The Tsarina's Private Residence

The Flat
Polina and Vasilia's Home

Following their decision to start trying for kids, the Tsarina of Russia and her wife decided to purchase a private residence where they'd be able to raise their children away from prying eyes. It's a far cry from the family's official, luxurious residences at the request of Ekaterina herself, who was hoping to raise her children in a more unassuming environment for their safety and a morre humble upbringing.

Eden Lestrange needed to give her that job because she was wanting out. Hell, she might just murder the person who gets that position until there's no one left until Drew to be chosen. She'd promised herself the last time that she'd pass off any disappearing case to some auror who wasn't her. Or Octavia. But with the break in being the Russian empress, Drew took it. It was too high profile and too risky to give it to any of the other aurors. But also, she's gone through this before. Polina Romanova's damage on Drew can be mitigated. Drew could already see an auror descending into tears if they were put next to Polina. So Drew went. And the scene wasn't pretty. Private security were dead, bar one, and the house was in tatters. Drew wasn't sure what's been taken, what's been left, but unable to contact Vasilia was weighing down on her. She prayed she wasn't gone. Maybe Vasilia had decided to take the children on a walk. But her gut feeling was telling her otherwise. They found blood on the stairwell. Not a lot, but enough to tell Drew that there'd been some struggle. She was at the front door, waiting for Polina to arrive. Aurors were rushing around the scenes. Despite what Polina wanted, it was an active crime scene. Waiting for Polina to give them the green light to go through the house for evidence would slow them down. Drew wasn't interested in being slowed down. There were magical barriers up, new ones, designed to keep out both muggles and wixes who weren't meant to be here. Polina, of course, was allowed through them. No one could see what was happening on the property, even if they were staring right at it.

Octavia had advised Drew as the co-lead to not move forward with the investigation until the consort had arrived if only for the sake of diplomacy, but she understood Drew's concerns of wasting time and inadvertently corroding any lingering evidence. So while Drew was keeping an eye out for the angry woman, Octavia was inside, taking pictures for the files and cautiously guiding the other aurors in collecting evidence dispersed throughout the private residence. What Octavia doesn't expect is to hear a loud, angry crack behind her. It's so disconcerting that she whirls around, immediately levelling her wand at the prospective threat in spite of the wards placed by her wife not even a half-hour earlier. She trusts her, but it's better to err on the side of precaution, right? "Who — oh. Your Highness. I, uh — I thought you might have been —" Octavia is interrupted by a shove aside, which grates on her nerves and tears her ego down just a tad. But hey! This is Polina's home and her wife could be dead, so. Octavia is willing to ignore that for that reason only and not because the Russian consort intimidates her. Octavia sighs, jerking her head towards the front door so the auror standing there gaping like an idiot fish gets Drew. Not that she thinks it's necessary; she'd be surprised if Drew hadn't heard her arrival.

Polina pays absolutely zero mind to anyone in the house. She dodges the aurors expertly, weaving through every hall and ignoring the splotches of blood and bodily fluid on the stairwell in her endeavors to reach her final destination. She passes the nursery, the bedrooms, and it feels like almost a lifetime before she finally rests her eyes on the concealed compartment inside one of the supposedly unused rooms full of boxes. It had all been a deterrent in the case there was an emergency like the one today. Her heart is racing and Polina feels sick to her stomach. The only thing that assuages that horrifying sensation just a little is the heartwrenching cries of her children as she undoes the incantations placed by Vasilia. The little wails become louder as she uses her wand to reveal the tiny compartment with the four sleeping children. Her sigh of relief can be heard ten miles away, she's pretty sure, but she can't bring herself to care about the vulnerability she's displaying as she pulls Alyosha and Nadya out first and brings them into her hold. In her panicked state, she knows she shouldn't make an effort to pick up Lena and Lida yet, so she settles for comforting her oldest and youngest first, who seemed to be the most distraught anyways. "It's okay," she breathes out, holding them both close to her chest. "I've got you." Her mind is running a mile a minute and Polina can't bring herself to do or say anything because she just can't stick to a single thought. Somewhere in this house are Drew and her legion of aurors, and Polina realizes the hidden compartment is now compromised so they'll have to find a new hiding place if not an outright new house, but that will have to wait for the time being. "You're safe now."

Of course Octavia followed Polina. She doesn't know what to think of this case yet, but watching how panicked Polina had been until she located her children, Octavia couldn't help but feel that it was a genuine rection. There was no way she could be involved; not from what she sees on the surface, at least, but... it's hard to ignore whose daughter she is and what she was involved with in her youth. While Polina seems distracted with the crying children, Octavia glances at Drew, trying to make out what the other woman might be thinking.

Drew couldn't miss the crack and instantly moved into the house. Nodding to Octavia in acknowledgement (she ignored Dubois), she followed the consort to the room. She didn't bother interrupting her, she wanted to see exactly where this woman was going. The children. All four. All safe. Drew wasn't quite a maternal person, not naturally anyway, but even she could feel a little bit of relief. Better an adult to be hurt than an infant, let alone four of them. However, she could assume two things easily. One, that that spot was a predetermined location to hide them and, thus, the next assumption based on common sense was that they'd been placed their on purpose by the missing empress. Which didn't make the feeling in Drew's stomach become any lighter. Drew could feel Octavia's eyes on her, could feel the question in the air, but Drew couldn't jump to that conclusion. She'd just hired her sister, Drew had to think that Polina didn't have anything to do with this. It wouldn't make sense. Unless she wanted regency. Get rid of the kids later down the line. Drew pursed her lips. It didn't make sense. But even then, Drew wasn't crossing it out. Still-she had to go on the assumption Polina wasn't in on this. She met Octavia's eyes and mouthed 'trust'. "Your highness," she said after a moment, letting Polina have her moment. The words were thick on her lips, wanting to just call her Polina, or even just Mrs. Romanova. Drew was a lot of things and prideful was one of them. She struggled calling Eleni Yaxley 'Minister' let alone someone 'your highness'. Drew knew about the recent threat. She'd had an auror looking into it but they had come up short, even with who had sent it. "I don't suppose you'd be alright with answering a few questions?"

