Magnus is a very unassuming individual; nothing about him screams criminal and, if you were to meet him on the street, you'd swear he was an upstanding citizen. He is a fairly pleasant person to be around. Not inheriting his mother's disdain for wizardkind, Magnus gets along with everyone he meets and enjoys seeing the lighter sides of situations. A natural charm and charisma paired with him being an extroverted powerhouse and it's very hard to not feel like you're at least friends with him. He enjoys making those around him feel comfortable and tries his best to lighten the mood in whatever room he's in, whether that be in a more formal situation or not. He likes to adept to give himself the best possible chance of achieving said lightheartedness. Of all the passions Magnus has, potions takes the winning spot for him. Fixating on it when he was in first year, Magnus has honed his craft to make him - in his very humble opinion, thank you very much - one of the better potioneers for his age in Europe. Is that true? Who knows. Does he care? Nope. Nobody can disprove him (bar a few within The Black Parade, perhaps) so he has no need to destroy the reputation he's built for himself.
Make no mistake, however. For as much as Magnus is easygoing, pleasant and nice to be around, he was sorted into Ombrelune for a reason. His deception, cunningness and willingness to do whatever it takes to better himself is what gives him an edge - or at least it does in his opinion. When stealing from those close to you, nobody expects the one that makes you feel like part of the furniture from the first conversation and Magnus knows this, exploiting it for all it's worth. He's the type to very happily smile a warm smile when he meets you and use that same smile as he takes some of your livelihood away from you. Magnus thrives on being feared somewhat, especially by those among his circle. Whether this be fearing him by name, appearance or the reputation of the crimes he's committed, Magnus enjoys knowing that people out there dread him appearing and doing what he does best. Somewhere locked deep inside of Magnus, however, is the conflict within himself for not living up to what his mother had wanted him to do. He feels like he let her down and, with each spell cast, that becomes more apparent internally. He doesn't know where this conflict will end up or how he'll act at it's conclusion but, for right now, he's suppressing it as much as he can. This does mean, unfortunately, he's prone to some anger outbursts and some otherwise out of character introvertedness and snapping.
Like many, Magnus Tonnesen's story begins with the trauma of his parents or, for him, parent. Zéphyrine Roux was a French Veela who hailed from a colony located in the Bois de Vincennes, the largest park in Paris. Hidden from muggles, the group thrived amongst it's own kind. Like many in the colony, Zéphyrine was brought up to fear wizardkind and to see them as expendable - a means to an end. She was told that the wizard was always worthy of a Veela's anger and that the wizard brought nothing but pain to the Veela. From the moment her own magic came into fruition, Zéphyrine was nudged in the direction of offence rather than defence and the mentality that being feared was far better than being liked. As such, it was of little surprise to anyone within the colony that Zéphyrine turned to a life of crime at a young, early age. They may not have condoned it outright, but the elders never said a word as the young girl always made sure amenities were given.
Zéphyrine always liked to say her crime had good intentions because, well, it did. She stole from wizards to give back to her colony. Being secluded in a muggle park meant they had to forgo various things and, through stealing, she was able to acquire them. The appreciation she felt from her fellow Veela was all the affirmation Zéphyrine needed to negate any other avenues of life. Though she started young, there was always the chance for a life away from crime but helping her species called to her. As soon as she saw young Veela benefit from her actions, she honed in on the life she was leading. She became, very literally, a Veela Robin Hood. As she saw her own colony grow to not need her help anymore, Zéphyrine looked beyond Paris to see where else she could help.
Thus, the life of serial crime for Zéphyrine Roux began. From forest to forest, town to city, wherever she found a veela colony she would linger and steal constantly from the wizards who lived nearby. She was indiscriminate; pure-bloods, half-bloods or muggle-borns all had to atone for what their kind had done to her's through repayments of their possessions now. Zéphyrine never once harmed a wizard, no, but she made it clear that she wasn't to be stopped or followed. It was in the small community of Estaing that Zéphyrine first got wind that the French Ministry was actively pursuing her. She hadn't known where, but somewhere in her path of serial crime someone had told their story and now she was being hunted for it. Stealing for the Veela then became a game for Zéphyrine; she would let the authorities get close enough to her where they felt comfortable before slipping without a trace. She began to get destructive in her methods, however, beginning to care less and less if the Veela she left behind were punished in lieu of her.
Crossing the sea to Norway hadn't been one of Zéphyrine's original ideas. She had planned to disappear deep into the French forestry and only resurface at critical times but a few amateur fumbles had caused her to abandon France as a whole; people were beginning to get too wise about her actions and more began to trace her footsteps. Making her footsteps appear to disappear into the sea had been her safest option. Part of her would always feel guilty from that moment on that she abandoned the Veela in France but she knew that she needed to prioritise herself. Besides, if she didn't help the Veela, who would?
