Ariana is the result of a love potion and there's only so much one can do when you are unable to feel love in any capacity. Apathetic, Ariana is convinced she's a psychopath. Of course, she doesn't mention this to anyone but she knows something about her is amiss. She's just not sure what is wrong with her. Ari finds herself going to extreme lengths to feel anything, even if it runs the risk of hurting herself. It's not that she wants to hurt herself, she just...wants to feel something other than dull emptiness. Feeling alone and separated from everyone else, Ari knows something is wrong with her. And it's a lonely feeling, isn't it? Not knowing why you feel a certain way but knowing you're different. Whilst she may not be able to feel any love, genuine love, some emotions are somewhat felt. Loneliness, remorse and sadness are emotions that come in small waves but they can be quickly shoved away. Easily forgotten. On the plus side, this meant that she really doesn't have anything holding her back when she wants to tell someone something. She can see a situation without any bias or personal afflictions and do what she thinks is right. Which, yes, does risk her throwing someone she's close with under the bus. The one good thing she's good with is magic. She likes seeing results come out and actually feeling like she's good at something.
The foundation of the Magical Kingdom of Italy is often seen as controversial when compared to the more humble origins of the United Kingdom and Japan’s institutions. King Umberto I was never a man of education, nor did he regard his predecessor Vittorio Emanuelle II and all his loyal court officials with due respect. It was his wife — his first cousin, Queen Margherita — that was well-versed in European literature, with an intellect praised by the Italian populace that helped her husband maintain the favor of many. Nonetheless, in spite of the Italians’ staunch support towards her, historians to this day argue Umberto I never cared for Margherita, making an example of his torrid affairs with courtesans and handmaidens of the House of Savoy. His inability to commit is ultimately what led to the premature culmination of the empire he was striving to reestablish, but more importantly, it made him the father of the man who carries the title of Savior of the Magical Kingdom of Italy, his bastard son Benedetto di Savoia.
His mother Magdalene Fontanelli was one of Margherita’s ladies-in-waiting, and was often recognized as one of Her Majesty’s closest allies within the royal court. But even with all her promises of fealty, she was subject to Umberto’s insensitive needs and gross touches, and it led to the procreation of her only son early in 1872 — just four short years after Umberto and Margherita were wed, while the former was still the heir apparent to the throne. For his part, Benedetto never thought to establish a claim to the throne growing up, understanding very early on that he was born out of wedlock from his father’s cruel dislike of his wife as compared to his mistresses. But as rumors began to run rampant in the streets of Italy following Umberto I’s coronation, and upon the confrontation of then-Prime Minister Benedetto Cairoli, the King was backed into a helpless corner; risk losing more support by neglecting to acknowledge the growing negative sentiments against him, or claim Benedetto as his second son. Seeing no risk as he would not be due to inherit the throne, he took a calculated risk, sending Magdalene into exile to protect the truth of Benedetto's heritage.
To this day, the decision he made continues to befuddle the few royal historians that know the truth of Benedetto’s heritage; why not send the bastard away to quell the rumors? Or, alternatively, why not summon some royal staff member to lay claim to Benedetto? Even Magdalene’s eventual husband Leopoldo Majocchi would have proven to be a better cover as compared to risking the stability of the young Italian Monarchy by including in the line of succession an illegitimate son raised outside the limelight. Nonetheless, Merlin would have it no other way, and Benedetto would then be exposed to the pressures of living as a legitimate member of the House of Savoy. With the new exposure, he learned the intricacies of any royal family, and was quickly tamed and polished to become a successful Duke one day; if, of course, no other suitable matches were made to cement the Italian family’s rule in other countries. However, as time went on, Benedetto expectedly began to develop his own ideologies and feelings on what a King should do, including what kind of image he should carry throughout all his royal commitments.