"As a matter of fact, I would prefer not to. Your auror department does not have the best reputation when it comes to solving missing persons cases with swiftness." Polina is trying to be polite, but it's taking a lot of willpower to not kick Drew and everyone else out immediately. She asked for one thing specifically for the safety of her children, and Drew couldn't even respect that. She might not have known, but it should go without saying in any investigation: be aware of your surroundings. And she wasn't. None of them were. "You did not wait for me like I asked you to, and it could have triggered fail-safes that would have killed your mighty department. Your men did not locate any wards or incantations placed for the safety of my children. How can I expect you and your incompetent band of children to find my wife and return her safely? She is not some commoner; she is the Tsarina." Polina pauses, taking a long breath. She's seeing red, and while she can claim diplomatic immunity, she is not so sure it applies to the murder of two aurors. "I will have my men search for her independent of your investigation," she warns, "Do not allow your men to interfere, because I promise you, Auror — there is nothing I am not willing to do to ensure my wife's safe return. The last thing either of us want is the untimely deaths of your own." With that out of the way, she settles Aleksei and Nadezhda back in the carrier they had been in and pulls out the small basket with the still-fussy-but-definitely-calmer girls. She secures her grip around both before standing up, clutching onto them to the point her knuckles are becoming white. "Follow me." She avoids going back down the stairwell, instead turning towards the nursery to place all four in Aleksei's crib. There's a brief pause while she fishes her phone out of her back pocket, dialing a number and bringing it to her ear immediately. Some Russian words are exchanged, but the call finishes quickly. When she turns back around, facing Drew, she elaborates: "Timofei Romanov is coming. Let him in and I will answer any questions you may have."

"The same men who are currently dead outside?" She asked, her eyebrow slightly rising upwards. "Or men with the same of skillsets as those men currently dead outside?" Drew was long use to this. Doubt on the departments capabilities. But all the previous missing people cases had come back successful. No one was dead. Eyeless and traumatised, perhaps. But they were all alive. So she might actually say she has a good track record. "Previous missing person's case have often been children doing something reckless. This case is rather different, I think it's fair to say. We've already been investigating potential culprits, culprits who might be involved with this one." She didn't need to say it. Say that working with each other might save time. Polina wasn't an idiot. "All we want is to ensure your wife is safe and secure. We have the same end goal. I assumed the house would be safe considering nothing had gone off when the culprits had gone through it. I think it's easy to say that they didn't really leave this place untouched, with the exception of this room." Everything was a mess. Even the private bedrooms had clothes thrown around. Draws smashed open. Mirrors broken. When Polina pushed past them, Drew released a breathe. Good. Drew can work with this. She followed Polina, her eyes darting around the place, checking to make sure she didn't miss anything. Not even the smallest of details. The mess of the house told her one thing: they were either looking for something or covering their tracks. Probably both. "The sixt-" she stopped. Yeah, okay. She'll take it. "I'll give him his name to Dubois. First question–who knew this address? I'm assuming everyone in the family, but everyone outside of the family? Who knew." That was Drew's first question. She knew this place was well under wraps. No one knew their private address. Only Drew, Eden and Eleni knew in the ministry.

Drew knew a Spencer but the chances of it being that one was so small. "Getting ahold of them as quick as we can would be the best route of course. Polina is gearing up to reply to Drew when something catches her attention. She closes her mouth, eyes narrowing as she cranes her neck towards the doorway. "Someone is coming." Polina probbaly should look more concerned, but — what? Did you really think Drew's spells were the only ones wrapped around this entire residence? She knows who it is the second they pass the barriers. She should probably warn Drew, but — eh. She's a big girl, she can handle herself. "...I don't think his number will be necessary."

Bypassing all of Drew's protective wards is easy for someone who worked overseas specifically countering curses and charms. Luckily for Spencer, he is such a someone, and because two and two equal four, he's coming in prepared to demand answers. He recognizes some of the aurors in the residence, but pays them little mind — except that one sneaky bastard that tries to jinx him for trespassing. The resulting crash against the front door probably broke evidence protocols, but Spencer's primary focus is getting to Polina. He walks the unfamiliar halls, ducking and dodging spells that narrowly miss his magically erected shield, and finally sees Drew several rooms down. Anyone who doesn't know who he is might be confused — alarmed, even, labelling him a suspect trying to shred apart any remaining evidence — but Drew and Polina will hopefully know better. "Romanova!" he shouts, realizing in that moment what he's truly walking into. "I know you're in here somewhere!"

The loud ruckus certainly drew Octavia's attention towards the hall the man was coming from. She didn't stop to look at Drew, immediately drawing her wand to deal with what might very well still be an active threat against the royal family. It's bad enough the empress is missing; they can't get the heirs, too. Seeing Spencer barrelling towards her is alarming, and she quickly casts a Stupefy! to hopefully at the very least throw him back.

Octavia is a minor inconvenience at best, and her laughable attempt at the stunning spell does little to deter him from reaching what he knows to be the storage room. "Protego!" The sudden shield diverts the stunner, but it's the subsequent "Stupefy!" that gets Octavia out of his way. He recognizes her, but it doesn't look like she recognizes him, and he doesn't have the time or patience to mind his manners. Ana is gone and, sure, he didn't realize Vasya was gone at first either, but now that she is, he finds himself even more concerned than he had been earlier that day when he found out about Ana's disappearance.

