Tottenham Court Road

Tottenham

The Tottenham Court Road is a muggle road where the Luchino Caffe is placed. There are lots of muggles here, walking the street and from here you can go to the Charing Cross Road, where you can find the Leaky Cauldron and the passage to the Diagon Alley.

Physical assemblies with the other hunters like that are a rarity. They are by no means a particularly close organisation, at least not as far as Elijah is concerned; he'll have a drink with some of the younger guys on weekends and attend weddings and funerals and other formalities as such, but that's where the friendliness typically ends. And it's difficult to organise a time where everybody can meet, and a location empty enough (in London, it never is) to discuss their actions freely. Hence why tonight was pretty unproductive. It's not like he was paying much attention, either, instead much more focused on the charmed energy of Arden's earring in his pocket, which he's extremely grateful that he brought considering he's now walking the streets of London at who-knows-what time. It's pitch black out, lit only by streetlamps and the glare of passing headlights, and catching the tube or hailing a cab would be safer but to be honest, he'd rather walk; it'll help clear his head. He's always felt extremely uneasy around the other hunters, for obvious reasons, but tonight felt- different. In the worst way possible. Maybe it was the earring, making the whole thing even more contradictory. Yeah, that must be why.

His own phone seems to be lighting up every few seconds too, mostly texts from the guys asking if he wants a lift home or thanking him for attending or - and the sight of it makes his stomach drop for a second - announcing that they've just started tracking an individual seen exiting that ramshackle old pub which Elijah recognises as the Leaky Cauldron. The frequency of which wizards and witches seem to be being found in that area hadn't gone unnoticed by Mia's father, and although the pub appeared perfectly normal to him, the connection was undeniable. That had been a talking point of tonight's meeting: speculations of a community there, or potentially a gateway to the magical world (that had made Elijah feel particuarly nauseous). He'd played along with it as usual, nodding along in agreement that yes, there is a dense concentration of wizards there, throwing the odd barbed comment in here and there. He's been doing it long enough for it to be natural. Walking along with your eyes glued to your phone screen isn't a good idea either, especially in London - you're just asking for somebody to leap out of the shadows and mug you - but he continues anyway, relying on the earring to protect him. It's not until he ends up brushing shoulders rather violently with someone that it snaps him back into reality, a few Hebrew curses tumbling from his mouth as he turns around, fully prepared with a harsh do you fucking mind when- "Divya?"

Almost immediately, he feels on edge again. The same way he feels when he's around Mia, which- no, it's not the same, it's different. The circumstances are the same in that they are both mutually aware of each other's abilities, but Mia's in the same boat of constantly walking on eggshells around her family, and it's left her with that acerbic nature that is far too similar to Elijah's for his own good - hence why every conversation descends into an argument. But Divya's different. She's actually- well, nice. It strikes him first how peculiar it is that they seem to keep running into each other, especially in busy cities at increasingly-ridiculous times, and then the reality of that sets in and his brow furrows. "I was out for a drink with some friends," he answers, a throwaway tone to his voice to make it sound unimportant. It's not exactly a lie. "Are you out here alone?" The irony doesn't bypass him either - Divya can almost definitely protect herself better than Elijah ever could himself, at least in terms of magical ability - but the thought of her walking around so late at night by herself doesn't exactly sit well with him either. Especially considering- yeah.

The comment about being trailed leaves a sour taste in his mouth, for obvious reasons, as does her skittishness around him. It's not a particularly new experience; his siblings have always been the same, at least for the past few years. Even Sarai, who has always regarded him with the most undeserved kindness out of all of them (which isn't a very high bar, considering), has a wariness to her eyes whenever they talk. He's become rather numb to it over the years, deciding to see it as a good thing - they should be scared of him if he wants to keep up the façade. With Divya- well, their encounter in Lincliff wasn't exactly rainbows and sunshine. "As should you be," he retorts, tilting his head a little as he burrows his hands into the pockets of his coat to keep them warm, absentmindedly fiddling with the earring. "I'm aware that you can probably protect yourself better than most, but you still shouldn't be out walking in the dark. It's not safe." There are no reasons the hunters would suspect her, but even they aren't always the biggest threat.

His mind is too far elsewhere to properly notice the sadness in her tone, and even if he had, he doubts he would press the issue further; home is a touchy subject for Elijah, too. Still, it's so dark and he's pretty sure the streetlamps a few paces behind him flickered out as he passed him (whether that was his fault or not, he's not sure), casting the far portion of the street into shadow and as much as he doesn't want to be out here, it wouldn't sit right with Elijah if he let her continue unattended. "If it's just a short skip, you won't mind me walking you the rest of the way, then?" he offers, voice inflected to make it clear that he's really only half-asking. It's not like he's in a particular rush - his mother will be asleep by now and if it gets too cold, he'll just call a cab. The tube is probably more dangerous than the streets at this time of night.