Worth noting was Benedetto’s dormant magic — he was only 10 years old when the Triple Alliance was established with Germany and the Dual Monarchy, but the growing disapproval of the alignment with Austria-Hungary put Benedetto at risk of personal, vindictive attacks against the Crown. A handful of hired muscles tried to put an end to the apparently ridiculous moves made by the Italian government and launched a preemptive strike against the Quirinal Palace; it was foiled by the guards of the royal palace, but Benedetto had been present, and all the fuss had triggered his dormant magic. Word never did get out — the King made sure of it himself — but it marked the start of Benedetto’s resentment against his father, the religious institution that would one day anoint his older brother, and most importantly, his intense urge to establish a dichotomy between the wizarding and non-magical world. Exorcism after exorcism wasn’t enough to put an end to Benedetto’s increasingly volatile magic, and just when he was about to be stripped of his titles and exiled — or murdered, he would argue decades later — he was given a reprieve in the form of his first magical tutor; Ernesto Bernetti.
Ernesto was a close friend of one of Umberto’s fiercest allies, and the promises of making his son’s sinful acts stop — acts the King presumed were punishments of a higher deity for being born from sin and raised as a false prince — were enough to earn him the truth of the Monarchy. As promised, all vicious manifestations of magic — the exploding lamps, the raging infernos in the middle of the night, the random changes in temperature — it all came to a screeching halt when Ernesto took the young Benedetto under his tutelage, teaching him what he was and how he could control his powers. Ernesto taught him the art of spellcraft, and often took him on trips to little pockets in Italy where the biggest magical communities lived, shunned and outcast by neighboring communities for one reason or the other. The sight and knowledge fueled a deep rage in Benedetto, which he would come to nurture until he struck against his father in 1896. A major point of conflict for Benedetto had been the government’s reliance on organized crime, being staunchly against the horrors of the Mafia, and even more the colonial expansion his father seemed set on.
Benedetto could foresee the end of the Italian Monarchy if his father continued down this warpath, and although he wanted to do nothing more than to change his mind, his older half-brother — the heir, that is, Victor Emanuelle III — had different ideals than him. For all intents and purposes, he was on his own in his pacifist endeavors and commitment to piecing together the fragile communities they already ruled as opposed to mercilessly colonizing islands and cities overseas. The point where Benedetto knew action was needed — beyond the ruthless persecution of magical communities he had come to love and protect as part of his royal responsibilities — was the disastrous Battle of Adwa in Ethiopia. The claims for the monarchy to be abolished in favor of a republic became more powerful, and it was at that point that Benedetto really understood his father had gone, for a lack of better words, mad for power. He wasn’t supportive of how the King worked with Francesco Crispi, keeping him in his pocket and continuously interfering in governmental affairs, nor did he support the authoritarian rule that bypassed Parliament. Wanting nothing to do with the imperialistic ambitions of the muggle counterpart, Benedetto worked arduously with Ernesto to establish the Magical Monarchy. It was all done quickly as Benedetto relied on his charisma and the trust he’d already established with outlying villages and towns where magic thrived, and established somewhat of a “mirrorworld”.
Accessible only by magic through various points of entries in the form of hidden doorways, statues and even small, seemingly abandoned buildings and sheds, Benedetto created the safe haven that the Italian magical community dreamt of for eons. He exhibited compassion and understanding towards the fragile communities, and became increasingly involved with the needs and demands of his people. His monarchy was established as a constitutional monarchy, and although there was an underlying fear he’d become a tyrant, he was entrusted with creating a rigid dichotomy between those with magic and those without. The constitution was quickly drafted and elections for the first Prime Minister were soon held. Henceforth, all royals would be barred from becoming involved with the government personally or romantically at risk of losing their place in the line of succession and all other titles bequeathed by the Crown. Benedetto soon became a lost memory in the minds of the muggles, and where the muggle monarchy failed and was dissolved, the magical House of Savoy thrived. There was no magical involvement in either World Wars, and all conflict their muggle counterpart lived was theirs to handle; the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy was honored — revered, even — and the Old Religion swiftly became normalized and openly revered. For the first time, Italy — or at least the magical side — knew what peace was.
His reign lasted 78 years, until his peaceful death in 1974. Immediately, his granddaughter Vittoria became queen, and her coronation took place the summer after his passing. Regrettably, her father Alberto passed away in 1970, assassinated in what was the only attempt at a coup by bitter nobles who sought to clinch more power they felt should be theirs. Her reign, like her grandfather’s, has thus far been peaceful and free of any pressing conflicts pertaining to the royal house. Italy wasn’t involved in either Wizarding War, but instead briefly became a home to many immigrants who feared persecution as muggle-borns and half-bloods. The Italians welcomed them all. As Queen Vittoria I’s reign approaches its end, however, the family has become subject to gossip. Her oldest son, Prince Stefano, died during the Scrofungulus pandemic of the 2020s, thus making her oldest granddaughter, Margherita, the heir apparent. However, Margherita died in a tragic splinching accident on her way to a royal function. She died on the scene at age 58, making her son Pietro the heir apparent. Her death has been subject to great speculation.
