Nora looks a lot like her mother, which, considering Blake's recessive genes, is a befuddling subject. She has the plain blonde hair she always keeps loosely over her shoulders, the tall stature and deep blue-green eyes that almost always look angry, but really, she isn't pissed. She just struggles with resting bitch face syndrome. It's contradicting to how she dresses, too, preferring a vibrant closet to dressing in all black. Most her sweaters are all tie-dye or with a rainbow scheme. She tends to avoid plain clothing, like undecorated jeans and white shirts, and typically sets out to only buy white clothes whenever she's in the mood to come up with a new pretty sweater. She isn't exactly known for her extravagant tastes. Her FC is Irene Ferreiro.

Nora is a part of the Schmidt dynasty; the family everyone knows about but hardly mentions anymore. A family whose stardom was their greatest downfall, who spurred studies into the implications of fame and fortune on mental wellness. One of them in particular struggled the greatest with this very concept. Blake Avalon Schmidt spent most of her formative years vying for her family’s attention. Parents who struggled to devote the appropriate time to their nine children and siblings who spent more time trying to find their own footing. She struggled for years between trying to become close with her family and find some independence, which obviously led to some questionable decisions at Hogwarts. Falling in love, getting her heart broken, leaving a trail of alcohol and hearts in her wake. She tried finding comfort in deplorable ways, and obviously, rather than helping her, it sent her down a path of self-destruction. She might have ended in a similar position as her mother Emily, if not for Roman Caesar.
He'd been aware of the Schmidt's for years now. How could he not? That family's image in regards to Quidditch was almost legendary, naturally making him all the more determined to be better than them. This was definitely the case with Blake Schmidt, a fellow beaver in Heidelberg Harriers. For years, their rivalry was documented by the media. Sure, he flirted with her occasionally, but it was more in hopes that it would get under her skin than anything. What he certainly didn't expect was running into her at the pharmacy and finding out she was planning to overdose. Though he did take the rivalry seriously enough, he didn’t take it seriously enough to turn her away. So he convinced her to go get a drink with him. Then another one, and another one. He didn't really have any experience in this area, but he figured he could give her something to do. He didn't ask why she planned it; she'd tell him if she wanted to. None of his business, really.
Roman still holds they took way too long to get together. They were only an official couple by the third date, though he’ll assert it was the 300th date. Part of him wanted to badger her for the next step, but he didn’t want to push her into something she didn’t want, so ultimately, he let her decide. By the fifth date, the public had found out, but he found out a week after the news broke out from a mate of his. He couldn’t care less. He was there for the sport, not the fame. When it came to the other family members, he liked them well enough, but even to this day, he doesn’t know who’s who. That’s okay! He just calls them Schmidt. Unfortunately for Nora, this applies to his own children as well. The next gaggle of Schmidts, all the result of Blake and Roman’s high libidos, poor impulse controls and lack of condoms. That said, they did snowball after getting together. By 21, he proposed, and a few short months later, they eloped. Not long after came the first positive pregnancy test, followed by another, another, and another.
A lot of people thought Roman would bolt, unable to take the responsibility. For a while, he considered it. He was terrified of messing up, that he wasn’t ready. Also, his parents married quickly, what happened if he and Blake turned out the same? However, he had made a promise to himself long ago that he wouldn't turn out like his parents. Plus, he couldn't leave Blake for his own selfish reasons. Could you imagine her moving on and dating someone else? No thanks. In reality, Blake had Roman wrapped around her finger and he was following her wherever she went. Germany, America, North Korea, Hell. He'd follow her there. He'd buy her 100 puppies if she wanted, honestly. This feeling of being trapped, however, didn't last. Finding out they were expecting a little girl (Nora), it was enough to change his outlook on life. He continued playing Quidditch, but he was grounded, rooted right next to Blake and his unborn child. The day Nora was born? It was the happiest day of his life.
