Edmund and Emily[]

 – Is there some reason that my coffee isn't here? Has she died or something?

She was in her room when she heard the door slam, from Ed's direction. Deciding to take the matronly course of action, she walks to his room, omitting a knock and letting herself in. "What's happened?" She asks softly. "And what's that smell?" She wrinkles her nose.

She purses her lips into a sarky smile, and sits on the bed. "And why would Arthur be burning Aeron's shoes?" She asks, knowing full well that 'Arthur' here was really Edmund.

"Of course." She says nonchalantly. "However, I refuse to believe that such an act could have happened unwarranted. Unless you know the reason, Ed?" She tries to keep her voice level, even though she feels off about the situation

She looks at him sternly from behind her thick-rimmed glasses. "Edmund." She says firmly, but not harshly, "What did Aeron say to you?"

She ponders. "I can't say I blame you." She muses, her lips twitching into a coy smile. "Ed, mein liebe," She says softly, gently running her finger through his messy hair to try and pat it down, "He was wrong. To call it a life choice, to place a bet on it - that kind of behaviour isn't what I'd have expected from him." Isn't it? Either way, how would you know, you barely raised them. She thinks, but shakes her head to herself. "But when you fight fire with fire, all that's left to show is the smoke. Pollution." She explains, "I'm sorry you had to hear what he said." She couldn't think of what to say, and she cursed God and herself for not being good enough.

She shakes her head, "Give him time, Ed. Some people learn by experience. He'll realise his mistake. You know him, and you know he just needs to learn." She says, trying to ignore his question to her. "Me? Why wouldn't I be?"

She smiles, though she can feel her eyes welling up. "Oh, Ed.." She places her hand on his cheek, "You sweet, sweet young man." She smiles sadly, "I have no one to blame but myself. Perhaps if I had been a better mother, you wouldn't have to be afraid of being who you truly are."

She swiftly wipes a falling tear, and pulls him into a hug, "Edmund, I am so, very proud of you." She whispers, "And I hope you know that even if the whole world turned their back on you, you'd still have me." She says, "Also. Please take that shower soon."

She smiles, "For you, mein kind, anything." She stands up. "I'll let you get on with that swim." She says, before heading for the door.

"I won't say a thing, Ed. Don't worry." She smiles from behind the door frame.

Edmund. She doesn't know if he's alive, if he's dead, or just what the fuck. Because he abandoned her. He walked out on her and the rest of their family when they needed him most. To be honest, she'd felt he was the most detached from their family, yet she'd never have thought he'd turn his back on them - or at least her - when she needed him most. He was her guide for a long time, she loved him and looked up to him, but now, when she knows better, she can't help but feel bitter. His drive to stay away was most likely her fault, one way or another, and it angers her. It fills her with self-hatred... except it also doesn't, because she's reached a point where numb doesn't even begin to describe her. She feels nothing. Absolutely nothing other than overwhelming sadness. She loves Edmund dearly, she has no other choice but to accept it. Even with his faults. Lord knows she has a lot of her own. She remembers their talks, especially late at night, when nobody else was around... and her pain doubles. This was her brother, for God's sake. He didn't deserve this. None of the other Schmidts did. Her... well, that was another issue altogether.
