The whole concept of nature vs. nurture is something highlighted in Siobhan’s key personality traits. Although she inherited her parents’ extrovertedness, she wasn’t exactly raised to be as open and immediately accepting as she’s turned out to be. She was always raised under the idea that the burly guys with the big cameras were mean, and anyone who started asking a lot of questions wasn’t someone she should trust. No doubt, it carried some weight throughout the years, but ultimately, her need to make other people happy and comfortable overruled everything else she’d been taught. It still does, actually; she’s been known to compromise her own integrity if it means she can prove herself as someone tirelessly reliable, supportive, and more importantly, the ‘exemplar’ or ‘go-to’ girl in all she does. She knows better than everyone she has really big shoes to fill, so proving herself as someone who can do anything that’s expected of her is really important to her. Her parents really aren’t hard on her at all, but still, she feels like she has a massive responsibility to be as good of a person as she thinks her parents were; smart, kind, caring, supportive — O’Shay traits, right? In spite of it all, there’s a certain loyalty that comes with being Siobhan’s friend that’s pretty rare. Yes, she has a lot of issues to work through and habits to break, but she has a heart of gold.
If there’s anything else that’s worth underlining about Siobhan is that she isn’t necessarily the smartest person when it comes to social interactions. Sure, she gets consistently perfect marks, but the whole thing that she should know how to interact with other people because of all her exposure? Nope, not true at all. Siobhan is naïve at best. She’ll trust the first person that waltzes into her life and makes her smile. She doesn’t believe people can be bad, and has it stuck in her head that she can fix the world if she really sets her heart on it. Siobhan is very impressionable; you can walk all over her and stomp on her heart, and she’ll still take you back. She’s just as submissive, too. She has a voice and she knows it, but going from knowing it to using it are two completely different things. She’d rather let herself be led than actually lead anyone. She’s self-conscious enough about herself. What if she says the wrong thing or accidentally hurts someone? She wouldn’t really forgive herself if she cost herself any friendships, so she’d much rather be under someone’s thumb, where she knows she won’t cause any trouble at all. Not that that’s much better — she tends to take everything personally, and suffice to say, the times she’s ended up curled up in her bed crying are more than they should be.
If you ask Siobhan, there’s no universe where Kevin and Tori don’t find their way to each other. She thinks their love story is the type movies are inspired by. Come on, they were best friends in school who fell in love, joined the same professional league, and went on to play internationally and win several world championships. Isn’t that just so perfect? What Siobhan doesn’t know is that it wasn’t always as idyllic and perfect as her parents have thus far made it out to be. The moments that really cemented Kevin and Tori’s love were the quiet moments of intimacy in between all the happy times, when they were at some of their lowest points.
It was when the clock struck 2:03am and Tori found her way into Kevin’s bed because he’d become all she had. It was when Kevin felt overwhelmed with his traumas and Tori was able to bring him down from the cliffside. It was when they both felt like their lives were spiralling but clung onto each other for a semblance of normalcy. It was when they spent their time rifling through old muggle movies and starting their own traditions together because they were each other’s only family. Tori and Kevin were always destined to end up together, no doubt about that, but the foundations of their relationship were the friendship they had long before getting together.
Kevin and Tori really never thought they’d make it as far as they have. The odds were against them at every point, but then they found each other and they found their best friends; the Very Gay 7, as they’d been called many times. That network of undying support paved the way for their success, building their self-confidence until they reached a point where they felt they could conquer the world. Tori’s first endeavors as an adult were motivated by this network of support, joining the Holyhead Harpies as their star chaser, whereas Kevin had been scouted by the Ballycastle Bats to be their starting seeker. Their lives were barely starting and it all looked so promising. Their relationship, so new and fragile, was contested by this new world they were in.
Surrounded by more wealth than they’d ever had, with more exposure to new people and potential relationships, it was initially a little hard for them to juggle their monogamous relationship and all these new opportunities, but they powered through as they could. They had no doubt they could achieve what was pretty much labeled impossible by mainstream media, but everyone else was a lot more doubtful; it’s why the quidditch world was so shocked when the news accidentally leaked that Tori wasn’t medically cleared for her second season on grounds of an accidental pregnancy.
Kevin and Tori… honestly didn’t take it well at first. Kevin had lingering fears about what kind of father he’d be, considering his own experiences, and Tori was similarly worried about how to be a good mother when she was so estranged from her own. The nine months that followed were pretty nerve-wracking; no amount of support from their friends was enough to assuage their worries that they might not be good enough for their child, but what every parenting book said turned out to be pretty fucking true — the second they had Siobhan Valentina O’Shay in their arms for the first time, all those fears melted away. They were a family now, and no matter what happened, they’d always be a family.
There on out, they decided to take life one day at a time, devoting themselves to being good parents while now managing their careers as athletes. Tori was back on the pitch as soon as she could, as was Kevin, and between them and the VG7, the O’Shay-Torres trio was unstoppable… until they stopped being the O’Shay-Torres trio. Kevin knew objectively Tori was who he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, but do you know just how much anxiety comes with planning a proposal? Not that he even had a reason to worry — he ended up proposing on Christmas, two years after Siobhan was born. Their life was all a little backwards and everything was moving so much faster than they had anticipated, but their lives had turned out so uniquely them that it really didn’t matter. The spring that followed, they had an intimate ceremony with their closest friends and family.
Siobhan doesn’t remember her life being anything less than perfect. Going to primary, accompanying her parents to either the Ballycastle Bats or Holyhead Harpies’ practice, spending her Sundays with her family; no matter what, she can’t really remember a time where she was ever unsatisfied or upset. The only moment that really stands out to her is Aisling and Fionn’s births, when she was four years old; the little shitheads just had to come in and make her life miserable.
She’d been doing so well, spoiled rotten by her family and being able to sneak into their beds every night, but then came the twins and all hopes of always being daddy’s little girl withered away. Peaceful naps with daddy became nightmare hours with daddy and brats. Mother-daughter outings were interrupted by the twins dirtying their diapers every minute — it was horrible. Really, she doesn’t recommend the experience to anyone. As a matter of fact, they’re the reason her magic was triggered. Imagine Kevin and Tori’s panic when they come into the nursery just to realize their babies are gone, and Siobhan is looking smug as all hell. Yeah, Siobhan is still grounded because of that. (“Which shouldn’t have been a big deal! I just apparated them to the closet, with a blanket and everything!”) Everything has its silver linings, though, and this was no different.
Little League Quidditch was something Siobhan was really looking forward to, and as it turned out, she wasn’t the only one. One of her most vivid memories is the first time she ever rode a broom with her dad; he hauled her onto his broom after winning the World Cup and did a couple laps with her. Ever since then, she’s been unstoppable, and to the surprise of nobody, she dominated the league as a beater. She decimated everyone on the field, and she hopes that now as she joins Hogwarts, it’ll be no different from the (hopefully) Gryffindor Quidditch Team.