Growing up, Nora has had everything she has ever wanted. Her family was functional, and for her formative years, she was as close as close comes with the rest of her family; aunts, uncles, cousins, the whole gang. She was known as a social little girl, looking to spend all her time with the people she idolized. Even as a child, prior to realizing there were better ways to bond with her extended family, she valued her time with them and did what she could to always be included. It wasn’t difficult. The Schmidts had improved drastically between Blake’s childhood and Nora’s, and there was a culture of actually supporting one another and not letting one slip through the cracks. The time shared between them was precious, but like all good things, it came to an end. Blake and Roman relocated to Germany so Roman could play for the Harriers and Blake could coach, which essentially marked the beginning of the end. There was a period of time where the family never spoke. The relationship between Nora and some of her cousins withered away, until eventually, all she had were the friends she made in primary school. Nobody meant to drift apart, but it happened. They grew different ways, and while Blake tried to keep in touch with everyone, they all had their own families to care for.
Nora was six when her magic manifested. It was a long time coming and, growing up surrounded by wizards, she was excited for it to happen. It was a let-down that it was a small incident - fixing her fan after it broke - but it unlocked a whole new world for her. She became a lot closer with her father by consequence, as he tried passing his passion for Quidditch onto his daughter. Unfortunately, she didn’t have that same passion. As a matter of fact, she hated being on a broom. She did then, she does now. Even when her family moved to the States, the same year she’d have started at Durmstrang, she didn’t pursue Quidditch or even Quodpot at Ilvermorny, much to her parents’ chagrin. She nurtured a love for the arts instead. Painting was a lot more up her alley. At least it was a calm extracurricular, safe by all means, even though everyone had expected something more from her. But, well, at least she got sort of used to being a disappointment. By the time she was in her fourth year and everyone had realized she wasn’t going to be some insane Quidditch prodigy, they’d left her to her own devices.
It was a little hard accepting she was a let-down Schmidt, and to be honest, it didn’t get any easier from there. Try as she might, friends didn’t come easy to Nora. She was German, had the thick accent that refused to wane, she spent most of her time rambling about artists and the stars and classic authors, and really - who wants to be friends with her when her more athletically inclined siblings are all right there? It was a no-brainer, and while it felt horrible, she grew used to it. She embraced her differences and honed the skills she did have. Unfortunately, these skills don’t include potions-making. She’s always been abysmal at it, from the moment she started her academic career at Ilvermorny. By consequence, when she was left unsupervised to try a more advanced potion - an Everlasting Elixir of Greek origins - that involved spellcasting. Unfortunately for Nora, she was completely unaware these spells needed to be cast as they were written originally, and when she went ahead and tried to consume her potion, thinking it was all fine and dainty, she ended up facing disastrous consequences. Her taste buds, for one, were completely burned off, and a lot of the nerves in her mouth were shot for months until St. Mungo’s was able to revert the damage.
The only effect they couldn’t revert - as the potion had somehow targeted exclusively her senses - was her sight. It wasn’t bad at all! She couldn’t see too far now, and she’s colorblind, mixing up everything she sees. It was a tough transition, and to be honest, it still is pretty difficult. Nearly a year later, around the end of term, Nora once again failed at a potion she was trying to make for her Potions class. She accidentally ended up contaminating the air and poisoning everyone in her classroom. A full year of fourth years, just dropping like flies. It was an accident, no doubt, but needless to say, Ilvermorny refused to take her for the next semester. Fifth year was important, and Nora was, frankly, a mess. By that point, she’s fully expecting her parents to tell her she’s going into home tutoring. She wouldn’t be surprised. To be honest, she’d be grateful, if anything, but it’d still be a reminder of how inadequate her magic is, and how, ultimately, she’s average at everything she does, if not under that. She still remembers the look on her parents’ face, the resignation and slight frustration, but they weren’t mad, at least. Nora got off really easy, actually. She’d have to retake Potions over the summer, before she started her fifth year at Hogwarts.
It took Nora by surprise, and some of her siblings echoed that sentiment. Hogwarts is a big part of their family’s history - hell, all of the UK is - and they were willingly moving there? As it turns out, with Roman’s retirement, they were looking to finally, permanently settle, and with some of her relatives still living in England, the decision had been made before Nora even realized. She’s a little scared, truth be told, especially since she can’t remember the last time she saw any of them, but it’s bound to be interesting. If there's anything to look forward to, though, it's meeting the woman she's named after and the girl she's been exchanging letters with for the past year.
