The Duval family wasn't always the dynasty they came to be known as throughout Europe, but, then again, everything has to start somewhere.
Born in Lyon, Lawrence wasn't raised in a lavish and grand household. He grew up as the youngest son in a muggle, low income family. He didn’t have his first tastes of the wizarding world until he was eleven, learning about his acceptance at the magical school of Beauxbatons. Before he learned about the existence of wizards and witches, his closest grip on magic were the few incidents that sprung up every now and then. Those incidents always seemed to be done alone, and no one ever seemed to blink an eye when he described them due to Lawrence's large imagination. The reality of magic fascinated Lawrence more than scared him when officially attending school, especially when it was applied to muggle-based objects. Playing cards that flew and exploded made preteen him exhilarated. Board games were one of the few connections he had with his old world and his new one. Each year he would bring board games that went untouched at home to school, so he could magically modify them and play the new versions with friends.
A frequent player of Lawrence’s board games came to be Angele Delacour, daughter to two prestige and rich pure-blood wizards. Some believed she was fascinated by the games the boy modified, but truthfully she used her interest as an excuse to befriend the boy himself. She admired his ambitions and how he could talk about his dreams for hours and hours (if she left him, which she often did). The friendship became a mutual crush rather quickly, but both took many years to admit their feelings. Pining seemed to be easier than rejection for the both of them, you see, but eventually their mutual friends pushed them together until a real relationship was born. For the following two years in Beauxbatons, Angele and Lawrence were open about being together to everyone but Angele’s parents. She feared that she might be disowned, which her suspicions would be proven right when revealing their engagement two years after graduation. The strong divide between pure-bloods and muggle-borns appeared to be strong for many families, and Angele's parents weren't absent from this mindset. So, they cut ties with their daughter after a feeling of 'betrayal.' They didn't attend the wedding, but they mended their connection enough as years went by to witness the birth of their grandchildren and invest in Lawrence's business.
Angele ended up giving birth to two twin sons, Alexandre and Edmond, but Lawrence’s real baby would be born five years after—Duval’s Magical Games. His first store was small and quaint. It was well-liked only by few, as only a few seemed to be able to find it. For a while, the family relied on Angele’s income from working in the medical field. When the Duval patriarch started a business directed to a wizard-only customer, people doubted his chance of success due to his muggle-born 'status'. The truth was that he really required good business skills and a tad bit of luck. Eventually his store grew traction, and, when business started booming, it boomed fast. More locations would pop up throughout the magical world of Lyon, and some locations appeared sparsely through other parts of France. In forty years of ownership, he ended up proving more people than wrong in his life than right. By the time he was seventy-two, Lawrence and Angele could retire early without ever worrying about finances again, and he also passed the business down to the eldest of his two sons, Alexandre.
Raised in a life of business, specifically within Duval's Magical Games' headquarters, Alexandre was prepared to become the next CEO. He was similar to his father in the fact his work was often prioritized, consuming up his time more than his three children; in order by age they were Henry, Juliette, and Lucien. While Lawrence successfully opened up stores throughout France, Alexandre managed to expand outside the country and through other parts of Europe. The company name also changed to 'Duval's Magical Games and Toys' as he expanded the variety of products. The business saw a big rise in revenue through his ownership, and the Duvals officially became a slightly popular household name. Similar to Alexandre's raising, all three of his children grew up learning the basics of business, but most specifically Henry. Being the eldest, most assumed he'd inherit the business. Although, despite being against muggle-born prejudice in the wizarding world, Alexandre still was raised with some traditional mindsets, including an unsteadiness when Henry married a half-nymph. Out of spite, he refused to follow tradition of naming the eldest son heir of the company, skipped over Juliette due to an added sexist mindset, and Lucien Duval, the baby boy of the family, was announced the new CEO of 'Duval's Magical Games and Toys' when Alexandre retired.
Lucien Duval was the creative, left brain-leaning kid in a family of business people. He married an up-and-coming actress, Jeanne, and had three children who were his priority—not the company. He had a job in the ministry for his father's sake, but he also wrote poetry under an alias on the side. He never assumed he would be the heir of the infamous toy business he was surrounded by as a child, and nearly dropped dead when Alexandre revealed the unimaginable truth. Without any reasoning to say no and the offer that could do his family better economically, he took his father's position. Bad move! Sometimes Lucian and others wished they had discussed with a seer the incident that would occur when an art boy who liked following the crowd was put in the CEO position. A seer would have said, "Disaster, disaster! Steer back." No seer was involved though, as—if you can remember—their father put a big fat no, no sticker on half-breeds, werewolves, and other special magical people and species that weren't fully human and wizard blood. Lucien, in his years, caused economic turmoil for 'Duval's Magical Games and Toys.' Locations were forced to be closed, and many wondered if the company would go bankrupt after being in its peak of success. The answer was no; it would be saved in the nick of time when Lucien decided to retire his position to care for his dying brother. It was terrible circumstances for the Duval family to lose Henry at a young age due to a rare, magically-mutated disease, but the rest of the world saw the new and first female CEO, Bianca Duval, as the saving grace of the company.
