Personality

Paul is smart and optimistic. He attempts to look at the world positively, even if he knows the full horrors of it. His intellect and thirst for knowledge has no bounds, having learned nine languages and mastered four. He will go to great lengths to get to the bottom of a mystery. He is curious, and has developed a habit of asking questions when he doesn’t understand something. Meaning, even in the wrong circumstance, he will ask a question. Some could equate him to an honest puppy, and sometimes he probably does come off as a little dumb.

Paul enjoys sharing knowledge, and pondering the philosophical. Why does music give humans orgasmic sensation? Why do humans believe in the unexplainable, even if there is no way to back it up? Ask him anything of the sort, and he will be open to discussion. While some may consider him innocent, his dark past tinges this sort of newborn attitude he tends to have. His training never leaves him, so he can be dangerous. Aside from that, he has an intense fear of needles, stemming from the amount of testing he went through while younger. When it comes to emotions, he doesn’t know how to deal with them, and tends to lean on the pragmatic side.

This leads into his social ineptitude. He’s traveled the world, met a billion people, learned languages, understood cultures. What he hasn’t done, is made a real friend. Even Ted is more of an instructional father, rather than a friend. This can lead to much confusion about social cues,, emotions, how to deal with other human beings, etcetera. Had he not been a lab rat, he would have probably still been an introvert, but the fact that he had both aspects can make him an unappealing conversationalist. Similarly, with this frustration that does come from not being understood, he harbors darker emotions that he can’t put a name to, but knows they exist.

History

When your parents are muggles, and you aren’t, things tend to get complicated. Such is what happened with Paul and his dad. Sometimes, military joes don’t do the greatest things out in the field, and for that reason, Jason Lang was discharged dishonorably. Jason then went and got a girl pregnant upon return, and what do you know, Paul was born! Naturally, the girl wasn’t about to keep him, not that she could since she died during childbirth, so it was up to Jason to raise him. A hardass ex military, obviously Paul had some rough years as a tot, where he was disciplined to a T. Even so, he did have a sort of childhood, and he did go to the playground, doing regular, normal child things.

Unfortunately for Paul, he was a wizard. One way or another, he had to express it. His first pop of magic came at the young age of 5, where he finally had a temper with his dad, who was about to hit him with a belt. The belt stopped in midair, only to return and whap Jason. If you thought things would get better after that, you’re wrong. Jason felt he had some sort of monster in his house. He had no qualms with giving him up to the military, on a trade deal of changing his discharge papers. Everything was kept hush hush, as the U.S. military did have other children captive (maybe 4) for the same experimental reason. As they were shipped off country to evade humanitarian laws, and it was a newer development in the CIA, MACUSA could and did nothing of it. It isn’t as if they knew anyways, most of the children had no family or were unloved.

Now on an island off the coast of central america, Paul’s childhood took a drastic turn. He went through two phases in his life:test subject, and weapon. The facility tested his powers, his range, tried to see if they could box it in. When nothing seemed to work, they deemed him inhuman, using this ethical reasoning for molding him into a weapon. Almost like some sort of spy thriller, they trained him into a killing machine, as well as giving him reading material to keep his mind sharp. However, despite the new freedoms, he was still a prisoner, and all he knew was how to obey.

Around the age of ten or eleven, MACUSA got a tip off about the no-maj wizard facility, from an escaped child who caused a ruckus similar to a natural disaster. While they had no jurisdiction for entering the island, as it was not part of the U.S., a few wizards went rogue and saved the children kept there, as well as obliviating all no maj’s. They tried to assimilate the children as best they can, however, because of the drastic environmental change, instead, each child was tasked to care takers able to teach them how to assimilate. For this, MACUSA attempted to cooperate with other world agencies.

Paul ended up in a home in Madrid, Spain, living with an american named Ted. Resistant to authority at first, Ted finally began teaching him about magic, and life. Due to the one tracked style of learning he had prior, Paul craved all kinds of knowledge. At some point, he even managed to convince Ted that it would be best for his education to travel across the globe. Paul learned about foods, languages, and bits and pieces about cultures, besides the general magic aspect. His year spent with Ted,however, never granted him the full capacity to interact with other humans, as Ted was his only speaking companion. He would have been fine staying socially disconnected, had his examiners not felt his magic was lacking quality. By that time, they’d moved to London, so the most logical choice they could make was for him to jump straight in, by transferring to hogwarts. While capable, the two agreed he should be put in a grade lower than normal, so he can have more opportunities to learn social skills. When the school year begins, he will enter fifth year. Before entering school, Paul changed his name to distance his identity from that of his dad’s.
