Hudson Radley-Abbott's Office
Hudsonoffice

The Minister for Magic's Office is located on Level 1 of the Ministry, Minister for Magic and Support Staff.

The current occupant is Hudson Radley-Abbott.

Hudson has largely brought over the same interior design that he had when he was the Head of Magical Education; neutral brown with a sleek and modern look to it. Still one to prefer being out on the job and not being cooped up in an office, this office is, again, decorated to primarily serve as a meeting place.

Brianna's Interview

Bri arrived just a little before the time set for her interview. This allowed her to prepare herself mentally, doing her best to calm her nerves and settle on a calmer mindset. Once the clock indicated it was time, Bri knocks on the door and takes a deep breath to calm herself one last time.

A restless man who didn't like to sit still, Hudson had been pacing around the room as he waited for Bri to arrive. It was weird, conducting interviews as Minister, but he hoped he was putting on a confidence face. Moving to open the door rather than using magic, he offered Bri a smile, "Ms. Yoon, correct?"

She returns the smile, pleasantly surprised by the stark difference between the new Minister and the old one in terms of greeting those who approach their office. "That would be me." She confirms with a nod. "Brianna Yoon." She extends a hand in greeting.

Though he figured that it was Brianna given that she got this far into the Ministry and came at the scheduled time, a confirmation was always nice. His smile remained firm on his face as he shook her hand, "Hudson Radley-Abbott. I suppose I should say Minister Radley-Abbott but..." Hudson's words trailed off with a shrug, his smile indicating that he wasn't going to be too strict with formalities early on in his ministry. He moved aside and offered the room to her, "Anywhere'll do; the desk or the small seating nook."

"Congratulations for your win, Minister." She says as she enters the office. Bri opts for the desk. Her heart was still pounding with nervousness but it was clear that Hudson was very far from the... mess... that was the previous minister so she has calmed down a bit.

Walking and taking the seat opposite her, he continued to smile. "Ah, thank-you." His cheeks reddened slightly; though he was used to the compliments, he still found it hard to get used to associate himself with the position of Minister. He took out a notepad and charmed a quill to write when given the signal so he could transcribe their interview. "So, Head of the Department of Mysteries, correct?"

"In my eyes, anyone who the previous minister drove away is someone that should be automatically reconsidered." Following behind her, he sat opposite Eden and pulled out a notebook and quill, charming the latter to scribe what was said between them when given the signal. "Thank-you," Hudson said easily, his own smile relaxing a little but becoming slightly more thin-lipped, as if reminder of the previous ministry was much more of a sore spot than he had let on during the elections. "All of the candidates would've done that; we couldn't have gotten much worse than the previous Minister if we had tried." That was a lie, somewhat, but Hudson wasn't one to dwell on it. "Head of International Magical Cooperation? That's a role that'll demand a lot of work given the previous ministry."

Like Hudson, Eden knows things actually could have taken a turn for even worse. Even now, under his administration, things could still go sour if any of Alistair's remaining supporters were to gain even half the power they had these past few years. In spite of that, she remained hopeful the country would know peace and flourish under the Radley-Abbott administration, though she knew it'd require a great deal of effort. "Any role in the government will demand a lot of work in the wake of everything that has occurred," Eden acknowledges with a nod, "Especially one as pivotal as Head of International Magical Cooperation. But I've worked in the Ministry for many years, and have been studying our laws for longer. I've worked for MACUSA as well, so I know what to expect of foreign governments - at least to a certain extent. I'm confident in my ability to not only restore our relationship with other countries, but to create domestic policies that will help cement a new era of peace and stability under your tenure as Minister," she pauses for a moment, as though carefully considering what to say next. When she gathers her thoughts into a coherent idea, she takes a small breath before continuing. "At risk of sounding cliché, I was born and raised in this very country. This is my home, and frankly, I know I have much more to offer to it beyond what I'm already doing."

He pursed his lips as he listened to her. She had passion for the role, he could evidently see that. Experience too? Eden was looking more and more like a godsend, but he'd have to probe for more before solidifying any choices. "Any role would require work, yes," He said with a nod, agreeing with her, "But on the international stage... that's next level. We are, to put it bluntly Ms. Lestrange, a joke at the moment. Countries are appalled we let a man such as the previous minister lead our country and those who aren't appalled, apparently, find it humorous that our standards have stooped so low. As one of the faces of this country in that regard, how would you go about restoring our prestige?" He lent back in his chair and offered her a smile, one that he hoped indicated he was impressed. "You've definitely impressed but I'd like to know more about your ability to restore our relationships internationally."

