in her mind. She grew up with her possessions being snatched by her older siblings. Henri likes her privacy and the only person she'd consider letting into her personal space is her partner. Not that Henri really thinks that area of her life is going to be happening any time soon. But she finds that person tends to be the only one who's ever been able to gain her trust. Is that cliche? Who knows. Maybe Henri hasn't had much of a social life that she can only think of one person to have truly gotten to know her and that person happened to be her ex wife. Point is-Henri doesn't like trusting people she doesn't know. And she doesn't really go out of her way to rectify this. She is diligent though and an extremely hard worker. Once you put her mind onto something it's hard to shake her from it. Which she doesn't like either. It's not her fault she likes to analyse things. Perceptive to a fault, Henri is constantly on edge and aware of her scenario. She often finds herself relaxed once she's put up three protective spells over her house after locking every door and window. Yeah, you can call her paranoid. Henri's not one to sit back and plan either. She doesn't like to play chess-she gets bored. But she can be sentimental and takes the time out of her day to memorise everything she can about the people she cares for. She trusts them. Blindly. Though she has begun to resent this part of herself. Henri's not a leader. Nor is she a soldier. Henri is just...Henri. A bookstore owner who can be as stubborn as all hell, swears a little too much, and refuses to be dragged back into the criminal life.
Henri is English born. London, to be specific. New Malden, to be even more specific. Both parents were muggle born, neither having even a drop of knowledge about the magical world. Not that they would have cared if they knew. Both trapped in their own little world that was the small Korean restaurant that the past three generations have cared for. Having fled the Korean war, Henri's family travelled little outside of their small area that soon grew, coincidentally, as the largest Korean population in Europe. Henri was the youngest of eight children. She was assigned male at birth. The misfortunes of the birth lottery strikes again. She hopes you can move on from this and excuse the lack of detail in her transition. This part of her life is not considered important, at least not to her. Her parents wrote her out of the will for being magical-so their reaction to her gender never occurred. It was, in truth, a private transition that she went through without the aid of her family or friends. Point is-unimportant. She just so happened to have been born in a body she later modified. In fact, there is only one photo of her before the age of sixteen in existence and she has it locked away in a safe.
At the time, Henri was often overlooked. She was the youngest and she often spent her time helping out in the kitchens. Which just meant washing every single dish. Baby Henri didn't realise that they just reused the dishes she cleaned. She might have assumed there was a never ending stream of dishes. Dishes-she still refuses to do them manually to this day. She never connected with her siblings. The closest sibling to her was almost four years older than her and, because of their desire to look cool in the other sibling's eyes, often pushed Henri to the side. The only person who truly spent time with Henri was her mother. But even then-it was only in the kitchen. Henri's mother was a quiet one, preferring to spend her time bent over a stove than to converse with the people around her. So her and Henri often worked well. Silence was their conversation. It was quite nice. When she was seven years old, her magical incident came. She was in a fight with an older brother and, when he walked away, he suddenly found himself tripping over nothing and fell down the stairs. He...broke his ankle and was in crutches for months. Henri didn't know what happened but she had little empathy for him. He deserved it.
School was unimportant. She never really cared for academics and found herself struggling to focus on reading and doing numbers. All she was excited for was to go home and spend time with her mum. All her older siblings did amazing in school. All pushed towards medicine and law. Whilst there was the unsaid expectation that Henri would be the one to grow up and take over the family business. And this might have happened if Henri didn't receive her Hogwarts acceptance letter when she was ten years old. Like usual, a ministry official came along with it to introduce the family to the mechanics of the wizarding world and what it meant for Henri. In such a large family, the reactions were mixed. Some were accepting, even jealous, most were sceptical and wary but the worst was Henri's mother.
