Jamil al-Ghazzawi was born in Gaza, Palestine to Ahmed and Elham al-Ghazzawi. Ahmed was a muggle man who had fallen in love with Elham, a witch who hailed from Shiraz, in Iran. Jamil was the first of seven children, each of whom had magical ability. Growing up, Jamil and his siblings had a...troubled childhood. It was, to say the least, disruptive. Tensions between the residents of the Gaza Strip against the Israelis in Palestine was not a conducive environment to raise a stable family. The al-Ghazzawis, like many of their Palestinian neighbours, lived in daily fear of attacks, or worse, from Israeli officials and police.
It was when Jamil turned 9 years old, that Ahmed and Elham decided it was time to flee. They locked up the house, and left in the middle of the night. It was winter, and Jamil remembers the experience as being bitterly cold, with rain and thunder crashing above him, as though the devil himself had cursed their attempt to escape. Ahmed had organised for the family to get onto a boat, to get them out of Gaza and then headed into Europe - possibly to Italy, or Greece, where they'd start afresh. They weren't alone - there were several other families on the run, and they had agreed to rendezvous at the West Bank at midnight, and then leave. But it was not that simple. Israeli authorities had heard about the plan, and intended on stopping it. As they reached the dock, there were only two more passengers left to board the boat. Ahmed, and Jamil. Jamil pleaded with his father, but Ahmed wasn't having any of it. He gave Jamil the key to their house in Palestine, and told him that he was now the head of the family, before pushing him onto the boat. |
personality

Jamil is very distrustful. He's always grown up watching his own back, and this has had negative implications on his trust issues. He's always found it difficult to cope with authority, due to the fact that he's been messed around by so many adults in his life. This made schooling particularly tricky. The death of his father didn't help with this, as he had to work extra hard from a young age to be the 'man' of the family. For this reason, Jamil can be considered mature - especially for his young age. He's used to making big decisions for his mother and younger siblings all his life.
He's also not sure about his future. Jamil comes from a background where he's been persecuted, and chased out of his home for so long, that he's never really had a chancve to plan long-term. Every day was about surviving until the next day. That was, until, he reached France. And even then, the immediate concern was how we was going to support his family without his dad. He's quite keen to see what England would have to offer, since it's his last year at school and he wants to start afresh. He'd quite like to be an auror or a lawyer, but at this moment, he's just too unsure of whether he'd actually be able to do any of that. |