It takes just a few short moments for Eden to come up with an adequate response. When she does, she smiles politely. “I’ve been working in the International Magical Office of Law for several years now. Just recently, I also occupied a British Seat with the International Confederation. Sitting at the helm of both offices has made me well-acquainted with our ongoing struggles to salvage our reputation among our sister countries here in Europe and across the Atlantic Ocean. It has been very difficult thus far, and I don’t expect it to get any easier in the years to come, but we’ve been working diligently with the rest of the Confederation to revert the primitive laws set in place by Alistair Fitzgerald, as well as compensate those affected as best as we currently can,” There’s a brief pause as she looks down. She opens her portfolio and pulls out a folder, which she gladly extends towards Hudson.

“Within this folder are my plans for the Department of International Magical Cooperation. I plan to achieve all items outlined within the next four years. Most urgently is tending to our domestic policies. Although I understand that we’re currently a joke on the international stage, the best way to remedy this is to demonstrate we’ve built a strong foundation to grow from. While we have already abolished the most pressing policies - such as not being able to move to the muggle world, and requiring all part-humans to move to the Precinct - some have still slipped through the cracks. I’d like to fully eliminate all kinds of registries that could identify anyone whose identity could be used against them. It gives off the idea that they’re worth being persecuted and attacked. It strips them of self-respect and vilifies them, and in this era, I see no reason why these practices should be ongoing. Following the abolishment of all questionable laws, I would like to create a sub-department of the International Magical Cooperation department that is meant to specifically aid anyone who was affected by recent events. Setting up affordable housing, working with different businesses to set up more job opportunities for them - even creating more, here within the Ministry. Once these needs have been met, I think it would be wise to consider making it a permanent department. Having people that represent the underrepresented will give them a voice and help them understand that we’re here to work for and with them, not against them,” she explains.

“One of the biggest reasons we’re currently seen as the laughing stock country is because we don’t show any respect for our citizens, so it’s imperative we begin taking action and demonstrating that we do care. Only then will we prove we’ve learned and are looking to step away from our previous shortcomings. Going beyond that, once we’ve reached some modicum of stability, I would like to propose we host more international events. Although it doesn’t seem like it, having gone through what we’ve gone gives us a unique platform to stand on. For example, by hosting the Confederation and setting up a tour for them in areas like Lupin Boulevard and the modernized sectors of Lincliff City, we have an opportunity to showcase the strides we’ve taken for equality. It allows us to emphasize how, in spite of Alistair Fitzgerald, we continue to see muggles, squibs, and all others as an integral part of our daily lives. Once they begin to understand that, I truly believe we’ll begin to make great strides in restoring our prestige.”

Hudson gladly accepted the folder that had been handed to him, flicking through it as he listened to her continue to speak. Her portfolio was, to say the least, impressive and there was no denial that she had a repertoire that attested to competence in the department. It was a comforting thought that, in the face of her being determined with a seeming plethora of ideas, she had the credentials to back it all up. That was among Hudson's biggest fears; hiring the wrong people that further ran Britain's image into the ground. Hudson remained silent for a few seconds as he processed everything that she had told him, all the suggestions she had offered and a consideration on how she conducted herself. "I'd like to first agree with you wholly; the rebuilding of strong, inclusive domestic policies in the face of Minister Fitzgerald's is an integral connection to that of our international image. I will pass your suggestions of some domestic laws onto the relevant departments. Though only an interviewee, the potential they have paired with the necessity of some of them such as the abolition of the primitive registers cannot be ignored." Such things had been on his list of things but the sense of urgency from those who worked in the Ministry was all the more motivation to do it; it showed that they were behind him with a similar view of things. He lent forward a little, elbows resting on his thighs as he cleared his throat. "That being said, no matter how intrinsically linked foreign perception and domestic affairs are, your role as Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation would be much more globally based. Whilst you would naturally have a role in domestic affairs as all Heads of Departments do, your focus should be on the global stage. As you are aware, I'm sure, the department's role is focused on ensuring we are aligned with international standards. As I said, I understand this does mean an influence on our own laws but that is by no means an entire focus." He paused, contemplating his next words. "So far, you've proposed international events as a way to rebuild these bridges - a good idea, nonetheless - but I would like to ask you how you consider things beyond a cultural prestige. That is important and influences many other areas of our international reputation, no doubt, but there are more things. How would you handle the decline in international trade we've seen? The refusal of other governments to work with us despite giving no reasons? Some regulations such as cauldron thickness have deviated by the previous Minister. Would you keep these deviations or revert back?" Leaning back in his chair, he offered her a smile. "As I said, I agree with you wholeheartedly but our international reputation is influenced by more than our domestic affairs and you, as a prospective Head of our International Cooperation department, should reflect that. In any case, I'm more than willing to extent this interview to include the vacant department heads of more domestic divisions of the Ministry."