Rejected outright, Henri's mother refused to acknowledge Henri after that. Her reasons? Well-her mum never liked change. Never liked it when someone broke the status quo and being told that the world was full of magic took breaking the status quo to a whole new level. Her bubble was broken. And Henri was the closest thing to blame. Typical story, really. A reaction the ministry had seen a million times before. So, at the age of ten, she was kicked out and taken to Lil Bundles and a year later-she was on the boat to Hogwarts. Henri was always a quiet child so her reaction to the disowning was one of quiet solitude. Internalising it. She didn't know anyone and she didn't trust any of them enough to express her hurt. So that was what the next few years was like. Growing alone in Hogwarts, learning how to live independently and how to rely on her own instincts. It also meant accepting every crevice of her own identity and growing into them to ensure that she could live her best life. However, naturally, she was going to find herself walking down the wrong path. In her seventh year, she met her. Veronika. It was never that, individually, they're toxic. It's just when they're thrown together that it becomes toxic. It was them against the world. Neither had family, neither had wealth, only each other. Neither had much of a future. Barely a galleon to each of their names. So they began to find their own ways to try and survive.
After graduation, they moved in together in Knockturn alley. By this time, Henri was living completely as Henri. Whilst both were never affiliated with any underground group, they began to set themselves up as mercenaries. Henri was smart-she always had been in her own way. But she was sharp, she noticed things. Every little hair, every little particle of dust, was sorted through her mind. Whilst neither liked to get violent, they were good at finding people and stealing. One might have thought Henri had photographic memory with the way she could memorise people's passwords with a simple glance. No-she just had a way of being able to retain all of it. Usually she thought of a rhyme and scattered what she needed to remember in it. Either way-they were robbing people and Henri was the one doing it all. Veronika, who was by this time her girlfriend, was the one thinking of the plans. The mastermind. It worked-Veronika was the more logical, strategic, whilst Henri was the diligent worker. They worked with a lot of people and provided a wide array of services, including finding people, providing potions and other ingredients, and forgery. During this time, Henri learnt occlumens. She wanted something to protect herself and she couldnt master the legilimen spell so she ended up learning occlumens. Whilst this was fine for nearly twenty years, this lifestyle was going to catch up to them sooner or later. As mentioned before-they weren't good for each other. They bickered a lot. Hurt each other-a lot. Henri suspects her neighbours were use to falling asleep to them screaming at each other. When they were around thirty two, Veronika took on a mistress without Henri knowing. Of course Henri didn't know-Merlin knows how Henri might have reacted if she found-well. Actually. Merlin does know.
It didn't come out until two years later.
The mistress had gotten involved in some gang. Well, not really. She was the princess of a rival gang in Europe. It's how her and Veronika met. Through work. Henri was doing something else and the mistress turned up to the store. Two years later-the rival gang found out and a target was put onto both their backs. Well, Henri was unaware of this development but she was also under target. By association. Veronika was aware of this. She wasn't deaf or blind. She had ears in places. She knew getting involved with this girl meant certain risks and, unfortunately, the risks were turning into a reality. Unfortunately, this meant that Henri ended up being caught in the crossfire. Luckily, it wasn't bad. They'd made enough friends over the years that, by the time the dark wizards came knocking on their door, people were willing to help out. However, it meant a nasty month in St. Mungos for Henri. What this meant, ultimately, was that everything came out in the open and....well, Henri still hasn't talked to her ex-wife since she was able to move out. Even when the divorce papers were signed, Henri refused to turn up in person. Not that Henri didn't try to stay together at first. She did. She tried and tried to convince Veronika to give them another try. Veronika was all she had and Henri was loyal to a fault. She wanted to try again. But Veronika wanted the divorce and eventually, Henri just...ghosted her.
Alone again.
Henri decided that she was done with the criminal life. She was...what? Thirty four turning thirty five? She had enough savings, especially from the divorce, to be able to clean her hands of it. So what else was there to do with her life except take over an empty theatre in Lincliff city and turn it into a bookstore slash cafe? It's what any other self-respecting reformed criminal would do.