Polina can't see Spencer yet, but the commotion downstairs and just out the room is a dead giveaway of the man's arrival. She smirks for a moment, but before she can make a smartass comment, her children's new bouts of hysteria force her attention elsewhere. Polina's eyes flutter closed for a moment and she takes a deep breath. Where is Timofei when she needs him? Shaking her head to rid herself of the temptation to kill Spencer, Drew, Octavia and Tomya, she hovers over the crying infants, gently stroking Lida's head to soothe her a little. "You may want to go deal with them first, Auror." Polina pauses for a moment, before adding: "Do not kill him." She will need Spencer's help to find Vasilia.

She recognised the yelling almost automatically and she took in a deep breath. She was going to kill someone. Hell, she might just help Polina kill them, including herself. She took in a deep breathe, eyed the crying kid, before turning on her heel. Polina had her hands full, quite literally, and she could already hear another baby crying from the compartment. Maybe the other one will start crying, if Drew was lucky. Descending down the stairs, the first thing she sees is an unconscious Octavia and instantly her hand went for her hand, ready to curse the person to kingdom come. Then she saw Spencer and she froze, before her lips pursed in cold fury. "If you don't mind, Darling, could you stop jinxing my wife?" She asked. "Before I have you arrested. This is an active crime scene and you cannot just come barging in." She paused, taking a look at him. "You're upset. Why are you upset?" She didn't know why or how Spencer knew Vasilia but maybe, potentially, he knew something. "Unless you know something about what happened here." Drew was holding herself back from jinxing him but she decided to just focus on Octavia. From what she remembered, Spencer Darling wasn't too unreasonable. She bent down to make sure Octavia wasn't too hurt. It didn't seem like she was, but she could have hit her head. Calling over Dubois, who seemed to be bleeding herself, she quickly said 'mungos' and the two disappeared. Better safe than sorry. And if Spencer Darling was about to go on a war path, then she was wanting Octavia well away. Then she turned to scowl over at Spencer. "You can see Polina, if I know you're not going to tear her limb from limb. If you're wanting to see Vasilia, well...." she trailed off before gesturing to everything. "You're too late." He was an auror. Once. Drew knew that wasn't ground to trusting him. However, Polina implied that she did. And Drew worked with him a lot back in the day. She trusted her gut feeling. "But you better spill what the hell is up with you before I send every auror I have on your ass for disrupting a crime scene and attacking my aurors."

"Hi" He said from behind Spencer, holding a bowl with a fish in it, "I was said to come for the kids." He was surprised he got here this quickly. But Van Der Hoek let him use her fireplace and he appeared in the fireplace and only a drop of water escaped the bowl. He'd gotten a lot better at it. He was staring at Spencer's back, deciding this was the man who had a hand in hurting Vasya. "Where did you take my cousin? Auror, he's coming to finish the job. Could you arrest him?" He asked, leaning around so he could stare at Drew.

She hated children. She really did. However, she couldn't send Tomya to Polina without letting Spencer know where she is. "Go wait in the kitchen," Drew said instead but Tomya didn't move. Oh, right. Spencer's eyes narrow into slits as Drew comes into his sight. "What happened to Vasilia?" he presses immediately. This is connected. All of it. It has to be, and he's fairly confident Polina is the common denominator. Her wife and estranged sister? She must have pissed someone off real bad, and Spencer is still not sure whether to kill her for it or use it against her in hopes of it leading to finding Ana. "I'll jinx whoever the hell I have to if it means someone here can tell me why the hell Ana's missing, too." He doesn't expect Drew to recognize the name alone, but his shouts should be enough to catch Polina's attention and bring her down. He imagines she has the kids — those wails are too annoying for her to not have them — but he's almost certain that's what Timofei is here for. "Can you go get your cousin's damn wife, kid?" he snaps, turning towards Tomya for once. He'd go up himself, but he knows he might hurt her, and he draws the line at traumatizing children. When he notices Tomya won't move, he turns to Drew. "Deputy Healer's gone. Kidnapped. Polina has to know something."

Instantly, her mind went back to that morning when one of her aurors had tried to tell her something. However, she'd just found out about the break in and had been such a rush to leave, she put off whatever it was. It had to have been this situation. Fuck sake. Drew closed her eyes for a brief second before taking in a deep breath. First thing first-"move, kid," she said, almost a hiss, and this time Tomya did kick into action but Drew almost wished she just made her and Spencer move. He began to move but, naturally, he tripped of his feet, the fish bowl going up in the air, the water and fish spilling out. Luckily, nothing hit the ground as Drew quickly cast a spell so everything froze before the water (and fish) shot back into the hovering bowl that Tomya could grab when he recovered. With a mumbled 'thank you', he shuffled past them and up the stairs. Drew didn't say anything more to the kid. She waited until he was well out of earshot before addressing Spencer again. "Why would Polina care about a deputy healer?" She asked. She didn't know the connection. Not that she believed Spencer, but remind her to check Polina's whereabouts before she came here. "There was a break in. Polina wasn't around and Vasilia's disappeared," she summarised. "But give me a damn good reason why I should let you anywhere near an empress that you'll be accusing of kidnapping her own wife based on nothing but her past." Drew was a big supporter of people making their own path. Their own identity. Not based off the situation they're born into. God knows she can't exactly judge people on where they're born. Maybe that's why she's so willing to believe Polina didn't have anything to do with it. It didn't make sense. Have a hand bringing down her own family to marry this girl and then, just as the girl gives birth to their kids, goes and kidnaps the girl. She was missing something if that was the case. But she did agree on one thing-this was connected. Two disappearances in one day? No way they weren't. "Why do you think Polina knows anything? And don't give me hunches, a gut feeling, actual evidence." Drew frowned over at Spencer, he looked like he was going to go on a war path and Drew wasn't sure if she'd be able to stop him.