Life in Norway was a little more subdued than Zéphyrine had originally thought. Although she knew that the Norwegian Ministry would send her back to France the first chance they got, there was a renewal within her. Not enough to stray her from her mental goal of elevating Veelas above wizardkind, but enough to subdue her. It was during this time that she met Asmund Tonnesen, a Norwegian Ministry worker who was hopeful for change and equality for all. They had met when he caught her trying to steal from him to sustain herself. Rather than get defensive like the wizards before him had, Asmund displayed some form of empathy and wanted to connect with Zéphyrine on some level. She rejected it at first but a game of cat and mouse ensued, this time Zéphyrine being the bait. It took him a while via coaxing the Veela with items that he knew she needed but, eventually, the two came to be on talking terms. Instead of being horrified with her, like Zéphyrine had assumed he would be, Asmund sympathised with her and tried to understand. A mutual understanding turned to a friendship that soon blossomed with some form of love, especially when Asmund would go to great lengths to hide Zéphyrine from the Ministry he worked for.
Whilst Asmund was the only wizard Zéphyrine ever cared for, she never intended to stay beyond getting herself on her feet in Norway. As soon as she grasped the language well enough and could navigate the terrain, she planned to find Veela colonies hidden away and help them like she did to those in France. Staying with Asmund - becoming anything official with him, no less - had never been an option Zéphyrine wanted to consider. Not properly. A mistake, however, caused her to throw her plans in the wind. A small mistake by the name of Øystein Tonnesen. The pregnancy startled Zéphyrine and forced her to put a masquerade on, to pretend to Asmund that she wanted to reform to give their child the best possible start. Externally, she went to great lengths to convince Asmund. Internally, she was cursing herself for contributing to the very race of beings she vowed to cripple for the sake of her own. Zéphyrine knew she could never leave her child, however, not until he was much older. For however much he was a wizard, Øystein was still half-Veela and convincing him to take more pride in that consumed her. An ally in her household would allow her to resume the life she had put on pause. Though she loved him and respected him, being tied to Asmund infuriated Zéphyrine for she had promised herself that she'd never let a wizard tie her down.
Life had never been kind to Zéphyrine, however, and her son was no exception. From a young age Øystein showed signs of adhering strictly to rules and being adverse towards any kind of deviance. Though he enjoyed the wandless magic his mother could produce, waving a wand and flying on a broomstick enthralled him more. To Zéphyrine, it looked as if her son would honour his Veela heritage but prioritise his wizard one more - the very opposite of what she wanted. Thus, Magnus Beaumont Tonnesen graced the world.
As much as his parents loved him, Magnus would always be his mother's second attempt at creating a mini-me. He wasn't born of love or passion (at least not on his mother's side) but a convenience. In Zéphyrine's mind, she was already tied down by one child so what was another? She knew her eldest son could turn her in happily; she wanted Magnus to be the one to cover up for her. For Zéphyrine, Magnus was a means to an end and nothing more. To Asmund, however, he was just happy that he had two healthy sons.
At the beginning of his life, it appeared as if Magnus was to follow in his older brother's footsteps as he lent into his father's ways. Zéphyrine, not wanting to have a third child with the wizard, took matters into her own hand and began to indoctrinate Magnus. Whilst other magical mothers would tell their children stories and legends of wizards and how great they were, Zéphyrine recounted the folk tales that she had been taught when she was young. It mattered not to her that he couldn't comprehend what he was hearing - he was under two, after all - but more so that her words would become the little voice inside his head as he grew older. By three, Magnus became disinterested in his father's magic and grew fixated on his mother's. Asmund saw nothing wrong with it and Zéphyrine would forever smile to herself and comment internally at how blind he was. Despite this infatuation with Veela magic, Magnus never lost his entire interest in wizarding magic and Zéphyrine had to accept that her son had aspirations to attend Beauxbatons or Durmstrang.
Magnus' first magical experience happened when he was six on a family trip to the northern French town of Boulogne-sur-Mer. In a close encounter with the French Ministry as the family was out enjoying the day, Magnus prematurely set off the fireworks around them out of fear of how his parents were acting. The hysteria and confusion that followed gave the family enough time to slip away from the scene and return to their home on the outskirts of Oslo. Magnus inadvertently protecting his mother from the French Ministry spurred Zéphyrine on to accelerate her indoctrination of him.