Elijah would be lying if he said he believed there was something behind apparent coincidences - he tends to ignore them, writing them off as chance or serendipity - but it would be difficult to downplay just how odd it is that they keep running into each other in weirder and weirder circumstances. Lincliff was unlikely enough, though he couldn't really have asked for a better person to be revealed to, but a random stretch of road in the largest city in the country beats plenty of odds. Therefore there probably is something behind it, right? Or maybe that whole thing with the astrology has made him gullible. Whatever it is, adding half-an-hour onto his journey home is the least of his concerns right now. "If I was in a rush, I would have called a cab," he points out, offering his elbow with his hand still firmly inside his coat so she can slip her arm through it if she wishes. "Come on. It will give me peace of mind, if anything."

There are a couple seconds of feeling far more relaxed once Divya agrees and they begin in the direction of her home, but it quickly dissipates as soon as she asks about his friends. Not that it's a question he doesn't have plenty of answers for, and the lie comes out smooth as butter as they walk, smiling a little to sell it as the actual thought of his 'friends' gives him no reason to feel happy. Quite the opposite. "They're people on my course at university," he explains, which- to be honest, isn't even a whole lie, considering a couple of them are. They just also share his second occupation too. "Most of them are exactly what you'd expect those taking a politics course to be like. Very opinionated, especially after a few drinks. But we share a lot of interests, and they're a good laugh when they're not arguing over the current state of UK economics." His eyes flick sideways towards Divya in amusement, a smirk crossing his face because describing them like that makes them sound hilariously dull, which is a nice alternative compared to what they actually are. "They're much better in person, I promise." Mmhmmm. "And likely quite tedious compared to what I imagine your classmates are like. The closest I've come to a group of wizards my age is- well, right now." He was about to say my siblings, but caught himself, thank fuck. "That and sitting beside Mia in class, though she's never been this friendly."

She's right, a discussion about politics would likely not end particularly well and to be honest, his own alignment is rather flimsy; growing up in a family whose fortune was made in banking leaves little alternative but to support the structures that allow it. As confident that Elijah likes to think he is, freedom of thought has never been an area he's well versed in - regarding quite literally any aspect of his life. Maybe university will radicalise him, who knows. Mia not being a witch doesn't really register with him, the comment going over his head in favour of focusing on the proceeding commentary. Hogwarts must be insane to live in. If it's anything like the frantic nature of Diagon Alley, with broomsticks soaring overhead and spells being cast as casually as breathing, it must be an overwhelming environment, one he's pretty sure he wouldn't exactly thrive in. "Ancient Runes?" he echoes, quirking an eyebrow - why runology is available at a magic school is beyond him, but admittedly rather fascinating - before the other eyebrow goes up too. "They have a child together?"

The penny drops when the full name is revealed, a name so ridiculous that it could only belong to a pet or something like that - well, he would hope so. Strange names seem to be pretty common these days. Just hearing the name Arden makes his brain short-circuit, just for a second; it makes far too much sense now Elijah knows all the details - they're both Hogwarts students, they're the same age, etc. - but the idea that they know each other makes the world feel a little too small for his own comfort and he decides to ignore that too. Ignoring things is how he gets by. Just ask his siblings. "Beautiful name," he smirks, particularly amused at Abstinence, before the expression is replaced with something more genuine. Ancient Runes is admittedly a topic he probably would take himself - if he wasn't taking Politics, he would have chosen an ancient languages or history course - and hearing that Divya shares that interest makes his eyes light up a little. "I see. That's- huh. What other classes do you take?" There's a voice in the back of his head telling him that this is too much, he's finding out too much, he's getting too involved. It pipes up every time he dares to glance at a textbook or the shop windows of Diagon, whenever that boundary is breached, but right now, he feels oddly safe.

Okay, maybe he was being a bit too ambitious; with every subject she reels off, the pit in Elijah's stomach deepens. It feels like he's encroaching on territory that's laden with landmines, like one wrong step and one intrigue peaked and that's it, he's in too close. His face returns to something more neutral and steely as they walk, as he tries his best not to wonder what transfiguration consists of (the hunters have always warned of shapeshifters and werewolves and other animal forms, and he'd not taken them too seriously, but now?) or just how much studying divination allows them to see. Can people see the future? Are psychics actually real? Are tarot cards more than just an aesthetic image for a Tumblr witch's blog? "I see," he says again, a lot less enthusiasm in it this time around. Potions? So like- poisons? His siblings could have enacted revenge on his father ages ago and escaped undetected - normal police surely wouldn't be able to identify a magical potion - or, heaven forbid, on him. If he was in their shoes, he'd have spiked some morning coffees a long time ago. The thought threatens to turn him green, and Elijah clears his throat and pointedly keeps his gaze forwards. "Sounds fascinating."