Tomya followed the crying. It wasn't hard to find his cousin with the children. "There's, um, there's a man down there. He says you know something about a deputy healer going missing," he said, blabbing instantly because Polina's the only familiar face right now and he doesn't know anyone else and so he's going to be hiding behind her for the remainder of the day with the children. "And he says he's going to jinx everyone and anyone until he finds out why Ana's missing. I think she's the healer." He put the fish down onto a table before shuffling over to pick up one of the kids that Polina didn't have. He was here for the babies. He knew that.

Polina isn't happy about Spencer screaming up at her, but that's the least of her concerns. The cogs in her head are already turning, trying to find a pattern, establish a link, or at the very least come to some logical conclusion. Yes, she and Vasya have hired Spencer before, but they've never directly dealt with the healer. It's all very perplexing, but Polina is sure they can figure it out; they don't have another option. She isn't going to lose her wife because she couldn't do the one thing she's been trained to do since her childhood. It's already bad enough that she very clearly failed to protect her like she vowed to do years ago and endangered Vasya's life as well as their kids'. Vasya had had a gut feeling, and Polina should have run with it. She should've disappeared with them all while she had the chance, and now she was being forced to live with the disastrous consequences of her ineptitude. She's so on edge that she almost hexes Tomya when he approaches the nursery, not trusting anyone that might present themselves to her right now. Drew and Spencer are on thin lines as it is. Still, she does sigh in relief, passing a crying Nadezhda to her in law. "My little sister Ivka will be coming soon to help you. Stay in this room and don't open the door for anyone. Anyone comes in, you hex them, Tomya." She doesn't think it needs to be said, but erring on the side of precaution is all she'll be doing from now on until she's dead and cold. Even when she exits the bedroom, shutting the door behind her, the number of incantations she places on the door is truly remarkable; nobody is supposed to be able to get in sans Ivanna, and even then, her sister may need to contact her before entering the vicinity. (Which, good.) Not thinking twice about what she's doing — she might otherwise regret leaving her kids alone with a teenager — she reappears downstairs where she knows everyone to be, only to —

The second Spencer's eyes land on Polina, he's lunging forward, grabbing her by the collar of her blouse and shoving her against the wall. The sound of her head smacking against the thick wall would usually be of concern to Spencer, but in his blinding fury, he can't bring himself to care about the consort's wellbeing. "What the hell did you do?" he whispers, barely restrained anger coloring his tone. "Anastasia Petrova is Anastasia Tolstokozheva. She didn't want you to know, but you must've pissed somebody off for her to get kidnapped." Before Polina can react, he slams her against the wall again. "So I ask again, who the hell did your freak family piss off to get her kidnapped, Romanova? Or was it you, hm? Was this your own clever little way of whisking your wife away? Maybe drag Ana along, try and restore your family's ghastly reputation?"

Spencer might have taken her by surprise, but Polina will swear up and down it was only because she was distracted by the stains of blood all over her staircase. But the anger he's radiating? Polina doesn't take kindly to it, and the knee to his groin is well-deserved in her humble opinion. So is the subsequent Flipendo, sending Spencer straight through the door and out of the house. Polina is enraged at this point. He comes barging into her home because of the trust her wife has in him, and he has the gall to come and blame her for her disappearance? Suffice to say, the tempest jinx becomes very useful, and the bolt of lightning she summons to crash into him is a bold enough statement. "I did not have anything to do with your healer's disappearance," she snaps. She aims her wand at Spencer glaring at the blond. "Accuse me of plotting against my wife one more time, and I promise you, Darling, it'll be the last thing you ever do." She heard the whole Ana is a Tolstokozheva remark, but Polina will not deal with that right now. She can only handle so much, and facing the reality that her dead twin sister has been alive all along is not something she'll take lightly even after her wife has been safely returned.

Drew had been going to intercept them when Spencer lunged but, as a subsequence, was shoved back into a table, a vase falling off and shattering into the ground, a piece cutting the back of Drew's hand and she cursed as pain shot through her. The cut was what distracted her enough that she didn't stop Polina from jinxing him. Hell-she would have done it herself. Maybe not that painfully. Pulling out her wand, two quick spells left her mouth. Incarcerous and expelliarmus. One for Spencer, the latter for Polina. She wasn't going to get in international trouble for shooting ropes at an empress, albeit a very murderous one. Then again, if they either try anything more, she might kill them both herself and send herself to Azkaban. The plot twist here would be if it was Drew who had been the one plotting all along. Maybe she should. Show the criminals how to do it properly. "Now if you're done comparing d-ck sizes," Drew hissed as blood dripped down her hand and onto her own suit and ground. She was getting properly angry now and she might just arrest them both. Put them both in holding cells to protect them from each other. "I'm going to sitting you both down to interrogate. Particularly you, Darling. Because killing each other isn't going to help either of them. It's just wasting time and they could already be dead. So before I arrest you both or send you both to an early grave myself, I suggest you both shut up because neither of you are my priority. The empress and the healer is. Meaning I really don't give two fucks what happens to either of you outside helping me with my investigation. Got it?" She was about to snap. Was either of them going to be impressed with what she just said? Probably not. But she'll stand by her words.

Spencer looks like he's prepared to retaliate, but at the very least Drew seems to actually be taking both matters more seriously now. That's Spencer's main priority in order to find Ana, so he wises up, shutting up and nodding to signify his agreement with her words. He glares at Polina and, willing himself to not lunge at her again, tries to climb back onto his feet slowly, bearing in mind the restrictive ropes tightening around his torso with every move he makes. His body feels all hot and tingly, but a last-minute attempt at a shield spell had protected him from the brunt of it all.

