It was inevitable for a loveless marriage to turn rotten and for the De Rege family, they were no exception. Marcus De Rege and his wife Serena were both offsprings to what used to be two rival gangs. The origin of of these two gangs were a mystery and while they weren’t huge in the sense of media, they were sure to cause quite a bit of chaos to Florence and to each other… they were rivals after all. It wasn’t until Marcus and Serena, one child to one gang leader and the other a child of the opposing gang leader, married that the foes joined forces and became comrades. It wasn’t an easy transition as one would guess, considering all the bad blood between the two but, over time thing settled and the two forces cause havok together.
Thing never did settle down for Marcus and Serena though. Considering their marriage was an arranged one, the two were considerably unhappy. While they kept up a good front, out of fear of both their fathers, behind closed doors was a whole different story. For the most part, they’d completely ignore each other but of course, there were those days they couldn’t keep their feelings bottled up and would simply explode - breaking out into a full out argument. It was difficult being part of a marriage where you didn't love the other.
Over time, both their fathers began to push for an heir to their organization. They were just building after all and while Marcus was next in line, he needed someone to take after him when he was gone. So, their fathers pushed and pushed until finally an heir was provided but, Serena was not the mother to this heir. The two couldn’t bring themselves to sleep together so Marcus went and conceived a child with another women, though, the idea was orchestrated by the both of them. The plan was to have Marcus’ mistress, a women he had been seeing for a while now, birth a child for the two and pass it along as their own. Of course his mistress wasn’t a person with the best moral core so, when they offered to pay a great sum of money - she happily agreed and disappeared from their lives, leaving her child. The name of this child was Dimitri and like his father, he was a muggle.
Everyone ended up happy... even Marcus, who now had a son. Everyone except Serena of course. She was still trapped in her marriage and while Dimitri seemed like a good child overall, he wasn’t hers and slowly it tore away at her. She was no longer living life but instead, only existing in it and this was something Serena was set out to change. And so she did… The young women ventured off without her husband and found things she loved to do and things to keep her busy and from home. She even found a man, though their love was forbidden, and was swept away by his romance. His name was Leonard unbeknownst to Serena, a muggle, he was a pure blooded wizard. Serena was quite aware that she shouldn’t be crossing the line but, she couldn’t help herself and soon, she found herself pregnant by him. Naturally she was terrified, she cut off Leonard and in an attempt to hide her affair she tricked Marcus into sleeping with her and making him believe that it was their child Serena was carrying. What else was she to do? Run? That wasn’t an option in the situation and Serena decided to do what was best for her and her unborn child.
So, Serena carried the child to term naming him Stephano and as planned, Marcus was fully deceived into believing Stephano was his own flesh and blood. Some would say that for a while Stephano brought the couple together in a way they had never been before. They seemed happier and while still not in love, they seemed more at peace with their situation.
Growing up for Stephano wasn’t much different than the average childhood. He learned to walk, read, write, and despite growing up around the gang, Serena tried her best to keep him away from it all. It didn’t strike up much argument from Marcus either as all his attention went into Dmitri. I guess in a way you could say he favored Dmitri over Stephan and at time neglected to even pay the slightest bit of attention to him. Things were good for Stephano, growing up with the love of his mother but, things were bound to come out sooner or later.
Despite Stephan’s mother being a muggle, his father was of wizarding decent and unluckily for Serena - her son took after his biological father. Stephano was eight years old when he had his first magical encounter and it was a good thing only his mother was around to witness it. They were in the family garden planting flowers when Stephano asked his mother when they’d bloom. Serena smiled at her son and of course explained the process of how flowers grew. Stephano understood everything but, he couldn’t help but want to see them bloom right then and there. Without even knowing what he was doing, the young wizard cause the plants to grow quicker and bloom. His mother was awestruck and well didn’t know what was going on. Was it her son that had just done that? And if so, how did he? Naturally lacking the answers to any of her own questions, Serena asked her son to not do that again - at least until she figured out what was going on.
Determined to find answers, Serena researched anything she possibly could but, of course came up empty handed. How was she supposed to find answers that only lied in the wizarding world after all. Feeling defeated and at a dead end, the young women could only think of one thing to do and that was to contact Stephano’s real father. It was a lot easier to find him than she had originally though, considering Leonard’s phone number was still the same after all these years. After explaining everything to him, Including keeping Stephano a secret, the two met up and he explained everything about Stephano’s ancestry and the world he belonged to. While most would probably think the man was crazy, What else did Serena have to turn to?
With this new information, Serena packed up her bags and fled with Stephano, hoping to protect herself and her child. While Marcus might not have been the abusive type, she was sure he wouldn’t handle the news well, to scared of what the outcome might be that she abandoned all rasional thoughts. With her own savings she kept in cash, Serena fled to England to begin a new life and to give stephano a chance to learn of his world.
And so Stephano did, considering he got his Hogwarts letter at the age of 11 and started his years there. The young boy really had no information on this world aside from the little his mother had told him so, he was at a bit of a disadvantage. Though, after being sorted into Gryffindor, he began his studies and made few friends how helped him along the way as well. Thing we’re ok for Serena and Stephano’s little family and they were quite happy. Stephano being able to grow into his preteens happily before things began to go downhill.
It all started when his mother fell ill one afternoon. Immediately she was taken the the hospital and unfortunately was told she had cancer. When the cancer appeared, no one knew but, it was in a stage where it was incurable and she only had a few years a best to live. Stephano was fifteen years old when this happened and only 17 years old when Serena finally succumbed to her illness and passed on.
Stephano was left all alone when Serena passed and because of this one would assume he’d go straight to an adoption agency but, Marcus was still alive and well and because of this - The young man was sent to live with his “father”. Marcus was caught off guard just as much as Stephan, considering he never thought he’d see him again. At this point, Marcus had figured something wasn’t right and had his and Stephano’s DNA tested, now aware that he was not truly his son.
After that, while Marcus didn’t decided to disown him, Stephan’s life became quite difficult. He still attended Hogwarts and after his last year he graduated but, Stephan was now sucked into the world of his step fathers gang. Marcus was set on making the bastard useful and that he did. It never came to the point where Stephano had to take another life but, he was force to commit a number of crimes and learn how to manipulate people. Stephano was trapped in this world, with no way out… or so he thought.
When Stephan turned 20 years old, he was visited by law Enforcement who were investigating Marcus and offered him a deal. Stephan was offered immunity for any crimes he committed so long as he provided them with all the information they needed. After a long year of working with them behind Marcus’ back, the law enforcement made their move and arrested the members of the gang along with Marcus. Considering they weren’t that big, it was easy to bring them all in. With all the evidence provided, almost every single one of them was sentenced for life - committing crimes as bad as murder. That was the end of the De Rege gang
For Stephano, he moved back to England hoping to make a new life for himself. Most might assume he’d change his name for safety reasons but, De rege was his mother’s name and he wanted to keep her memory going. Besides, all the gang members were imprisoned, never to experience freedom again.