Now, Magnus could've gone either way in his early life. He showed enough similarities to his older brother that, if harnessed, he would've stood by every rule he was given. In the same breath, however, he had enough of a curiosity and a desire for the best life possible that thievery and a life of crime came easy to him; much like it had done to his mother. By the age of nine, it seemed that a sense of kleptomania was developing within him to which his mother capitalised on further.
It was around this time that Zéphyrine came to the end of her masquerade as a happy, reformed Veela. She couldn't stand trying to blend in with the wizard folk around her and found it hard to look at her children and not be disgusted at half their parentage. As much as she favoured Magnus over his brother, she felt disgust with him too. Deciding she'd much rather test the theory on if the Slavic legends on Veela were true than to live another year as a witch, Zéphyrine sowed the final seed in Magnus' brain. Knowing he was excited to go attend Beauxbatons, Zéphyrine pulled him aside one day and plucked a strand of her own hair, handing it to him. She gave him the explicit instructions that, when the core was place inside a wand, she would always be with him and that any magic he produced would come from her as well. Embellishing the truth slightly, Zéphyrine placed emphasise on him doing her proud and to remember that he'd always be half-Veela - even if she wasn't there to remind him. Though confused, Magnus was distracted with the prospect of having his own wand and rushed to find his father to get it made, allowing Zéphyrine to slip out of the home and into the forests around Oslo.
Asmund, though devastated, always expected Zéphyrine to run soon. Through shielding her from the Norwegian Ministry, he came to learn of her extensive past and decided that wishing her the best was the most productive thing he could do. Unaware of the seeds planted in his youngest son's head, he empathised with her and hoped she found peace. That being said, however, he moved on quickly and married a co-worker, Veronica Dahler. Together they had two children themselves, Åge and Karina. Though thrilled to have younger siblings himself, Magnus never connected with his younger siblings like he did with his brother and some of the ideology that his mother had spouted to him began to cast some doubts in his young brain.
Magnus forgot about some of his mother's teachings as he attended Beauxbatons, immersing himself fully in the wizarding lifestyle. He was sorted into Ombrelune and fully thrived. Although he focused largely on his wizard heritage, his mother's words never left him. Whenever he cast a spell, Magnus was conscious of her words and how she was aiding him in his magic. That in itself reminded him of how well he was able to partake in deviance and such thoughts wound linger throughout his time at Beauxbatons.
His life of crime truly began when he was in fifth year and discovered an affinity for potioneering. Where others in his year would fail with some of the more complex potions, Magnus would thrive and he found new innovative ways to use potions. Polyjuice had become a favourite of his, although he had a penchant for smoke bombs and those that were unassuming. He began to venture out to the small villages that dotted the Pyrenees around Beauxbatons and steal from them, much like his mother had done to the small wizard communes around Paris. At first he felt guilty about it before detaching himself from it in the name of acquiring what he wanted. He appeared to have a natural affinity for it and, if others could use their affinities to better themselves, why couldn't he do the same?
Magnus never gained the same desire to help the Veela population out like his mother had done and had wanted him to do, but by the time he graduated he was a serial petty criminal that was advancing into more dangerous crimes as the days went by. With enviable grades and potioneering skills that could - in his opinion - rival some of the potion teachers at Beauxbatons, Magnus knew the world was his oyster and he could do whatever he wanted in life.
Although newly departed from Beauxbatons, word of Magnus' skills and way of life made it's way around the continent and he found it hard to cover his tracks as well as he once was able to. Somehow working in a small wizarding shop in a Pyrenees wizarding commune didn't work as effectively as a cover up as a Beauxbatons student had done. Still, he wasn't deterred from his goals and went on his way to steal from some of the bigger names in the wizarding crime world - one such name being Søren Vynter. He hadn't known the occupant of the building he was stealing from, just that there were some rarer potion ingredients that were far easier to find in the possession of someone else than navigating the black market for. The man had been Magnus' final hit in the village he was in and he promptly left afterwards, unaware that he was being tracked.
For a man who, much like his mother, remained uncaught in his criminal tenure, Magnus' activities were put to a halt when he was cornered by Søren in the temporary accommodation he was in. Tensions were high and, naturally, Magnus was ready to be on the defence. With Søren walking in on his homemade potion brewery, however, discoveries were made and Magnus was outed as an adept potioneer. It was then that he learned of The Black Parade for the first time. Though it appealed to him, Magnus decided he needed some time and to tie up loose ends in France. With the instruction to let those relevant know that Søren had invited him, Magnus was left alone... with a few less potion ingredients than he would've liked.
It took Magnus a year before he sneaked across the border to seek The Black Parade. It took him a while - and several other wizards being robbed on his way - but he's made it and is eager to get to work.