Polina has no qualms with killing Spencer. She doesn't care what Drew has to say; she can't be arrested as far as she's aware, and she can't imagine Drew would be interested in being the cause of an even worse crisis for Russia than the Tsarina being abducted. She'll do it with her bare hands, too. She doesn't need the wand Drew successfully confiscated. She returns his vicious glare with one of her own, but the words that leave her mouth aren't addressed to him. "Somewhere private."

Drew looked at Spencer with a slight frown before deciding not to drop the spell. Not until she's confident he won't try anything again. "Come," she said eventually, deciding to trust them both enough for neither to do anything serious. "They've moved out of the library, we'll be alone there." Again, Drew wasn't the biggest monarch and, as of right then, she'd might have even forgotten she can't really boss an empress around. What a shame. With that, she turned on her heel and walked through the hallways. If either of them tried anything with her back turned then so be it. That was on them. But she had the feeling they wouldn't. Finally, she pushed into the small library tucked into the house. It had Vasilia written all over it. Books scattered around, most if not all classical books, knitting materials on a table in the corner, yarn covering a chair. Compared to the rest of the house, it was untouched and nothing seemed out of touch. As if Vasilia might be coming in at any moment. Drew decided she regretted coming in here. She didn't sit down, instead she headed into the middle of the room, to turn and wait for the others to come in.

Spencer flexes his muscles, trying to work his way out of them, but he's surprised to find that Drew managed to ensnare him in a fairly tight knot. There's no way he can get out of it without his wand, unless he doesn't mind the bruises that'll last a few weeks. Since he knows there's a better way of getting out of the ropes, he resists every instinct he's developed until that point, sighing as he bends his body at an angle where he might be able to fish his wand out of his jacket's pocket. He can fish, but he probably won't reel anything in.

If Polina were anyone else, she might have cursed him again wandlessly, but she sees no point in stooping so low. No, the lowest she's willing to stoop is pushing him as she walks past him, throwing the blond back on his ass on her way into the house. She shuts the door behind her, too, and locks it; the asshole can find his own way to the library if he's so adamant on being a pain in her ass. She'll need his help, but it certainly isn't a necessity right now. So she follows Drew out to the familiar room, pointedly ignoring the pang she feels in her chest when she glances at the hideous armchair that Vasya had insisted on purchasing when they first decorated the library. It was her spot, and Polina can't stomach looking at it without worrying over what her wife might be enduring in that moment. She's trying to block all kinds of thoughts along that vein, but Polina knows what the odds are. She's spent years worrying about them. "Spencer is going to take a few minutes longer," she mentions, shrugging when Drew turns to look at her. "A contact of mine heard chatter that there was growing unrest from a clandestine organization not unlike my parents', but I cannot imagine it was them. I did not think them to be a threat when I looked into it a month ago, and I still do not. They did not have the resources." Polina pauses for a second. She knows what Drew must be thinking, and it's more than likely for the best that she cuts that line of thought before it makes the investigation harder. "I was in the supermarket when you contacted me. There are witnesses and cameras that have me there for the past hour. And Darling — he did not have anything to do with this. He and I do not see eye to eye very often, but my wife is like a sister to him, and he would likewise never allow anyone to harm someone he values so much." With the more pressing information out of the way, Polina continues. "The other senior royals, are they safe? Aleksandra, Dmitri, Mikhail, Nataliya — are they okay?" There are more, but she can't pretend to care about all of them. It's just not realistic.

Drew stared at Polina for a moment, honestly deciding that Polina has probably decapitated him, what has been decapitated? She's not going to ask. She has other priorities than a big mouthed man. Even if she did work with him once upon a time. Drew took mental notes of everything Polina was saying. Remind her to check the supermarket just in case. She was thorough. "Don't suppose you'd be willing to share your contact with me?" She asked, "if they know anything about it. It could be useful." Fucking secretive. Why? Why can't they just run around in public and make it easier for her? This world was cruel, truly. No matter–nothing, or no one, remained secret for long. She had a feeling Ana Petrova was going to come to that same conclusion soon enough (if she were still alive). "We've sent an auror to check on them. There's more than we expected and, from what I'm hearing, Mikhail is a little hard to reach. But I do not have a definitive answer yet. However, sometimes no news is good news. Nothing has been called in. Regardless, I am able to offer you protection. A safe house and all that. For each of the family members in England. Twenty four seven protection from aurors. It will mean that you're all under strict lockdown in the one house but at least you know where everyone is."

"They both hate getting involved with aurors," she warns. At the mention of Mikhail, the corner of her lip twitches slightly. "Your people will not be able to reach him. As I just said, he hates getting involved with aurors." Admittedly, Yaska would likely be more willing to engage with them, but she would prefer to keep him as far away from this as possible. If what Spencer said about Ana is true, then her own family may be involved in bigger ways, too. She doesn't want any of it getting back to them or, Merlin forbid, Ivanna. "If I were to agree to that, your men will probably not last long," she adds. As much as she hates the idea of putting them all in the same place for so many reasons, it's easier on the aurors (and the family) if she concedes. "But if you are truly willing, then yes, I would agree to it, so long as I am excluded from the safe house. I do not want to know where it is and I do not want to be in it. Worst case scenario comes to happen, I would prefer to not be a liability."

