There are battlements all around the top of the Quad (or Paved Courtyard) which serve as defense lines when invaders or enemies attack Hogwarts. Inside, there are catwalks which connect the whole place and there are passages leading outside the battlements. The Viaduct Courtyard can be seen, and somewhat protected, from here.