Conspiracists claim it was a ploy by the abdicated Prince Amedeo, who felt wronged by the monarchy for not approving of his marriage to former Dark Arts practitioner Maria Cittadini. Some have gone as far as to claim he worked with Princess Clotilde, who they say felt envious of her sister for overshadowing her coming out and subsequent marriage to her lady-in-waiting Emilia Bellesini. All claims are equally ridiculous, but many are adamant in “uncovering the truth”. Regardless of their commitment to making such discoveries, it leaves her oldest son — Pietro, Prince of Piedmont, now — as the heir apparent of a Queen whose health seems to be declining further with every passing day.
Ariana's birth wasn't quite as conventional as one can hope for. Not that sh's aware of this. It happened at a ball with some low level duke was hoping to cause enough controversy to damage their reputation. Unfortunately, it didn't quite go to plan. The plan was to make Alfonso infatuated with one of Margherita's close friends and the duke thought he found her hair brush. Instead, he had found Margherita's that she had lent. Which meant that when Alfonso drank the spiked goblet, the potion caused him to become infatuated with his wife instead. Which meant, nine months later, Ariana was born. Of course, they didn't know what had happened so they couldn't have come to the realisation that their daughter wasn't quite as 'normal' as they might have initially hoped. As any child of a love potion, her own emotional capacity was stilted to the point of nonexistent. Growing up, Ariana was a calm baby and whilst people thought it was grand, her parents were truthfully a little worried. What baby virtually never cries? But no doctor could tell them what was wrong. Growing up, Ariana was the definition of apathetic. She was non-caring to all the splendors around her, didn't blink when her Christmas presents reached the ceiling, couldn't care less when people used her to gain benefits. She'd just drop them without a second thought. Often people thought her a spoilt brat, when in truth she just...couldn't care. She was an early bloomer when it came to magic, though. Just before her fifth birthday, she made all the food on the table swirl into the air before coming back down. She got all the good stuff.
Surrounded by royalty, Ari has rarely ever lifted a finger to help those around her. It was an easy upbringing plagued by the lack of emotions. Part of Ari knew there was something different about her but she never knew what or why. Everything, when they talked about love, seemed so foreign to her. Like she knew, deep down, that wasn't something that was ever intended for her. Of course, no one knew about this for the first eleven years of her life. It was after she went Beauxbatons that the duke responsible was caught and admitted to his sins. Her parents put two and two together and realised the truth of Ariana's situation. They decided not to tell her. Let her be ignorant to her own affliction.
During school, Ari was only able to do so well socially. She wasn't able to feel love which meant that her ability to connect to people on a genuine level would only work so well. She knew what she was meant to do. She interacted with all the appropriate people and gained friends. But she found herself not caring whenever they moved on from her. There was one friend who passed away in her third year. A flying accident. Ari just...didn't care. She didn't cry, not once, and was able to move on easily compared to the other kids around her who suddenly had their first experience with death. Ariana, on the other hand, was non-plussed. One thing she did thrive on was magic. She took to it like a moth to a flame. She was able to perform magic years ahead of her time. It came to her easily. Of course, she could never produce a patronus. Happiness was founded in love so how could she, someone who cannot truly feel that be able to produce one? She had no happy memory to pull from. The reason she transferred to Hogwarts? Honestly, she doesn't really care about the reason. Apparently there'd been some dark magic being practiced by other students. She's not sure why it's enough for them to move school but rumours were beginning to build that one of them were involved. Funnily enough-it was true. Ari had gotten involved. It seemed interesting and she wanted a magical challenge. She didn't want to hurt people. Of course, it was all covered up and whilst there were rumours on which of the royals were involved, no one knew for sure which of them was caught practicing dark magic or if it was even true at all. Now, entering seventh year, she's been relocated to England and maybe Hogwarts will be a little bit more interesting.