Right. So Mikhail is somehow knowledgable. Of course he is. Why is Drew even surprised? Why is no one in this family normal? "Then I'll trust you to keep me up to date," Drew responded, a slight emphasis on trust. If she stabbed her in the back, Drew would throw Polina to the wolves herself. "Maybe that's why I won't be assigning men to the house," she said. This...was a slightly inappropriate time for a joke but she took the opportunity anyway. "Would you want your children to be there?" She asked as she pulled out her phone to pass this along. She was getting a list of the Russian royals in England so it wouldn't take long to gather them all. "Your sister's pregnant, isn't she? How far along is she?" She didn't keep up with pregnancy announcements. She didn't have the time for them. She didn't care. "So you think it was this organisation that sent that threat?" Drew had been looking into it but her aurors had been getting dead ends. "How long is he going to take?" She asked, looking behind Polina at the door. If he was taking his sweet time then Drew was going to throw him all the way into the Indian ocean.

The joke doesn't amuse or impress Polina. As a matter of fact, if looks could kill, Drew would be twenty feet underground. "Her son will be born next month. Any stress might send her into early labor, so please, do not put her under more stress than necessary." Vasilia would kill her if anything happened to Aleks' baby. Aleks could try, but the damage wouldn't be lethal. Vasya, though? No, she would rather ensure nothing happens to her sister-in-law and unborn nephew. "No, my children will be staying somewhere else. Keeping so many royals invites another tragedy to happen and I would rather they stay as far away as possible from all this." Polina's patience is waning, and she quickly pulls out her phone as well to shoot Ivanna another message. Polina pointedly ignores all questions about Spencer and the remark about Misha, instead focusing on her on-topic questions. "Are you deaf or simply dumb? I said I did not think they were the culprits," she snaps. "It has to be someone else, and I feel inclined to think Spencer would know just who."

Speak of the devil! The door swings open to reveal a very disheveled Spencer, looking adequately enraged by Polina's little stunt outside. He's no longer being restrained by ropes, and his hands are curled into tight fists in a successfull effort to quell the urge to bash Polina's head against the wall. He lingers by the doorway for a few seconds until he feels calm enough to step forward, meeting them in the center of the library. "Have you figured anything out or are you two just pretending to be models?"

Morally, this idea was terrible but Drew one day would like to become a legilimen. Just so she could knock out the people she's interrogating and just go through their mind and skip the entire conversation. "No, I was waiting for you to stop waiting about," Drew remarked, ignoring Polina for Spencer now. "Now–care to catch me up on what the hell happened with you?" She asked, "or are you going to keep me ten steps behind you until I have to catch up to kick your ass. Or are we sitting here with no idea on who has the two missing victims? Because unless either of you can explain to me why you'd be useful to me outside of being family members, then I'm going to need you to both stand back and get out of my way so I can do my job." Drew's eyes finally left Spencer before beginning to scan the room again and again. The whole house was ripped into shreds, but this room.

"Ana Petrova was born Ana Tolstokozheva, presumed dead as a young child after parents Ruslan and Anzhelika conspired to have her killed by throwing her off a cliff. She spent years working for a clandestine organization that prides itself on anonymity until she broke free as a teenager, but beyond that — it's an anarchist group. They don't have set ideals as far as I know, but then again, I'm not exactly privy to much information. Ana has been working for some time now from the inside to bring it all down, which is what I initially presumed had her abducted. I made the connection to Polina given her history. At best, I imagined she'd be able to get me in touch with her parents to see if they had any involvement, and at worst... well, let's just say I wouldn't put it past Her Imperial Highness to fall back onto her shady ways. But with Vasilia kidnapped as well... I'm starting to think the chatter your boy caught was a cover-up for the real thing. This group wants the monarchy destroyed. To what end, I don't know, but Ana was specifically trying to find out more and put an end to it." Spencer grits his teeth. "She didn't get too far, clearly."

Charming. "We'll be looking into the parents," she said at the end of it, glancing over to Polina briefly, "I assumed that they've been in prison in Russia but I'll look into it to see if this has remained the case." Drew paused. "However, until I find any proper evidence, I'm not going to be suspecting Polina. I like to think she wouldn't go out of her way to help aid the kidnapping of her wife for a second time round. In regards to this group, to summarise, you and Ana have been working alone to try and end them...without telling anyone?" She took in a deep breath. "My previous statement about not dealing with children has been retracted," she said, though this was directed at Polina. She ran a hand through her hair. "Okay, fine. We can work with this. Do you know anything else? Do you know what Ana was working on next before she was kidnapped? Tracking down potential suspects, locations, anything like that? Is there anything that we can work with." She paused before frowning even further. "Were you there when she was kidnapped?"

Polina might be partly focusing on her phone, arranging accomodations for her children, but she's paying very close attention to the conversation unfolding in front of her. She's keeping mental note of all these recent developments, already making a very specific note to look more into this supposed sister of hers. Spencer has no reason to lie, but Polina finds it hard to believe what he's claiming to be true. "They're supposed to be rotting in prison," she affirms, sounding casual for someone so on edge. Trust me, she's one more blip of information away from having a breakdown. But she holds on. For now.

"I know their old hide-outs," he replies, nodding. "She liked waiting until I was gone or asleep to work on it, and it wasn't until recently that she brought me in to help. I was there, but she took a knife for me and I was attacked from behind. It was an ambush; neither of us stood a chance." Doesn't mean he likes admitting it. "Not sure how active they are anymore. Drew did a small once over, as if she'd see any glaringly obvious injuries. Drew had a small suspicion that, if he were properly injured, he'd be ignoring it in favour of trying to save this mysterious sister. "I'll get you too come to the office, so you can give us the locations and we can go check it out..." she trailed off before looking at Polina then back at Spencer. "If..." this was a stupid idea but....Drew had no doubt that both of them would be a small army alone, let alone together. "If you two can work together, I, or my partner, will be in touch so that both can aid in–" she was cut off. The second she heard it, her jaw snapped shut. It was an alarm. A muted, muffled, alarm. A phone alarm. Her head whipped to the sound of the source. It was coming from the chair, covered with the knitting supplies. Drew almost, almost, didn't believe her ears. When she got to the chair, her hand was going to rip everything off it to get to the phone but then paused to look over at Polina. She probably would appreciate it if it was her rifling through her stuff when she was right there. Of course, Drew was happy to do it–she just couldn't promise being gentle. Whoever was to go through the couch, they'd find a phone. Vasya's phone. An alarm (titled 'feeding time') splashed across the screen. When, and if, it was unlocked, it'd go straight to the camera with the recent photos being one slightly blurry image but another was taken from the landing, looking down onto the stairwell below. You could see the features of one man, though there were two figures in the photo, ash blonde hair and hawk-like features.