Of course she doesn't let him off the hook with the sudden change in atmosphere; he hadn't expected her to, just hoped that maybe she'd change subjects, but then they reach the end of the street and, stood directly beneath the yellow glow of a working streetlamp, he turns to face her, hands still burrowed firmly into his pockets. He's clasping the earring firmly without even realising it, turning the jewellery over and over between his fingers as if it will cast a protective bubble or something, but he's pretty sure Divya could break through that. Not even because she's a witch, but because she's just- Divya. She's that type of person, she can bring defences down. "I do," he says, letting out a small sigh and attempting to maintain at least a faint air of disinterest; it probably comes off more as irritation, but he doesn't intend it to. "I'm just not very used to it. It's a lot of information at once, and- I don't know. It's a whole other world." Even if it's not all the reasons, it's certainly one of the biggest.

"You've also attended a magical school since you were a child," he points out, not harshly but the difference between their situations is vast and that's not even counting the aspects she doesn't know about; if he were to tell her everything, she'd likely understand and hopefully wouldn't judge, but that's merely a fantasy. Still, Elijah can tell he's upset her. Usually he wouldn't care, and they'd continue what little is left of the walk in awkward silence and probaby not talk again for a while, but- he doesn't want that. He has two mutual links to the magical world - Az and Divya. The former wants nothing to do with him, and rightfully so (and Elijah isn't exactly enthusiastic about his little brother either), and Divya is- weirdly nice to somebody who has not been nice to her, but she also doesn't take his shit, which he appreciates. "Look, I'm- I'm sorry. I don't mean to be callous, especially not to you. It's just a strange situation." He isn't very good at apologies - blame a lack of experience - but for once in his life, this one is genuine.

If there is one thing that differs rather vastly between himself and Divya, it's patience; namely, something he is running out of very quickly. She's correct in that he knows little about her situation, and if her reaction is anything to go by, it is becoming more and more apparent that she's harbouring some unpleasant history too, but the lecture in the middle of the street - after he apologised, mind you - grates on him slightly. "And I was merely stating a fact. Regardless of what you have gone through, which I haven't assumed once in all the time I've known you, we were discussing your familiarity with magic. Which is undeniably greater than mine, seeing as you study it." He pauses for a moment, letting his temper simmer down a little before continuing; he's not angry, not at all, but his magic has only gotten more volatile of late and even the littest frustrations like this have physical consequences sometimes. The middle of the street is the last place he could want that to happen. "I'm not minimizing anything. I don't know what you've been through, there is nothing for me to minimize. And I'd appreciate it if you didn't pity whatever you think my situation is." The concerned glances she keeps throwing his way are probably based in pity, anyway. What else would they be?

It takes Elijah a couple of seconds to properly digest what's just been said. For anybody else, hearing that other people indeed care about them and their wellbeing would not be a controversial issue - and it shouldn't be, not really, but for Elijah it is. The obviously knocks him for six a little, too. Sure, he's not the brightest ray of sunshine in the world and he's never pretended to be, but most people he's known have simply brushed it aside as him being just unsociable or uninterested and not bothered any further. It's his own fault, and it would be false (and incredibly cliché) to say that his unfriendly exterior is a facade put up purposefully to ward others off, that he's harbouring some delightful individual underneath. He's not. Hence why people never really get close enough to be compassionate. To be honest, he's made more close acquaintances (it feels odd to call Divya or Arden friends right now, as much as he'd like to consider them as such) in the past few months than the previous seventeen years of his life. And an alarming majority of them seem to be magic. Which can't be a good sign. "I know," he eventually sighs, feeling another strange stab of guilt at Divya's reaction, before reaching out to gently hook a finger beneath her chin and tilt it back upwards to look at him. He doesn't want this to be an argument either, for both of their sakes. "But yes, for the meantime. I'd prefer if you ignored it. It isn't relevant and I don't want it to come between us."

He's always thought and worked in absolutes, refused to acknowledge that shades of grey exist, so his immediate assumption (so much for not assuming, huh) when she breaks away from him like that is not a good one. Which is fine, he supposes - actually, it's for the best, right? It'll stop him becoming more and more tempted to uncover the magic world and it'll prevent Divya from being dragged any further into his own mess. Though chance would be a fine thing. "Tell me to fuck off if you want to, but- why are you staying here?" he asks, brow furrowed once he recognises just which building she's heading to. It isn't even a magical hostel, boarded up and disguised like the one Az resides in, just plain and out in the open. "I understanding staying with Mia might not be the most desirable option, but- I don't know. You seem like the type who would have friends who would let you stay with them. Especially ones from your school."