Eden is wordless as she considers Hudson's input carefully, alongside all his following questions. His agreement to all her points put her further at ease and made her feel more and more in her element. Prior to reaching this point, she'd been concerned Hudson's platform has been mostly a farce, but she was relieved to see that, should she receive the position, she'd be working with one of the most progressive and open-minded Ministers to grace the office. As it is, she understands her portfolio relies extensively on her ideas on a more domestic basis, but she'd been hoping he'd be able to see her point: that as it was, their domestic policies rendered them unable to do much with their international image and standing. Nonetheless, she takes all his comments in stride and places her focus on his next questions. She nods along to some of his points until he falls silent, awaiting her response. “There’s no doubt Alistair’s perception of our country’s economics was warped. His actions did us little favor, and by reverting it - as would be one of my first goals should I receive the position - I would anticipate our presence in the international trade market to become much more respectable. In conjunction with the reversion of these deviations, another priority is restoring as quickly as possible our relationships with other countries. Without doing so, we simply won’t be able to adjust to their sudden unwillingness to engage in trade with us. As I mentioned earlier - which is why the portfolio emphasizes it so much - many countries see us as one with outdated policies and classist, purist, and supremacist values. While we’ve begun the process of reversion, I implore you to consider a more consistent line of communication between Wizengamot, the Confederation, and the Office of Magical Law. Nonetheless, our inability to engage in business with any country without it harming our stock exchange continues to be one of my greatest concerns and biggest priorities as prospective Department Head,” she pauses, allowing her words to sink in. “During the period of preparation for the interview, I took it upon myself to become better acquainted with the International Magical Trading Standards Body, seeing as it’s the only office I have not worked for and would require the most collaboration with to avoid a socioeconomic crisis. Careful investigation led to the conclusion our stock exchange will crash soon if the Ministry doesn’t find solid ground to stand on internationally. I likewise came to the discovery that at the root of many of our problems is the flippant attitude we’ve developed over time towards our biggest exports and imports. Frankly, it was simply not given the same priority as other issues, which while understandable, has resulted in a repertoire of problems, the most notable being other countries’ unwillingness to cooperate. Although the Department doesn’t currently have even an interim, as Head of the Magical Office of Law, I’ve already begun coordination with the International Confederation alongside our seats to ensure the Ministry is able to seek a solution to our misfortunes collaborating with other countries. Some of the decisions the seats and I made after several meetings with the Supreme Mugwump and the rest of the Confederation were to increase the amount and frequency of some of our biggest exports: wands and magicalized machinery. We’re already seeing results. As you’ll see in page 13, we’ve already been able to reach several agreements with African countries that have allowed an easier import of many of the ingredients needed by St. Mungo’s and outlier hospitals that serve our citizens, as we were aware that one of the greatest concerns among the British people was the potential lack of ingredients for medicinal potions in the event another tragedy occurred. Similarly, we’ve been able to reach agreements with the United States that, while temporary, we hope will soon become more permanent as they see we’re taking the steps required to reach the stability most countries want from their partners. While it is sadly not enough progress to assuage the many fears of a potential economic crisis and political collapse, especially given the fluctuations in the stock exchange, it’s enough to open the doors with countries we’ve previously had positive relationships with,” It’s at that point she takes a moment to mull over her next words carefully, as she doesn’t want to seem ungrateful of the opportunity he’s giving her. “While I understand I relied extensively on my concerns and ideas for our domestic affairs, I was simply trying to emphasize the importance of reverting these laws. While your consideration is appreciated, I do not see myself working in any department outside the International Magical Cooperation. It’s what I know best, and where I know I’ll be of most use for you, Minister, and for the rest of the Ministry.”

OOC: If parts of my answer seem a little questionable, like the stock exchange crash, I did some research and realized the muggle counterpart of the dept. is the FCO, and those are some of the things they work with. I simply translated it into the office I thought best fit the description, which was the Standards body.

It was all Hudson could do but to nod along and listen to everything that Eden had to say. It was obvious that she knew what she was on about and, if she didn't, then she was amazing at blagging and coming up with stuff on the spot. If anything it was a clear indication that she was the right person for the job and that continuing the interview further would be superfluous. He contemplated the thought of giving her the position for a moment, not that he believed he needed to but it was good to review all of the information, before offering her a smile.