Polina appreciates the fact that Drew can use her brain at least a little bit. When she realizes what her brain is trying to process, she moves before Drew even thinks to react, pocketing her phone to pick up her wife's supplies. Her face hardens, her expression tightening and becoming stoic as she reads the alarm's label. Fucking hell. Talk about timing. But if it's already feeding time... that means Vasya has already been gone for at least two hours, going off the quadruplets' feeding schedule. Polina can taste the bile rising up her esophagus, and she swallows uncomfortably. She should have never left them alone; this is going to haunt her for as long as she lives. She should've known better. She did know better, but she disregarded her own experiences and knowledge. She had been playing a risky game ever since they moved to the UK, and it was only a matter of time before her lapse in judgment cost her everything. Only when she turns the alarm off does she realize how overheated the phone is against the palm of her hand. Polina's brow furrows. She unlocks the phone with her fingerprint and quickly notices the camera pull up on the screen. That's not what catches her attention, though — it's the preview of the gallery on the bottom corner. The picture isn't what she would expect (i.e. a sweet pictrure of the kids or an embarrassing one of herself), so she taps on it out of curiosity, a growing sense of dread rooting itself in her stomach. "Do you recognize him?" Her voice sounds rougher than usual, tight with anger and frustration, and it sounds foreign even to her own ears. She tosses the phone at Spencer, trusting him to not drop it.

As expected, he catches the soaring item. Looking at the picture, the man seems vaguely familiar — more than likely from one of Ana's files of suspects — but he can't pinpoint who it is on the spot. "The whole thing is built on not knowing who the hell you're working with," he reminds Polina. He extends it to Drew, figuring she would appreciate being clued into what they're talking about. Drew looked down at the screen, staring at his face, trying to pinpoint him but came up with nothing. "No, but I'll run him through the system," Drew said, as she goes through the recent apps, just in case there was anything else. The most recent was the messaging app, a list of messages trying to be sent to Polina but all came back as a 'failed to send'. Then Drew pocketed the phone. She knew she should put it in an evidence bag but–it was something that she didn't dare risk getting lost or broken. Better to keep it on her. "Still–it's something to go off." At least Vasilia wasn't a pillow princess and wasn't crying in a corner when it all went down. Drew was moderately impressed. Moderately. "Now, the search is nearly done. An hour more, at tops. Had Polina been told two years ago she would one day be entering her private residence carrying four slumbering newborns, she'd have been very incredulous. Looking back, she'll be the first to acknowledge that this wouldn't be happening if not for Vasya's endless patience and love. Between the traumas of her past and a general fear that she wouldn't be able to provide the needed security and love a child needs, Polina had decided very early on she didn't want kids. Why continue the Tolstokozhev line? And then came Vasya and knocked all of her walls down and disproved every last one of her insecurities. Just how her wife manages to do it once and yet again, she isn't sure; she's convinced it's her own little type of magic. In any case, it was that trust placed in her that enabled her to really overcame her concerns and all lingering fears that she wouldn't amount to the expectations typically placed on not just a mother, but the mother of an heir to an entire country. Although there were nights she'd wake up drenched in a cold sweat, worrying about the logistics of adding not one but four vulnerable infants into their complicated lives, all of the fears and concerns she had melted away not more than two days ago, when she held her wife's hand through surgery to have all 4 of their children. It had been risky, but they were home now, and honestly? Polina kind of wonders how she could have ever worried about hurting these four little things all wrapped up. She wouldn't admit it openly — not that she had to; something tells her her wife already know exactly what she's thinking even though she isn't the one training in legilimency — but she's already very determined to move heaven and earth for her children. Raising an heir is the least of her concerns now, because - sure, she has to put up the grossness unique to raising a boy - but this is her boy, and she has the privilege of being the one to raise him and his sisters with Vasya. Little Aleksei is first and foremost her son, and no other title will change that. The only thing changing any time soon is his diaper. Once she's set Nadezhda down in her crib — the one Vasya had her running all around the country for almost a lifetime ago — she cranes her neck, peering into her son's crib with a crinkled nose. "And so the diaper changes begin," she mumbles to herself. Aleksei is sleeping in that moment, and a part of Polina is tempted to not touch him just yet, worried it might set him off.

Polina could be the one to decide to wake him up or not-Vasya had done her part through labour and Vasya was going to milk the labour for at least two days. Vasya was still a little groggy when they walked into the nursery (which had been extended after finding out about having an extra three) but she was told this was normal. Should be fine in a few more days. Vasya had slept most of her time in hospital. Moment she gave birth to the last one, she was out. The bonding can happen when she didn't feel like she was falling through space. They'd been a few weeks early, but they were expecting this, and nothing seems to be wrong health wise with any of them. Though, if you ask Polina, Aleksei being born a boy might be considered one but it was all in jest. Though, they were concerned about Nadezhda, apparently the runt of the four, and you can see it. She was considerably smaller than the rest of them but they deemed it safe to be taking her home. Unlike the other three, though, who seemed to be content sleeping (and pray that stays that way. A choir of four babies was something Vasya was dreading), Vasya had Yelena in her arms as she sat in the rocking chair in the corner, gently rocking her, trying to coax the baby into sleep. She knew there was no way Yelena could be hungry-she'd been the last to be fed. "They're okay," she breathed out with a smile. So much stress but now everything was okay. They'll be okay and as of right now, that's all that matters. They could worry about everything else tomorrow. Or next week. Vasya was unavailable for the next week. She's already told her court that that was the case and she expected them all to keep their distance. No ringing phone. No letters. No nothing. Dead silence. Of course, they had to present the heir and all that but that was planned for the next month. "Are you feeling okay?" She asked, glancing up to Polina, knowing she probably does but she doubted all the insecurities were washed away in a few days. Sure-she could take a very good educated guess but she wasn't going to put words into her wife's mouth.