Bianca Duval was the saving grace. She was the toy industry's Jesus, being put in the head position to save the Duval company from going bankrupt. While Lucien was skipped in the successful business man genetics, Bianca inherited the genes instead. She was a financial advisor for the period before taking ownership of the company, married to Louisa Duval (a squib and well known human rights advocate), and adopted a plethora of children. When taking over the business, she brought back its previous revenue and reopened locations. She branched out from Europe, and, in 2040, the first 'Duval's Magical Games and Toys' store in the United States. At the same time, following in her father's footsteps, she tried to remain in a close relationship with all her children. She was considered the 'strict parent' between her and Louisa, but she listened to them when making tough decisions. She took all their input when she brought up the idea of relocating to the United Kingdom for business opportunity and interest, but, alas, not every single child could be pleased. There were too many of them to get a unanimous vote, although it still went in her favor... if she counted the neutral opinions, which she did.
As far as Brianna Clarke believed, she wouldn’t ever be a part of the Duval family in any definition of the word. She was a no-maj, a student in Jamaica, and she had no idea about the world that existed behind everything else, least of all this notorious dynasty. Her biggest worries were the bills, school and her cigs, until all of a sudden, it wasn’t just her. Zachary Duval was on vacation when he met Brianna, and one mojito led to another margarita and before they ended up hooking up back at his hotel room. It was a one night fling that wasn’t really supposed to lead to anything else, but six weeks later and the symptoms were raging; the sore boobs, the nausea, the morning sickness. She didn’t intend to terminate the pregnancy once she found out, and was committed to letting go of her more dangerous habits if it meant raising her children, but she knew she needed to get back in contact with Zachary. Maybe he could help financially, because she really couldn’t handle the expenses of a baby. After tracking him down through social media and letting him in on her pregnancy, he immediately flew down to Jamaica and, suffice to say, it all went to shit. He armed up with the best lawyers, and immediately, Brianna knew she was in deep shit.
Zachary wanted full custody. He didn’t necessarily want to raise the child on his own, but he didn’t trust Brianna to have the means to successfully raise their child. She was young, still in college, and broke. He was right… but she didn’t want to lose her child — or children, really, as she found out about having twins in the birthing room during her home birth. She kept the truth hidden from Zachary, and her birthing aide only ever told him about Godfrey per her personal request and all HIPAA laws. A custody battle ensued, but in the end, she willingly gave all parental rights away to Zachary, having no attachment to Godfrey in the way she did her secret son, Leopold. She’d always known he’d be given away, so… it was just different for her as a mother. He had the funds and access to opportunities that she didn’t, and at least she could rest easily knowing her eldest would be well taken care of. Hitting more closely to home, though, Leopold continued to be her secret until long after Zachary had departed with Godfrey. After her unsavory experiences with Zachary, there just wasn’t any way she and her son wouldn’t share a special bond. They were each other’s best friend and #1 person.
For a long time, Leopold grew up thinking he was a superhero, even if he grew up in Washington D. after his mother graduated when he was one, and was surrounded, quite literally, by heroes of all kinds. His first magical manifestation was at 7, when he put all the groceries away without lifting so much as a finger. There on out, all his signs revolved around chores, but somehow, his mother was never around. He reasons nowadays that even subconsciously, he had enough control to hide the truth from her — only because he thought he could only use his powers in the daytime. By the time he felt comfortable with the concept of telling her, other priorities presented themselves. Brianna had been diagnosed with lung cancer when he was eight. Although, she didn’t tell him until he was eleven, just after his birthday and three months before he received an invitation to Ilvermorny. Initially, he thought he could heal her. Why not? He was a superhero, wasn’t he? But sadly, he couldn’t. When he was told he was a wizard by MACUSA employees, it was done so from the ICU at the local hospital. When she passed away some time later, the aurors made it a point to find him a foster family until he departed for Ilvermorny, or find his biological father. Rifling through documents, which was difficult given how well she hid them all, they found Zachary’s information as well as Godfrey’s.
At first, Leo didn’t know how to feel. He was still in shock, so any reaction was out of the question. As it turned out, Zachary didn’t care to adopt Leopold immediately. He hadn’t known about his second son, and by that point, Godfrey was raised by Zachary's first cousin, Bianca. On the other hand, Bianca definitely thought he was a priority, which is why the papers were filed immediately and, rather than studying at Ilvermorny, he began his studies at Beauxbatons, where he had the opportunity to foster a new relationship with his adoptive mothers and estranged twin brother, Godfrey.
Despite feeling estranged at Beauxbatons for his first year without his biological mother or newly adopted mothers, Leo became more comfortable with it as the years passed by and he opened himself up. Godfrey was always there no matter what day or time, and there was a connection between the two that made for a fast-growing relationship. In a few years time, the twins were inseparable and it was hard to tell they hadn't known each other their whole lives. Beyond his family, Leo was also skilled in making new friends at school. Even when there was a language barrier while he was learning french, he found ways to relations without needing to speak. He enjoyed his school, his mass amount of friends, and the quidditch team he played on (although he was never as good as he thought he was), so it was rough news when his mothers announced they'd be moving to the UK for his final year. Instead of having the seventh year he dreamed of at Beauxbatons, he was put in Hogwarts for its closer proximity to both Bianca and Louisa.