"I'm feeling like I would prefer to not wake up my son even with his soiled diaper. I'm not so sure we'll get him to sleep as easily as I just did," she replies quietly, ensuring her voice is no louder than a whisper for the sake of the sleeping newborns. She knows the true weight and meaning of Vasya's question, but in this moment doesn't want to have anything that isn't a soft, intimate moment where they can bond with their children, so obviously she doesn't delve into her emotional state quite yet. "Do you want me to take Léna?" she queries, turning her head to look at Vasilia. "You could take a nap while I watch over them."

Vasya was glad she was on the other side of the room next to an open window. "It'll be a domino," Vasya said after a moment. Was that the right saying? She wasn't sure. English wasn't her first language. Not even her second one. "Let them three sleep. Meanwhile, we can start the photoshoot with this one," she said with a grin. "And no! If I sleep I don't know when I'll be waking up. Might be knocked out for another day." And as much as she loved and trusted Polina with their children, she was half expecting the house to be on fire by the time she woke up. She trusted Polina, she just didn't trust the babies. One was enough but four of them? Chaos. She knew it would be chaos. Getting onto her feet, she flicked her wand to set it all up. "The birth announcement thing. We can do one with Léna first. I want to make sure we capture how big they grow over the months." This was definitely a high priority. Definitely.

Polina watches Vasya closely when she stands up, a little bit on edge. She knows Vasya hasn't recovered fully, and while she trusts her judgment as much as her overprotective nature allows her, she doesn't really trust that she can be stood for too long at a time after the procedure. She's just about ready to leap over and pluck her daughter from her other mother's arms. "Are you sure now is the right time to do it, moya lyubov?" She diverts her attention briefly to the new set-up, wary of the objects flying around to construct the desired product.

They'd offered Vasya a wheelchair and she'd scrunched her face up at the healer before walking out of St. Mungo's. Vasya was perfectly capable of not needing a wheelchair. She just needed to sit down for long intervals of time and catch her breathe. "Yes! We dressed them in gender neutral clothes, they're all wrinkly, so no one will be able to tell the difference between them. We can say this is Aleksei, who's going to know?" She asked as she placed Lena onto the soft blanket. The court wanted an image to give out to the public and, while they're all peaceful and asleep, may as well cross it off the list. Standing back up, she peered down at the newborn, before humming. "Does that look good?" She asked. "Or do we want to take the picture with me in it? To prove I didn't die during labour. Did you hear? One of the magazines posted an article last week to say I had. Died in labour, that is. Very tragic." She can laugh about it now but it didn't help her insecurities about labour. "Remind me to send us consolation flowers." Vasya's dark humour wasn't common but it sometimes came out when she was just a touch too tired. She was related to her family somehow.

"They're all wrinkly?" she repeats, sounding incredulous. Wrinkly or not, she can definitely tell which one is which. Then again, they're her chidren. She spent every minute they were in the hospital rooted besides them, splitting her time between staring at them and glaring at anyone who wasn't their team of healers that got a bit too close for her taste. Yelena has a small mole just over her top lip. Aleksei already has bright green eyes, which surprised her considering the genetics in question. The quiet one was Nadya, no matter where they were, and Lidiya was the fussy, mole-lacking baby. She's got them down to a T. Though she supposes the last two aren't accurate identifiers, and Aleksei could have his eyes closed during the pictures. Eventually, she relents, ignoring all her protective instincts to nod in response to Vasya's question. "Without you in it," she adds. "No offense, but you're about to become a little irrelevant, and the longer we can keep you out of the spotlight, the better." There's a pause as she processes the morbid joke. It doesn't really fly well with Polina, generating a sense of uneasiness at the pit of her stomach. She sucks in a breath and forces a smile, though. "Hyacinths, for the sorrow and anguish."

"Oh, you know what I mean," Vasya said. She had picked up on the differences between the babies, of course, but she was willing to bet people were going to overlook this. They can always retouch the eyes with photoshop. No big deal. At the idea of becoming irrelevant, Vasya paused before looking over at Polina. "None taken, I can't wait. Might even go through this entire ordeal again to make me even less relevant," Vasya said with a small laugh then she got her phone out. It was on don't disturb which meant that, at a quick glance, she could see she had nearly forty missed messages. None that she even bothered reading. At one glance, she could see that Tomya had sent a message. Probably just a bunch of well wishes. Remind her to call Aleks later. Then she took the photo. However, the moment she clicked a button, the phone slipped out of her hands and began to free fall. However, it stopped right above Yelena's stomach. Vasya wasn't that bad at magic. Nor was she usually this clumsy. The phone flew back up into Vasya's hands. "We didn't see that," Vasya said after a moment but offered the phone too Polina. "Would you, sweetheart?" Maybe Vasya should get have a cup of tea. "Are you thirsty? Hungry? I can make the cook bring something up for us in here." The room was large enough that there was a table in the corner, really it was going to be a lot of things in terms of purposes but it was big enough to eat on.
